A lot of people mistake Grievous retreating and escaping constantly as cowardice. I don't know about you, but recognizing a situation where you're outmatched and getting out of there is a great skill to have in a general.

This is a good point. The reason Grievous is so effective is because he knows when to cut his losses. He then shows up, often learning from said losses, to wreck house all over again. Often his loss is nowhere near the losses he inflicts upon his enemies after the fact. Meaning every victory against him is effectively a pyrrhic victory. Had he not been chained by the machinations of the Sith he could probably have won the Clone Wars.

Better to retreat in certain defeat and return to inflict great disaster upon your enemy, than to die gloriously in a false bravado death. He sacrificed druids, things easily replaced. But slaughter clones and jedi, which would be irreplaceable. Calculated losses and risks is a leadership ability.

If Obi-Wan and Anakin weren’t protected by plot armor, the only way they would survive is to do what Grievous does. Hell they actually do so sometimes in the show, specifically during the Battle of Felucia in TCW series.

There's a comic book where Grievous finds an abandoned Jedi Temple, filled with different traps similar to the ones he made in his own lair, he finds a waterfall which gives him a brief moment of experiencing the force. As punishment, it gives him a vision of who he used to be in his Kaleesh body, and that no matter what he suffered through, no matter how justified he might believe his actions are, in the end it doesn't change him. Because hatred makes people smaller, like him, and shows how much of his body and identity he has lost. Afterwards, Grievous escapes and bombs the temple, and watches for hours as it burns. "For all your talk of power...You BURN just as easily!" Happy Star Wars Month! I'd love to see you cover Kylo Ren or Darth Plagueis Next!

His use of methodical study on the specific grievances of each disenfranchised peoples aiding in the New Republics rise to power & then the use of that knowledge to exploit unique weaknesses is next level. I feel this makes him the perfect villain to combat the New Republic, a government that would’ve largely been comprised of mid-rim & outer-rim worlds who were disenfranchised by the Republic & then later in some cases, literally enslaved by the Empire. Many CIS systems pledged support to the rebellion for this very reason.

thank you so much, General Grievous is one of my favourite Characters in star wars, use to be kind of a fanboy for the murderous Cyborg, from his design, unique combat, character, his cough and his reputation. The fact he was able to contend with hundred of Jedi with his raw Cybernetic prowess, he someone that made the droids armies quit deadly, willing to do what it takes to achieve victory, and yet he try to hold onto his ancient culture, from his collecting of trophies, the mask he wears, the strive to improve his armour, and of course a warrior death, he very much the line "LET THE GALAXY BURN" due to his hatred and misery. one of my favourite story's that was in legends, was when grievous covet red lightsabres for his arsenal, he then caught wind of two young Jedi that turn to the sith and soon betray there masters, grievous hunted the two, and he found them, the fight between two skilled sith was hard and long, but grievous own raw hate overwhelm them, but when he came to claim his prize, he soon realise the two lightsabres of pure wonderful crimson, sunk into the acid bogs, his metal arms could not grab the crystals as they would melt, if he where Jedi he could use the force to bring them out, but he was not, and thus he was force to leave his prize deep in the bog, there crystals would remain there for hundreds of century's. the general hatred for fate boiled further. also another note, when grievous died, a stature was built by his people in honour for such a brutal warlord, and was worship as a god of war, his story of grief, vengeance and violence inspired many warriors of his planet, rumour is that he was reunited with the one he lost so long ago.

*Tales of the Empire* finally did him justice. For those who aren’t experienced Jedi, I imagine most people would find him terrifying. EDIT: We definitely need a *Tales of the Separatists* to explore his backstory.

26:19 This is why i love you so much man, you go into detail on what villians can do to have avoided their fall but also arent deluded in how they were limited to do so. The reason Grevious is so popular outside of his design is because he has legitimate grievances with the republic his story is emblematic of its failures and corruption. Simply telling a person/group of people who have suffered injustice at the hands of an institution to vote and petition when they are are being eradicated is insane let alone to punish them for fighting back. Would have been a more peaceable solution to display the Hucks crimes for all the republic to see in hopes of them taking action certainly but that leaves them at the mercy of a corrupt and ineffectual republic who have no vested interest in protecting the Kaleesh. Man I love the politics in star wars.

