This is what happens when the script and production of a horror movie is actually taken care of and not just thrown together. An underrated gem.

That man with the pitchfork stabbing people in the school was actually the same principal who was sitting still at the empty baseball game. The hunters who were only hunting animals are now hunting humans. Rory's grieving family actually try to enact revenge and went as far as to squat around in the main character's home and wait. The poster for this movie had the words "Fear Thy Neighbor" for a reason.

This movie was filmed in Iowa near where I live. At the time it was filmed, we all thought it would be some terrible B movie with a plotline along what is stated at the beginning of the video. No one films anything seriously in flyover country, so we didn't have high hopes. We were pleasantly surprised. The fact that the apocalypse starts in a small rural town really hit home. We always think of ourselves out here as insulated from all of the crap that goes on in the cities.

One of the things I found the most interesting was how the government guy clarified that not only was this whole mess an accident, the virus was being transported to an incinerator in Texas, but just how unapologetic he is. The guy says to the sherrif 'look, we lost a plane what do you want me to say?' The way he treats this like a small chemical leak rather than the destruction of an entire community is harrowing.

David has a great line for when he decides to go back for his wife and tells a fellow town member who argues against it "Don't ask me why I can't leave without my wife and I won't ask you why you can."

As somebody who works in a city council of a large American city, the mayor’s lack of response is very relevant. The thing about crisis response is that most city problems are slow motion, long term - until they aren’t. And a lot of bureaucrats are not well equipped to deal with these situations, especially when re-election is on their mind.

The original Romero version is about how the government & scientist deal with it from their perspective and this one, the remake is about the town/citizens. Im glad the remake isn't a 1:1 remake. They're great companion pieces

Honestly, I feel like "Crazies" has the scariest zombies ever. They're not mutants like in Resident Evil, demons like in Evil Dead or rabid infected from The Rec, but just angry and heartless people with desire to kill. No scene of zombie eating somebody alive has made me nearly as nervous as guy slowly stabbing every tied up human

People sleep on Russell, loved how despite the illusion of safety he went back into hell and even when struggling with a extremely violent virus he sacrificed himself for his friends

The one thing I really love about this movie is that they don't paint any group as some one-dimensional trope. Like in any other movie every military member in the movie would just be some faceless robot that just kills everyone for no reason. This one showed that they were actually people and that they don't actually want to be doing this but thought they were preventing an outbreak, so to save more people basically. So they can be the antagonists without actually being bad, which is a fine balance that a lot of other movies, especially in this genre, do not get right.

Honestly this concept of military members having to kill people who are infected that don’t look infected to essentially save humanity is such a scary concept. It’s exactly what made the Last of Us intro scary for me.

I really like that FINALLY army is not shown as an incompetent bunch, they see the infected - they shoot them, end of story, no asking around, no teary eyes, you got one job. Also i probably gonna watch this, seems like developers ACTUALLY tried to write an interesting story.

A move where a quote left huge impression on me for whatever reason. "Don't ask me why I can't leave without my wife and I won't ask you why you can." I don't know why I remember it after all these years. It didn't change my life or anything, but it definitely left an impression.

The "boowuh" after every "crazy" is killing me 😭😭

The lead actress is Radha Mitchell. She's Australian and is one of the most underrated horror scream queens ever: "Pitch Black", "Phone Booth", "Silent Hill", "Rogue", "The Darkness" at first, you take her for the pretty, generic blonde but she brings an intensity to everything she's done.

The water supply plot point is absolutely genius in how realistic it is, and something sort of similar happened to me years ago. I used to live in a building where the water supply was pretty much contaminated due to old tanks and extremely rusty pipes from the 50s which were made with toxic materials that arent used anymore. When I moved in I had no idea about this so I would drink the water normally from the sink. One week all of a sudden people inside my building started getting extremely sick, elderly had to be taken to the hospitals, and I started puking my guts out without warning. Turns out that the terrible manteinance of the water supply made a bacteria show up that got everyone sick in the span of 48 hrs, added to the rust within the pipes becoming toxic and that in contact with water at a certain temperature would release a toxin into the air, which filtered into each flat, making even those who didnt drink the water sick on a lower level but still having diarrhea and other bad symptoms. The building was fortunately cleaned but it took a long time, and its safe to say I never drank water from the pipes again and always kept a window open in case the toxins come back. It seems so stupid, but its insanely truthful to how many building ends up quarantined.

