With the stroke of a pen, tens of thousands of Federation citizens found their colonies on the wrong side of a border. Rather than submit to the brutality of the Cardassian Union, these people would fight for their freedom under the banner of the Maquis.
The Templin Institute investigates the nations, factions, and organizations of alternate worlds.

"On Earth there is no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window at Starfleet Headquarters and you see paradise. Well, it's easy to be a saint in paradise. But the Maquis do not live in paradise. Out there, in the Demilitarized Zone, all problems have not been solved yet. There are no saints, just people; angry, scared, determined people who are going to do whatever it takes to survive, whether it meets with the Federation approval or not." - Commander Benjamin Sisko

The Maquis were a fantastic concept, if a poorly executed one at times (yes, Voyager, I’m looking at you). There’s no denying that their cause was just, or that the Federation government utterly failed them. The entire plot of Insurrection is based around “it’s wrong to move a few hundred people from their homes against their will”, yet the Federation-Cardassian treaty does exactly that. TNG and DS9 don’t sugarcoat it either. The Federation were the villains, plain and simple. They made a giant, awful mistake and the Maquis were a direct consequence of that mistake. It’s easy enough to see the Federation as reeling in 2370, traumatised and terrified of the Borg threat and the loss of their complacency, so they do whatever they must to ensure peace with Cardassia. The Federation Council and Diplomatic Corps see the new threats, from the return of the Romulans to the emergence of the Borg, so they abandon their own principles and common sense to ensure peace...at any cost. It really is a fascinating contrast to the Federation of 2373. By then, the Federation had become battle-hardened. Starfleet had begun to militarise, building up its fleets for war, matching the Klingon Empire in open warfare and defeating a second Borg invasion. When the time came, they recognised the growing threat of the Dominion and made the first move, mining the entrance to the wormhole and ensuring that the inevitable war started on their terms. The Federation government of 2373, its bright-eyed naiviete and innocence lost, would never have signed those original treaties with Cardassia. They would’ve found another solution, and the Maquis would never have been born. As it stood, the Maquis were ultimately victims of their own government’s fear. It doesn’t make their actions right, nor does it justify slaughtering all those Cardassians with biogenic weapons. It does, however, put the Maquis into the proper context.

I disagree, there's a major difference here. The colonists were Federation citizens and were given the option to move with assistance from the Federation to somewhere that wasn't located in disputed territory. Plus, it's part of the risks of colonization. Sometimes you end up setting up shop somewhere that either turns out to be in someone else's territory or it's in such a location that you can't get support for it. Colonies fail, it's not always fair but it happens. Especially when you settling in a territory that then has brushfire wars for 27 years. They knew the risks and got snake eyes.

I agree with you both actually, both were wrong at some time, but neither one was justified, both were placing land or territories above people's lives, and everytime that happens, shit stuff ensues, I never understood why people do that in real life, but was well used in this story arc
@redshirt0479

That sounds about right, although I think for the Federation it was more putting the needs of society before the needs of the individual and an examination of how something that's perfectly logical, reasonable, and probably even the right call on the large scale can have disastrous effects on the small scale. I mean, ending a war through treaties and negotiations is often the right move to prevent deaths. Especially when there are other conflicts going on at the time (such as the Tzenkethi war and the Galen Border Conflicts) and one that might be coming on the horizon (threat of the Borg which had attacked only a year earlier).
@Mahbu