The Revenge of the Sith novelization even states that Grievous was meant to die. Palpatine was good with whatever the outcome was on Utapau as in his mind as it was meant to be a trap for Obi-Wan. Either Grievous would get him or order 66 would, as he put it, Grievous dying was an issue that would've inevitably had to be dealt with. Of course, he didn't forsee Obi-Wan surviving everything and maiming/killing all his pawns and fostering the seeds of Palpatine ultimate demise

What makes him dangerous is that he’s extremely skilled, but at the same time he absolutely doesn’t hold back on using cheap tricks to overpower his opponents. He‘s often misjudged as a coward and a mindless killing machine, but the title of general didn’t come from nothing. He thinks ahead, he’s intelligent and he has a very tactical mind in both direct duels, but also tactics in both ground assaults and space battles. I‘d love to see more of him in the future, maybe even a spin-off series dedicated to his backstory.

The man Grievous was before his transformation into a cyborg was a righteous war hero waging battles against the expansionist slavers that were the Yam'rii as far as I see it, and his backstory hinging on the failings of the Republic and the moral fall of the Jedi into dogma and politics makes his change into the aforementioned cyborg all the more ironic. Every single Jedi he slew, the Jedi Order can blame themselves and the Republic for their deaths, they created Grievous by driving Sheelal to the brink. One of Star Wars' greatest and most tragic characters, but at least Grievous had the honor of a warrior's death by Obi-Wan and went down in Kaleesh history as a god. All that said, i really think a TV show exploring Grievous's backstory would be amazing. Or at least there's potential there

Another great episode! I especially loved Grievous in the Clone Wars shorts where he was portrayed like a force of nature, a nightmare the Jedi had a reason to fear the moment they heard his voice, and a fighting style that made full use of Tartakovsky's awesome battle scene choreography. Future potential villains to analyze I can think of are: John Ryder (Hitcher) The Ultimate Despair (Danganronpa) The High Evolutionary (Guardians of the Galaxy 3)

It's important to not that to the Kaleesh not getting a proper burial means no afterlife regardless of achievements. So to loose Ronderu lij Kummar's body at sea was a massive blow to Qymaen jai Sheelal because it meant they would be separated for an eternity. Being put in a synthetic insectoid like body was also a huge insult. Especially when layered with the fact he was now made to be an enslaved world conquer with mindless drones replacing his skilled elite. He was made into everything he hated.

Grievous was raised and lived in a warlike culture on the outskirts of known galaxy, where there were no real laws and institutions. In these places only might makes right, so it's not surprised that people hailing from these places like Grievous or Anakin (Tatooine is also Outer Rim/Hutt Space) were likely to resort into taking situation into their own hands, instead of relying on courts, laws or restraint in their actions. It's not really surprising that Grievous lashed out against cruel universe in the only way he knew, through violence and losing himself to it. I am also not sure if we can apply human morality to an alien like Grievous. Overall a very interesting character with some tragic undertones, if presented properly.

There are two stories I think are very good when discussing the inner workings of his mind. His interaction with a Jedi temple where he communed with the cosmic force and out of the confusion he resorted to violence and rejected the notion of change as he was too far gone at that point. The second story is when he fought a certain Jedi he was so impressed with her that when she was defeated he placed her body in the corner in order to give her a dignified death. His psyche was torn asunder by the conflicting life he had after the changes and his life prior to it.

I appreciate you including "Legends" details. They truly have a lot to add to the characters to the point that Disney just ends up adopting more and more expanded universe stuff to their own canon as they go on. Also I gotta say it, man; you really are the perfect dude to be "analyzing evil". You look like you'd be right at home wearing a druidic robe, face obscured by a large hood, ready to take people to meet someone or, something, that's openly only ever referred to as "The Dark Lord". You look like you've existed across generations in service to said Dark Lord and if people look at ancient drawings, paintings, or engravings of past events they might see you depicted in such. You really got the perfect look for your content and it's sick as hell.