I live in Cedar Rapids. In the theatre the people went ballistic when they mentioned our cities name like 3 times LOL

That “oh brother, this guy stinks!” will always get a good hearty laugh out of me 😂

This movie has one of the most ruthless military can think of in the zombie apocalypse. In zombie movies or shows the military is shown to either help or ignore the main characters and the communities but here they aren't taking chances with the virus being airborne, as shown with the evacuated people, Scotty and his mom, and the car the helicopter saw.

"Back in 2010" made me feel old AF

The Crazies and The Sadness are probably two of the closest things we can get to a live action adaptation of a Crossed comic. A mystery virus that turns people into downright psychopaths, they're the most terrifying kind of ''zombie'' as a concept and it's heavily under utilised in movies.

This movie has been in my top 10 horror movies since I was a kid. It’s so tense and dark. One of the only reboots that out does the original.

The Last of Us intro owes a lot of credit to this movie

My dad was an extra in The Crazies which was filmed in Georgia near where we're from. He was one of the soldiers in full MOP gear when they first get to the school and are attempting to separate the infected from the healthy. Good movie for sure.

I watched this movie a few years back, knowing it was a remake. Both movies honestly hold up really well, but this version does a fantastic job. The four main characters are what make the movie, and their dynamic. I think it's time for a rewatch.

Am I the only one seeing a connection between this movie and the game "Project Zomboid"? - both are set in the 90s - both are set in a small rural area in the US - In both the movie and the game, the military seals off the infected area without telling anyone inside or outside the perimeter - both have a misterious sickness that turns people crazy - both have the helicopter event from which you have to hide from - both have the overunning of the refugee camp, forcing the military to flee - In the older versions of the game, you had to take care of your blond wife who was injured

one of the better horror remakes.. Also Romero was just listed as a producer as a legacy credit, the crew and director already stated he has literally nothing to do with this remake and never was involved

I know how much we complained about the over saturation of zombie movies during this era, but I kinda miss it. Also kinda reminds me of the taiwanese zombie movie called the sadness. It has a similar zombie type with how they're essentially crazy people (insert sound effect). I must warn you though, its VERY dark and gory, not for the faint of heart, especially if you're sensitive to SA topics and gore.

This movie is quite good and I really recomend the comicbook tie-ins Image published before the premiere. Each issue is from the point of view of one of the crazies so you get more insight into how the virus works. The desease isn't like the typical zombie virus that kills all the higher functions of the brain or the viruses on _Blackgas, Crossed,_ and _The Sadness_ that shut-down all the impulse control instincts of a person turning them into an increasingly deraged psycho, the virus of _The Crazies_ comicbook is scarier because it starts by just intensifying any mental or emotional problem the infected already has: the guy in the baseball field had a past histoy of paranoia and allucinations so they cameback in full force, he was seeing the people on the game as shadow creatures and things like that; meanwhile the coroner was talking to his dead mother about how he would show her that he could become a doctor and that's why he started doing horrifying operations on random people; and even the hunters have some nuance because the town was descending into chaos and madness when their started to show syntoms so a lot of their early acts of violence where justifyed to the point that the reader could wonder if the hunters were really infected or just suffering from a regular mental breakdown (untill you see the film, in their last scenes those guys were clearly sick)... the comics are an awesome short reading

This movie is definitely in the re-watchable category. Anytime I see it or it’s on TV I watch it. I think it’s a great flick. Very underrated. I would’ve liked to have seen a sequel

The woman infected who was riding the bicycle in the town street is actually a star in the original 70's movie this is a remake from.

that still has to be one of the coolest shots in movie history when the camera pans out and shows the plane. Especially back then people flying drones wasn't a thing so it was a great reveal.. It's an awesome movie.

This is the first movie you’re covering I have no knowledge on so I bought the movie on prime and watched it, and boy was it a fun movie and really makes you wonder could this happen.

First had a college friend show me this movie I've never heard of late one friday night when most of our dorm went home for the weekend... still one of the best zombie outbreak portrayals I've ever seen, just fully immerses you like few others. Gotta say I was scared shitless walking back to my room after at 3 am, with a thunderstorm outside no less 😂

First watched this as a teenager and it's one of my all-time favorite horrors. The concepts at play are just so unique, even in comparison to today. As you stated, 'zombies that don't necessarily want to eat you, but just want to kill you, are terrifying'. Especially since they have cognitive capabilities, can use tools, weapons, etc. Always wished it got a sequel in that next city. The only two people that know what's about to happen trying to salvage the situation in a city with a much larger population and a lot more potential battlegrounds against The Crazies. I think it could have been great.

