On Friday October 15th, we welcomed Duke professor and best-selling author Kate Bowler for an Online Conversation about her life, her book, and what she’s learned in her search for hope in the midst of a culture saturated with cheap optimism, toxic positivity, and performance-based merit. Kate offers a richer understanding of hope in the face of uncertainty, despair, and suffering as we begin to understand that life is a chronic condition, and there is no cure for being human.
This event was held in partnership with Duke Divinity School.
The song is "Bring the Light" by Abby Gunderson.

Oh my!!! How beautiful that all was! My younger brother just died of colon cancer oh how I tried to help and heal! Thank you for such beautiful insights of how to love. Thank you for help in seeing my own deep suffering more richly and Jesus's love towards me in it. Thank you for answering everyone with such grace!

Another thing, Dr. Bowler has helped me to see that what I do with my unhoused sisters is not worthless. I just hang out with them, take them out to lunch or to a park or to get mani-pedis. I can't cure their mental illness or addiction and I can't end their homelessness, but I can be with them and share some pain and joy. That's all I can do, and maybe that is truly enough. Thank You so much for your book 💗

“God is near the sufferer.” So true, but we don’t always see it in the moment and sometimes we can only see it in retrospect. And the bit about dark humor … yes! Kate’s a treasure! Getting her book.

Thank you for your honesty. The no BS version of the way it is. God is in the presence as the present. Blessings~

Her book is a treasure - I'm so glad I bought it. I still think it's bullshit that this beautiful young woman got cancer, though. Pure bullshit.

Illness and death are affronts to the way things ought to be, which is why "bullshit" is totally appropriate language.
