Buckeye Limited: 1.5" Scale H10's Tow Union Pacific Challenger

In this Buckeye Limited "At a Glance" installment, we find two H10's towing a mighty Union Pacific Challenger into Barney Yard at the Mill Creek Central Railroad. After the assist, the locomotives were shunted back to their trains and sent back out for duty on the railroad while other locomotives operated in the yard. This is one of the many reasons why I love the live steam stuff so much. You get the most outlandish combinations of railways and classes that would never happen on the actual lines.

At 6:30 when those NYC locomotives took off with those exhaust pipes blowing smoke reminds me of the real thing. Man I wish I could win the lottery and set up a huge backyard railroad like this.

The h-10’s are incredible locomotives, and they get better with each one built. Major workhorse and extremely rugged. Would love to have one one day

Wow, that H-10 sounded amazing! The only thing that I don’t like with live steam is that you don’t get the beautiful stack talk of full sized steam locos but that H-10 under load was exactly what I wanted.

At 1:45, the man speaks to 'Bruce', I went to school with his brother. Bruce was just a little kid when they lived on our street in Newark in the 50s. Im impressed at his accomplishments and his engine. And We thot we had quite a RR running S gauge in Dick's backyard. LOL. Ahhh the old days. PS I never saw any foot pegs on the steamers I worked on at the B&O ?????

With the right money, *full sized* versions of most extinct steam locomotives could be brought back to life from the ground up if they can do it with these little miniatures. Especially with modern 3-D molding techniques for castings, etc.

I love steam trains,I've ridden on some around the west u.s.,not little one,they are rare,and I fixed income. It looks like a lot of people are in to this. Does any of engineers on little train,drive the big regular steam trains. Where is this located. Real cool

They are well over 700 pounds empty. The challenger is probably well over 1400 pounds empty.

The work involved in making a steam loco must be immense. In all the videos they are being driven by an "engineer" sitting on the tender. Has anyone built a loco that is remote controlled?

Wow.... Is there some kind of blueprint to build them or do you just take original drawings and scale it down? And one must have exceptional craftmanship skills to make the rigs you guys are riding on :)

Yes, there is definitely a lot of skill needed- and stick to it. You can buy raw castings and drawings for a select few engine types from Little Engines. Some do scale down drawings- but guys that build to scale in this hobby generally have nice looking engines that don’t run well. You have to overbuild them and build them for functionality.

@@JungleYT build the parts sturdier and larger than normal. For example, it's not uncommon for "scale" locomotives to have oversized rods and bearings as well as different designs of boilers and cylinders from simply scaled down versions of their prototypes. You need to do this to get engines that run well because following good steam locomotive design practice is not necessarily just scaling down the prototype but also understanding what you can do within those basic dimensions to give you a good running locomotive that will follow food design practice but give you a reasonable representation-model of your prototype.

It depends on the engine you’re talking about....weight would vary greatly. A 4-8-4 northern locomotive can be up to 2,400 pounds + the tender. A ten wheeler might only be 400-500.

There are vendors that sell the rail but you’re looking at about $1.35 per foot + shipping. Between the rail, hardware, wood for the ties, and the ballast- you can estimate about $10 a finished foot with your own labor.

scott jenkins $10,000 for the smallest engine. The H10’s you see pulling the challenger were base priced at $25,000. The owner of the challenger was rumored to have paid $350,000

@@stwright1977 I've done some research, and 1.5" scale means 1/8th scale, not 1/5th as you claimed. obviously 1.5" scale etc is confusing nomenclature. 1.5" sacle means 1 foot is scale down to 1.5". since 1 foot is 12 inches. 1.5/12 = 1/8.

A couple questions as someone that knows nothing but is fascinated by these. 1.) How much are these? 2.) Who makes these and where do you buy them? 3.) How much HP are they? 4.) how much weight can they pull?

Very expensive. $10,000 plus for a switcher- $15,000-$20,000 for a road diesel. Steam-you don’t. You build them. Unless you can cut a check well in excess of $40,000-50,000...running into the $100,000’s for larger engines. This is not a hobby for check writers...this is a hobby for tradesmen. If you don’t develop fabrication skills this equipment won’t stay in service long-especially Steam. Your other two questions vary by engine so they are hard to answer.