I never realized how underrated this movie is tho I saw it in theatres, it really is unique in its storyline and storytelling....and of course, the Olyphant effect

This has been one of my favorite apocalypse stories for a while and it's awesome to finally see someone covering it. I thought the scene where they capture the soldier was great. It turned what had previously been a bunch of masked goons into a characters with some level of depth. Seeing the soldier just being some scared kid from the south made it feel all the more real.

At first, the little sound effect irritated me. Then, I grew to love it

For anyone who likes this sort of theme as far as infected that still retain skills I’d recommend the retreat series by Craig Dilouis and Stephen knight. It has a similar premise and follows a us army unit that is trying to fight and survive through the us while most of the population is infected with a virus that turns them into bloodthirsty sadistic killers who laugh uncontrollably. It’s a dark story and very graphic with the details but it’s also really intense following this unit that is trying to keep the wheels on the bus while they change goals after each one is shown to be already gone when they reach it.

The military seizure of weapons is scary accurate, remember to take that boating trip folks

Man this is a blast from the past. I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out and while I liked it at the time, I completely forgot about it in the years since. The pitchfork scene was properly terrifying, and the whole movie was such a well done "beginning of the apocalypse" story.

this movie is very underrated... I did enjoy it when first watched it some time ago, (more than once even) wanted to studied the "zombies" movements and behavior patterns and Russell's whole character, from start to finish was was best, my favorite character and you really felt for him- when he realizes he's infected but asked if he could still walk with them while he's still "him" with the sorrow and regret in his expression... and how he sacrifices himself to distract the military personal so the other two could escape.

Nice work as usual, chief! One of my favorite horror movies right here. I was about 19 or 20 when I saw it for the first time. Must have been when it first came out on Starz/HBO. I was supposed to go hang out at my friend's place but I had to wait until he was home, so I decided to watch "The Crazies" on TV until it was time to leave. I was immediately enthralled and watched most of it before my friend called to ask where the hell I was. Needless to say, I finished it before I left, feeling deeply impressed with what I'd seen. The oppressive atmosphere gives a looming sense of dread, and makes you feel like you're up against something far beyond control. All the actors are really good, too. I get the sense that most of them gave 110 percent here. Effects are good, editing is good, lots of natural light bathing the Iowa countryside, all that fun stuff. When it's nighttime in this movie, it feels like nighttime. Doesn't look like they did any of that "day-for-night" shit. It's a rare example of a good remake, as well. Plus, this movie keeps you on your toes with its twists and turns, of which there are a perfect number. The scariest scene in the movie, in my opinion, is the scene where they're grilling that government agent about the virus. The way that guy is so obviously uncaring and almost nihilistic is really chilling to me. "We lost a plane. What do you want me to say?" Jaded, disenchanted, and incapable of empathy. It's scary to think that something like all this could really happen due to general incompetence, and scarier still to think about dealing with the sociopaths they'd send to clean it up. You'd never get through to one of those guys, not in a million years. Great movie all around. It's believable, it keeps you guessing, and it's a very, very well-made movie all around.

This movie honestly is a tamer depiction of how people who've turned crazy will act. This movie reminded me of a comic series I've read two years ago, I think it was called Crossed, where the crazy people there aren't just killers they do _anything_ that's depraved onto others or to themselves. The infection works when the infected people infect others with their bodily fluids (saliva, blood, piss, ect.). They are smart enough to use that knowledge to coat their weapons - including bullets - with it to infect people. They engage in torture, not just physical but also mental before they kill their prey, and will use them to also lure more people to be slaughtered. The comics are, obviously, very graphic, so much so that even the people who are into gore in movies and shows will understand why this series _shouldn't_ and _neither will be_ adapted.

I really liked this movie!! It’s super unique to see a small town devolve into absolute chaos. People are mistaken that small towns are safe from scenarios like this. The fact they’re so isolated from the rest of the population is what makes it scarier. I absolutely could see our government just wiping out a small town for the “greater good”

I do love that you mentioned that this almost like an unofficial Resident Evil movie because it reminds me of RE4 a lot. I liked the cast of this film too, it felt very 2010s especially with Danielle Panabaker fresh off of the Friday the 13th reboot. Timothy Olyphant is one of my favorite underrated actors - so many memorable roles this being at the top of my list.

The way this movie was in a small rural town reminded me a lot of Project Zomboid since its set in rural Kentucky and started in a small town and later the whole surrounding county (and later Louisville) So I got a lot of Zomboid vibes from this movie, great video!

Here’s a show recommendation “between” staring Jeanette McCurdy it’s about a small town isolated after a virus thing that kills al the adults it’s a bit like lord of the flies and has two seasons and it’s a pretty good show worth checking out for sure. (Also I think I’ll check out this films seems like one I’d enjoy)