I'd like to point out that the Federation was not winning the war against the Cardassians. They may not have been losing but they weren't winning, at least according to some sources I've seen. The Federation was suffering significant casualties and loss of material due to their lack of actual military prowess and no dedicated warships. The Federation, which had dedicated itself to peace and exploration, was no longer equipped or prepared to fight against a militarized society and was forced to accept an unfavorable treaty to end hostilities which it could ill-afford to continue. The Federation was not the villain. It went to war initially to defend its colonists and colonies but did not have the sufficient capacity to wage that war.
@redshirt0479
@redshirt0479 6 жыл бұрын
Except none of that is in the canon. Here's all we know beyond a shadow of a doubt: There was a conflict between the Federation and the Cardassian Union The conflict lasted from the 2340s to 2367 when a ceasefire was reached that eventually became treaties. There was a massacre on Setlik III that claimed an unknown number of people O'Brien was involved in the war and was assigned to the USS _Rutledge_ Picard saw action during the war while in command of the USS _Stargazer_ and outran Cardassian warships on an occasion where he was outnumbered. Janeway saw action as a lieutenant during the war There is nothing to indicate any other detail about the war. In fact, if we look at how the war affected both parties it appears that the Cardassians were having the rougher time of it given that for the first four years of TNG you wouldn't be able to tell that there were multiple wars going on at the time. Which points to the conflict being brushfire wars for the Federation. Plus, we saw the _Enterprise_ D during _The Chase_ take multiple hits from the forward phaser of multiple _Galor_ class starships (i.e. their mainline cruiser) and take no damage without shields raised simply by routing more power to the structural integrity field. That's a large power gap between a _Galaxy_ and a _Galor_ of that era (1) and that's not even taking into account how the Klingons, whom the Federation are roughly equal in combat strength to, were able to so utterly destroy the Cardassians in a year that they could no longer survive as an independent power. Which again, points to low intensity conflicts caused by the more aggressive Cardassians poking the proverbial bear and the Federation, instead of smashing them to bits, decided to just hash out a treaty instead of wasting lives on a pointless conflict. And since when has Starfleet not having dedicated warships ever hampered them? Literally every ship except the _Defiant_ and the _Prometheus_ is a multirole vessel with a suite of scientific equipment on board. (1) I say of that era because the Cardassians got a massive technological bump from joining the Dominion among other sources and were able to field more effective variants of their warships.

*Michael Eddington :* I know you. I was like you once, but then I opened my eyes. Open your eyes, Captain. Why is the Federation so obsessed about the Maquis? We've never harmed you. And yet we're constantly arrested and charged with terrorism. *Benjamin Sisko :* You know what, Mr. Eddington... I don't give a damn what you think of the Federation, or the Maquis, or anything else. All I know is that you betrayed your oath, your duty and me. And if it takes me the rest of my life, I'll see you standing before a court-martial that'll break you and send you to a penal colony where you'll spend the rest of your days growing old and wondering whether a ship full of replicators was really worth it.
@redshirt0479

I love that Eddington delivers that line literally right after committing an act of terrorism and ignores the number of times that Maquis ships have fired on Starfleet ships even that early in the series. It was a great way of hinting at his hero complex/delusion early in the arc that would later become his undoing.

Great work! Although I wouldn’t say that the Maquis were abandoned by their government. They did, in the end, choose to stay even though the Federation offered to assist in the relocation and set up of a new colony in territory that wasn’t disputed. Plus, they had to know the risks when they were settling in the area or just colonizing in general. You always run the risk that you’re setting up in someone else’s space; just look at Cestus III. Also really glad you didn’t glance over acts such as the Maquis development and deployment of Biogenic Weapons since that’s basically the equivalent of a modern day insurgent group building and dropping a nuke or bioweapon. So many fans seem to ignore that and have this strange, romantic view of the Maquis. Oh and this is probably just me that likes this, but I am so happy that you called the Cardassain-Federation war what it actually is, a series of low intensity conflicts. For some reason, not a lot of people seem to understand that a 'war' can be something other than massive fleets and armies duking it out and that such wars aren't always decided by who has the most powerful equipment or even the best tactics. Then again, there are those that think that seeking out a peaceful solution or treaty is a sign of weakness or that you're on the losing side rather than just not wanting to fight or not considering it worth the effort.
@joemomma2189
@joemomma2189 11 ай бұрын
Given the nature of the people that settled, they were people that had been 'moved' for political reasons before in history (I.e. Native Americans) , and after the third or fourth time that has happened, you cannot fault them for not wanting to be moved again. It isn't so much about being right or wrong, moreso- where do you draw the line? Take the NCR in Fallout New Vegas, who were slowly moving in and pushing 'squatters' off their territory, nevermind those people have been living there for years before the NCR arrived. Was the reasons for both good? Yes, for the Federation they were just coming out of back-to-back conflicts so the idea of fighting over a 'few colonies' when they had MASSIVE infrastructure damage and manpower shortages was just not plausible, even with the technological level they had. For the NCR, they had a food and water shortage going on and had to not only support people back home, but provide for the people of New Vegas under their protection. There was no good answer to any of this.

