With the Settle & Carlisle line now fully reopened after the major landslip at Eden Brows I decided to put together footage taken over the last seven years covering the climb from Hellifield to Aisgill summit with a steady 1 in 100 climb . A tough climb that would severely test the crew and loco .Seen in the video are 45690 Leander , 46115 Scots Guardsman , 46233 Duchess of Sutherland , 60009 Union of South Africa , The Great Marques, 61994, 8F48151,45699 Galatea,44932, 45497 The Lancashire Fusilier and 44871 . Thanks to my friend Phil for allowing me to use two shots of his at Hellifield and Settle Junction.Apologies for two clips with mono sound as I forgot to duplicate the sound in the editing plus the sound on 61994 could have been better .

Ais Gill Summit - amazing that the Philistines have not had their hands on that board and changed it to metres above sea level. Maybe they have by now. And who nowadays would trust a humble Black 5 to take 12 coaches unassisted on that route? But there it is..Some wonderful classic locations and filming from what I still see as a bygone era. Thank you for putting it all together for our enjoyment. It is much appreciated.

You made me feel nostalgic of the old days when the powerful steam locos of the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway here in Argentina, used to speed through my home town of Junin, off in a cloud of smoke and steam to link up with the Transandean Railway and up across the Andes to Chile. Not to mention that my Father was top assistant to the Chief Mechanical Engineer, and so I learned a lot about railways. Nowadays , down here, all those tracks and shopa and materiel, a pitiful shambles. Your video: A lovely, professional set of films: And fascinating scenery. Thanks a lot !

Anyone who thought this compilation wasn't first class would be deluding themselves. Love the shots ending at about 9:20. Plus no diesel assistance, and few road vehicles visible so remoteness is possible in a small island with c.67 million inhabitants.

I made this trip, Settle to Carlisle, with Leander. Later that year I visited the rail stations by car, (including a trip to the Ribblehead viaduct) and catch two trains in the way! and now you gave me the opportunity to see the landscapes...Thank you. Great stuff,. Funny to see those sheep legging it away double sharpish as these magnificent monsters come thundering by. Such familiar sights when I was a lad. Good to know some still exist. Seven years work eh. Time well spent. Thank you. The two Jubilees Leander and Galatea were almost a daily sight when I lived in Gloucester. They were based at Bristol 22A Shed code in the 1950s and hauled passenger trains northbound up the Midland line through Gloucestershire northbound. Ten years on a move to London and this rail enthusiast saw the likes of 70013, 60009 and most of the rest in action until the mid-60s. Ten years further on, I worked in S.Wakes and travelled much for my job. Homeward bound to Gloucester on the A40 I took a break in a long lay by. Also in that lay by was a low loader. On that was a Jubilee headed from Barry Woodham's place to Severn Valley. Yes, one of those former Bristol based Jubs.

As, always, fab Steve. I love the shot of the ‘angriest loco’ in the world (Oliver Cromwell) in the snow. Also some top footage of Scots Guardsman demonstrating the power of these fine locos, especially in the clip with 13 bogies on the hook. I was up in the Yorkshire Dales yesterday walking Whernside. Sadly, as you’ll be aware, no steam to be had (and precious little traffic on the line of any description). BTW, quite an LMS bias in this one - well done, that’s just the way I like it 😉 (to be fair though, No.9 is shown giving a couple of splendid performances here).

Here in the US, diesel is often used a generator to supply electricity to the passenger cars, but not for hauling power at all. Also required by right of way owners to keep tracks clear in case of steam engine failure.

Hellifield to Settle junction is downhill. From there to Hellwith Bridge is a steady 1 in 100 then there's a short level stretch to just south of Horton in Ribblesdale then 1 in 100 again to Dent. From Dent to Aisgill summit is fairly level (which is just as well as this stretch included the Garsdale Head water troughs)

TheStephengthompson Excellent stuff for which many thanks. The very first one would be the best for focus and the rest were it not for the too many vacant looking heads and expressions from aged looking males with their heads out of the toilet windows at end of each carriage AND that hideous diesel loco at the rear prompting the reflection “whither steamif its performance has to be guaranteed by a foul smelling diesel! Thankfully this was not the case in the rest of the superb docs!

