Huge Storm Camping In Cheap Hammock

$30 hammock, $20 tarp. Cheap gear camping with a big storm blowing through. It was a blast! I stayed fairly warm as long as I didn't go to far from the sleeping bag. It actually snowed through the night.
Today's meal was Hamburger Soup with some winter ale and fresh tray buns. It was a night of camping to remember!

Steve just camps in a random place, for one night, in a random shelter. Then he has a drink, cooks and eats some food, and sleeps. No real action. Yet I can't stop watching.

I was in the same boat. But now I've gone camping a couple of times so far this year. Sometimes I just take my sleeping bag out and lay my sleep pad on a blue tarp and sleep outside. I'll lay on one half and cover up with the other half so the morning dew doesn't get me.
@ryancosta839

A reflective space blanket on top of your sleeping bag really helps. When I was traveling on foot cross country I used a heavy plastic bag from a new refrigerator as a bivy shelter/tent. Hi Steve, I notice this video is a couple years old. I've been watching you for about a year now, and I know you've learned a lot. I just want to mention something I've learned in camping across the country. When you build your fire, find and place two flat-top rocks beside the fire, spaced apart by about 2/3 the width of your pan, with the spaced area in a channel facing the fire. Once you get some coals, scoop some of them between the rocks. Now you can place your pan on the rocks and cook. At the same time you can put more wood on your original fire without disturbing your cooking, which gives you more light and heat. The coals will cook your food without covering your pans with soot, so you'll have easier cleanup. If you can't find rocks, a couple wet semi-rotten logs will work as well. Your meal will be long cooked before they catch fire.

I'm also curious. I noticed that, since most sleeping bags can be opened from the bottom and top, you could feed the hammock through it so it wasn't crushed under you inside the hammock, theoretically keeping you warmer. That is, if it's cold enough to bother. Oh, and more importantly, probably not cooking where you sleep lol

@Dodge Yes I agree, I think it's just nice to see an experienced backpacker/bushcrafter on KZfaq who hasn't gotten too big for their britches. As someone who has been in the outdoor world for many years in backpacking, whitewater kayaking, tele skiing, etc., I've grown tired of watching outdoor films that feel like a 2 hour self-congratulatory highlight reel. Inspirational folk music, egregious use of slow motion and all that. Sometimes you just want to watch a video that transports you out to the woods for a bit and Steve's videos are perfect for that.

The one thing I love about Steve is how he gets by in the simplest way possible, there is something so appealing about it. He does not use all the fancy expensive equipment, he does not have amazing bushcraft skills, and the food he cooks is simple. @ant-1382
@ant-1382 3 жыл бұрын
It's weird. Canadian Tire sells a lot of the same stuff as the other big box store's. I think the difference is, the others focus on high profile, seasonal products. Canadian Tire always seems to have other stuff too! What ever you need - hardware, paint, sporting goods, appliances, housewares, woodstoves, A/C, and of course a complete auto center; with tires. Not to mention tarps in all sizes - to cover a bucket, or to cover your house.

Mom was an American Indian born on a reservation in Arizona and she knew a lot of survival skills. She had a rough but, full life. Homelessness is rough. The people you trust, often are your worst enemies. Stealth camping survival is nothing New to me. Hiding from cops and bad people are the Norm. So, in a way, Steves paranoia is understandable.