Sadly in the year 2373, most of the Maquis would eventually get wiped out by the Cardassians when the Cardassians formed an alliance with the Dominion, a political power from the Gamma Quadrant and with the help of the Jem'Hadar sodiers, killed most of them, but a few survivors, some in Federation prisons, Cardassian prisons, and some who are crew members of the U.S.S. With the destruction of the Obsidian Order and the Overthrow of the Military Government the Maquis had a chance to negotiate with the Cardasians and establish their independence. I always hated how the Maquis ended up. They fought so hard for their freedom and in the end they just got massacred like it was nothing, it felt like their whole story-arc in both TNG and DS9 was for nothing. And then in Voyager all the Masquis crew just agreed to act like starfleet personal with almost no problems, it was such a let down.
@sergeantassassin3425
@sergeantassassin3425 4 жыл бұрын
That tends to happen when one of the big boys decides to get up and bitch-slap a burgeoning power so hard they cease to exist. Their story arc wasn't meaningless: it was a very poignant reminder that the underdog DOESN'T always win. There's a reason they're the underdog: the likelihood they're going to win is very, very slim. The Maquis only got as far as they did because Cardassia was transitioning from a competitive power in the Alpha Quadrant to a secondary power, unable to replace their losses and beleaguered on multiple sides from within and without. If it had been the Klingons, the Romulans or the Federation? Easily crushed. As for the Voyager Maquis, did they have much of a choice? Their single Maquis Raider couldn't support all of the Maquis people that had been taken by the Caretaker Array, and Voyager itself was the only friendly-ish ship for lightyears in every direction. They had two 'choices': stay on Voyager and abide by Federation/Starfleet rules and policies, or leave and effectively remain stranded in the Delta Quadrant forever. When your ONLY ticket home happens to be someone you're not on the best terms with, you swallow your differences and do what needs to be done to get home. It wasn't 'a let down', it was the smartest choice they could have made.

@sergeantassassin3425

@@Fenris77 Right. As I'd said, the Cardassians were already in the process of going from a primary to a secondary power in the galaxy. Their technology was stagnating to such a degree that the other three neighboring powers could field their non-top-tier starships against the best the Cardassians had to offer and usually come away with only minor casualties. A Nebula-class from the Federation could take on multiple Cardassian battle cruisers without suffering much, if any, damage, and that was WITH the Enterprise giving out information to purposefully aid the Cardassians (TNG: The Wounded). Internally, they were being torn apart from constant strife, with the Obsidian Order being a watered-down, inferior version of the Tal Shiar, yet causing almost as much damage to their own people/government as their enemies. Things like trust, loyalty, devotion, etc? Scarce in the Cardassian Union. All of this combined to severely hamper, hinder, and ultimately weaken the Cardassians to a point where they couldn't sustain the territories they'd once contested, including the Federation/Cardassian border. The Dominion just took advantage of a weakening power, gave them steroids, then cut them down when they proved useless.

Military “Junkta”?
@superdupergrover9857
@superdupergrover9857 6 жыл бұрын
a quick search online revealed it is supposed to be ' *junta* ' not 'junkta' junta is a more concise word for dictatorship, especially a military one.

superdupergrover I know, it’s what I heard. And it’s pronounced “Hunta”, as far as I know, because of its Spanish origins.
@thschnick
@thschnick 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's officially pronounced hunta but (j)unta is what it is often pronounced in countries that don't pronounce "j"s as "h"s like in south america were everyone speaks spanish.

Schnick A lot of people pronounce it “Hunta” here in America, too. However, I live in a place with a lot of Latino immigrants so my view may be skewed.

Also junta literally means "union" in Spanish, making it all the more fitting for the Cardassian Union.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Was a Really Awesome Series. It really shattered the Federations Peaceful point of view and not only that it made The Federation create Military Warships like the Defiant completely making the Federation break their Only Scientific and Exploration Star Ship Doctrine No Warship Path Imagine. once the Dominion War Started Poof a Prototype Defiant Rolls off the Shipyard and Improvements soon after. These small Corsair size Ships Quickly Making their Galaxy Class Ships look like Cruise Liners (well they kinda are).

Hahahahahaha Maquis as the ST counterpart of Mandalorian. Except Maquis is some sort of standard rebel cell while Mandalorian is more of a semi-religious mercenary group.