Could you tell me: Is there a regular steam train that does this route? If you filmed it over the last 7 years does that mean it's a regular feature of this line? Thanks.

Months ago I saw a comment from someone regarding a particular driver's{sadly, passed} ability to adjust something like acctuator,regulator?? that gave the engine a "fluttering sound". Something that he was well known for. Could someone please tell me what it was that he adjusted,and,which train it was? I thought it was the Black fives,but still searching for the vid clip. Someone help me please.? It's driving me nuts!

It will be the regulator Allison and all locos have one that basically the higher up it’s lifted the faster the locomotive moves . Not sure which loco or driver you mean though sorry.

Thank you sooo much Stephen. Persistence will pay off. I know that I downloaded it to my computer along with a multitude of video clips of steam trains,so I will conduct a thorough search,and,will sure let you know the train,and,the driver's name. Thanks again,Awrabest,Allison

@@TheStephengthompson This is most of what was on the tracks when I was a kid. My family on both sides were all railroad. My Paternal grandfather was a salesman for one of the big builders, he actually sold a whole set up to India, even went over and helped survey the route, rode on the freighters when the rolling stock was shipped and got them running. My mothers side was not so lucky, a second cousin lost a leg in an accident, her mother had three train car accidents over her life, the last one got her on mothers day 1974 at a crossing on a hill.

Great video with a wonderful variety of locos although my blood pressure rises when I see the idiots on the trackside at 6:02. The problems trespassers caused with Flying Scotsman were widely reported and there was a woman killed in America when she got too close to Union Pacific 844. That sort of stupidity does nothing to promote the cause of mainline steam.

well the long drag tests firemen and from what I SEEN there still learning how to fire some are throwing too much coal on and not setting their dampers right and firebox door to get the right amount of air in the firebox you only need six good shovels every two to three minutes

I love how to LMS engines have to work hard yet the LNER engines just go "Hill, what hill, I thought it was an ant mound?"
@BoilerRoom4
@BoilerRoom4 5 жыл бұрын
1 in 100 is an ant mound. You know you have a "hill" when coming down is the scary bit. Back in the day, the NSW "standard goods" steamers (2-8-0) used to run out of brakes (and sometimes throw their rods) bringing goods trains down the 20 miles of 1 in 33 between Katoomba and Valley Heights. With all the handbrakes wound on at Katoomba, the wagon tyres were quickly glowing red hot and making catherine-wheel sparks. Reportedly, it looked very pretty in the middle of the night. After Valley Heights, the grade settles down to 1 in 60. There was a brake plan that drivers tried to keep to. At a particular landmark, apply full brake and slow the train to a walking pace. Release the brake and let the train run. By the next landmark, the compressor would hopefully have charged the air back up, and you apply full brake again. The next generation of goods steamers (4-8-2), the 57 and 58 class, did not suffer from this. Then the electric 46 class locomotives just whizzed up and down the grade as if it didn't exist. The grade from a standing start out of Faulconbridge station is 1 in 31.

Agin, beautiful videos of beautiful trains in beautiful settings; the English countryside is so lovely. I especially enjoyed the shot at 26:00; the light is perfect and again at 30:00 I believe it was.....the all scarlet livery. I believe the fireman sometimes throws some sand in the firebox which scours out the accumulated soot, which makes for some black smoke, at least that was the practice here in the States. also, I'm not clear on the meaning of the lights on the locomotive; do they refer to routing or destination? Thanks for posting, always a pleasure to watch.

So people are willing to pay for a steam train ride where the 100+ tons of diesel loco on the rear (see 4:50 & 16:40 etc) does at least some of the work ! I don't believe in being conned !!!
