The majority of those in the AIDS-afflicted and medical communities held the drug up as the first breakthrough on AIDS. For better or worse, AZT had been approved faster than any drug in FDA history, and activists considered it a victory. The price paid for the victory, however, was that almost all government drug trials, from then on, focused on AZT - while over 100 other promising drugs were left uninvestigated. The drug was “one of the most toxic, expensive and controversial drugs in the history of medicine". In 1989, Iversen said Fauci started promoting the drug not only for critically ill AIDS patients, but for anyone who tested positive for HIV, including those who were asymptomatic and showed no sign of the disease. “Those patients included hospital workers, pregnant women and even children,” said Iversen. “Doctors were stunned.” Despite limited data, the NIH went all in on AZT, ignoring evidence that the drug was toxic, caused liver damage and destroyed white blood cells, Iversen said. “The drug continued to be used for years,” she explained. Iversen said: “Many doctors advocated that the best way to treat patients was to focus on mitigating the severity of the ailments that would ultimately kill them rather than trying to eradicate AIDS altogether, that the virus mutates too quickly to waste all resources and time on a vaccine or other preventatives that everything should be studied, all avenues explored and all options should remain on the table. But unfortunately, that’s not exactly how the AIDS epidemic was handled. “Big pharma got their payday. Millions of dollars were allocated by Congress to vaccine research, which never produced anything effective. And meanwhile, along the way, hundreds of drugs and treatment options went unexplored. And we still don’t have a cure for HIV. The epidemic never went away like people hoped. We do, however, have effective treatments that help people live a good long life with the virus. “There were a lot of mistakes made along the way. A lot of lessons that could have been learned, but after looking into the history of the AIDS epidemic, it’s curious if we’ve actually learned any. Here we are today, with a pandemic that is causing mass hysteria. Like the days of people demonizing gay men as the culprits behind the epidemic, we have the media demonizing the unvaccinated as the root cause for why this virus just won’t go away.”

Seeing Dr Fauci tear up talking about his HIV patients shows the level of compassion this guy has. I was in junior high during the AIDS epidemic and my mom lost 2 close friends from the virus. They were in their early 40's. I graduated college with a degree in health science and knew that I couldn't handle working with HIV patients because it's devastatingly sad (pediatrics was my #2 specialty I avoided because who wants to see kids dying). About 10 years ago I picked up a consulting job working with outpatient substance dependency and all of my clients were HIV+. It wasn't sad at all because of the wonderful advancements in anti-viral medications. Not one of my clients died from AIDS. I saw a documentary capturing all the events of the AIDS epidemic and I balled like a baby. It's no wonder PTSD affects Fauci and other health workers. Having the pressure of trying to save lives when the medication couldn't be studied fast enough is enough to send a sane person over the edge. I really, really want to read Fauci's book now. Thanks for having him on your show. He truly is a treasure, not just for Americans, but for the world.

Regarding the analogy about teachers: Yes, we still have many joining the fields despite the many obstacles but what many are not seeing is that too many- too many of the GREAT teachers- are leaving the profession due to the stress of many things including government legislation . It’s a rewarding field but immensely tiring and disrespected.

COVID was bad for the world, the biggest issue I saw was its politicization early on which changed the course of the response. I also don't think that we should expect young people to deal with these types of unnecessary challenges; instead we could focus on reducing the political influence and interference in healthcare?

Saving lives during a pandemic requires a patriotic united front where people comply with public health recommendations. I know as someone retired from my nursing practice that air born infections require us to mask and yes, when available, take the vaccines. Many people died because they refused to comply with CDC recommendations to protect ourselves from the spread of COVID>

Saving lives require slowing the replication of the SARS Cov-2 virus upon entry in the bloodstream. Failure to do so leads to the cytokine storms that led to hospitalizations and deaths. Plenty of prominent scientists developed protocols through anecdote and research that could have slowed this down. What did Fauci do? He slandered these scientists from the bully pulpit, refused to engage or debate with them, and pushed for their censorship. These are not the acts of a man who desires to save lives. You are all brainwashed cultists.
