THE HORSE STANCE an excellent exercise for developing strength, endurance, the mind and more but...why did I stop training it? In this video, I will answer this question as well as answer some common questions such as, "I can't get deep enough, what can I do?", "Why don't you point your feet forward?" and "why not anterior pelvic tilt?".

maybe not the holy grail but certainly a very deep and rich gold mine, I can't see how one could get enough of it. add whatever you want, vary it in any possible way, but never get rid of its basic extreme static form...

We could say the same about many practices and exercises across multitudes of disciplines. It starts to hint that it is not so much in what we do but how we do it.

@@TheTaoWay I can agree if you mean that anything It's inside anything if can look It right for It, but still I can't imagine of a stronger and more reliable ally for any research than the horse stance. Horse stance may self teach you gradually from zero to the extreme of Power and balance even without knowing at First what tò look for. It Is such an unmatchable self guided Path for human improvement that It should be mandatory for every human being.

This Video couldn't have been uploaded at a better time. I literally did the horse stance hold today for the first time and watched your Videos for preparation short before my first practise. A few hours later this Video just popped up like nothing on exactly the same topic. It seems like a big coincidence but i think its like the Buddhist teachings says: "there is no coincidence". I believe its a sign from something much bigger than us humans that want to tell me that i am on the right path. I used the Ma Bu stance before in a dynamic way for middle split work or in my ba duan jin practise but never hold it for a long duration until today. Thank you very much for this and your other teachings sharing this valuable content and wisdom online for free. Enjoy your stay in the shaolin temple. I would like to see you making a Video about the shaolin teachings. I watched a lot of Videos about this topic, mostly from shi heng yi which is a shaolin Master himself. I also would like to hear your perspective on this 1500 year old Tradition 🙏🏻

I've found the Horse Stance to be a great exercise to work mobility around my hip injury. That being said, I see how it is important to move beyond it, just like moving beyond Handstands. Moving on from an exercise at one point is part of the practice.

I also used it as a rehab tool for an old injury around the lower body. Some practices are shinier than others and it may be difficult to move on at times, just talking from experience. The handstand being a particularly shiny one for me.

Great video update, I have been doing the Horse Stance every morning for 10 mins for now 20+ days. I can't yet do it all at once, so I do it in long mins chunks. The goal is to be able to do it in 5 minutes and then 10mins chunks and go further. There are already a ton of benefits gained, but my overall aim with this exercise is on the mental side of things, although from a fitness perspective, it's a fantastic exercise that I have started to recommend to a lot to people. One can search more about extreme isometrics and how good these exercises are for tendon health, neural drive, lactic acid threshold, cardio, mobility etc. But if the goal is mental dev, then horse stance will be a staple in my daily routine for years to come. Once I can hold the position for 10 mins I will make a video and link it here.

My long fist and Chen style taiji teacher said horse stance was for children. He would teach it to adults but wasn't in favor of holding for long. The older the person, the less he would emphasize it. He gave 2 reasons: 1. footwork should take priority over stances because in fighting, positioning is everything, 2. the older you are, the more you need TO MOVE! If someone had 10:00 to train, the last thing he wanted them doing was horse stance when they could do a 1:00 long form ten times.

Well done. The strength has developed when one gets to the point that he/she wants to hold the stance more. You bring up good points about how every body structure may approach a specific exercise differently. We all don't look like identical twins 😂. ❤ I'm not recieving all of your notifications. Thankfully I know when you upload your videos. Happy Spring 🌷

3:38 i've been doing a stretching/quasi-yoga routine for a while now, with the goals of getting rid of my anterior pelvic tilt (it occurs while standing) and achieving the front and side splits. my understanding is that an anterior pelvic tilt occurs due to some biomechanical misalignment, muscle weakness, and/or lack of flexibility in some area. when i practice a bodyweight squat, sometimes i do a slight spinal wave while i'm at the bottom of my squat range, so that my chest is slightly out while my pelvis simultaneously goes from neutral to posterior - so my chest and pelvis are basically opposing each other, going in opposite directions - i feel that helps with lengthening my spine and making it more elastic. i'm not formally schooled in any movement practice but this is just an observation from my own explorations on a yoga mat

It is important to say that I am talking about the ability to choose posterior or anterior pelvic tilt and not being forced to do one or the other due to a weakness/imbalance in the body. You are talking about the condition of anterior pelvic tilt where I am talking about this ability to choose. There are certain exercises that you would want a very prominent anterior pelvic tilt and others where you want a very strong posterior pelvic tilt and different intensities in between. It also depends upon your own body and the qualities you are looking to develop.

Usually martial art practitioners use a posterior pelvic tilt for smoother qi circulation and to store qi in the dantian.

Try single leg balance with heels off the floor slightly. It’s better than the horse stance

why not add weight onto the horse stance after you've mastered doing it with just bodyweight? I feel like that would continue to make your legs stronger without diminishing returns.
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay 3 ай бұрын
I never said you couldn't add weight to it. I have done this in the past as well but there will certainly still be a point with diminishing returns. It does not change this fact. Also, I would explore what the word 'mastered' truly means.

Adding weight to this is something you can do and something that I did in the past as well but the point of this video is not about increasing intensity. An inability to progress or increase load was not why I stopped.

Okay, but if you were doing kung fu for combat readiness, and thought there is a risk you might get attacked tomorrow and have to fight someone, and could die, I presume you would continue doing horse stance to some extent. It is the relative safety of modern life that let you give up I would assume? Burn out is something all sports training experiences. Maybe if you toned down the frequency to something you could be happy with you might have continued? It's a bit like a free, no equipment leg press, that also develops ligaments and relaxes the leg meat, and also as you say, forces you to develop meditative qualities
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay 2 ай бұрын
The horse stance is a great exercise but it is important we don't give it too much credit where it is not due. If you want to get better at fighting then you must fight. Holding the horse stance will not help you here. If you're main concern is being attacked then I would pursue a martial art with regular real sparring such as Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, etc.
@maximisatwat
@maximisatwat 2 ай бұрын
@@TheTaoWay horse stance is like an ancient no-equipment leg-press. Your legs will build up very strong muscle for kicks, as well as acting as a stable base for hand strikes, as well as the meditative aspect you mentioned. You will not find a simpler way to build very strong legs with little risk of injury because there's no impact.
@TheTaoWay

My objection is not to the physical and mental benefits. I have a number of videos talking about these. My objection is to its connection to fighting. Having a good horse stance does not mean you can fight or defend yourself. If you want to be able to fight, you must spar and you must spar often.
