The last song from the last album. A tribute from Neil to his lost family members and ended up being an incredible swan song for Rush as a whole. Alex, Geddy, and Neil carefully planted and nourished a beautiful, magnificent Garden and we still get to enjoy it every day. If you'll excuse me ... I think I have something in my eye.

😢 I still tear up when listening to this song (probably always will). Geddy did have a harder time with the higher register in later years, but to me, it makes this performance even more powerful.

I had the pleasure to cook dinner for Geddy when he came into the restaurant I worked at. And being a life long Rush fan after he finished his meal I went out and met him. He signed a menu with a nice message to me and took a good few minutes to talk with me. He was so nice and had no problem at all taking time for a nice chat. A truly genuine person.

This isn't the most complicated song written by Rush, or the most technically impressive, and yet it remains one of the most powerful farewells that I have ever heard. Rest in peace Neil Peart, he will be missed forever.

As you probably already know, this was the last song on their last album. This was Neil's way of saying "Goodbye" , and I get choked-up every time I listen to it, knowing what's coming years later. 😢 So obvious you're becoming a RUSH fan!!

At this point in my life, after several losses, it amazes me how a man I never met, or knew, can affect me so much. A true Renaissance man. This particular song touches every button and heart string. This was the Daddy-Daughter dance at my daughter's wedding reception. We both wore concert shirts over our formal clothes. The DJ loved the song and said he had never done a Rush song for this dance. An amazing memory!

The perfect finale to a band's career and a tribute to their beautiful lives. They had their peaks but never declined in skill and creativity. They never became a nostalgia act.

I always cry when I listen to this. Especially when I see Neil. It’s just heart wrenching to watch. The fact that it’s their very last song on the final album. The meaning behind the lyrics, and especially the connection to Neil, and the relevance to it. RIP Neil, you will always be missed, but never forgotten. 😢❤

"with tears in my eyes I write this" There are many moments in ones life that we remember where we were when a moment happened, I remember clearly where I was hearing this for the first time. For some reason I knew this was the end. It still hits just as hard today. Rush's last song, Neil's last song. Crushes me to this day.

Lifeson's guitar work on this song is gorgeous.

The lyric "The future disappears into memory With only a moment between Forever dwells in that moment" might be my favourite Neil wrote. Think about it. It basically sums up how life is experienced. All we have is the moment we are in.

Like someone else commented, this was Neil's way of saying, "Goodbye." to all of us without us even knowing what he was going through. May he forever Rest In Peace.

It can't be 11 years since this song came out. Geddy's diction (and Neil's lyrical word choice) has always made it really easy to hear what he was saying. And you are spot on about his deliberateness with diphthongs. As usual, you have a wonderful glow about you while you are listening to Rush. I love that they make you get a little flustered and make you grin. Geddy's voice changed as he aged; the highest pitches from earlier songs became unreachable, but the broadness of his sound increased giving the newer songs a different, wider tonal scale he could use. The band realized this (of course) and even dropped the tuning of some of their older songs when live to make it easier for Geddy to reach the top notes. It makes for a different sound and the renditions of some of the older songs can come across as a bit strained in later concerts. Of course, the newer songs were written with his present voice in mind, so there wasn't any fiddling needed with them.

Man, did they build an impressive garden. One that will never age or whither.

Very few bands write such a meaningful album after doing it for over 40 years! Clockwork Angels is as relevant as any of their music. The Garden is an absolute gem.

The best band I ever have or ever will see live in concert. Absolute masters.

The Garden makes me tear up every time I hear it, it is such a beautiful introspective song and represents Rush's philosophy so well. I can't help but think how pleased Neil must have been to hear it all come together for the first time with the addition of the string section - a quietly glorious, sad yet uplifting, heartfelt thing of beauty - and their final gift to us. Thank you, guys, may your music live forever.

And with this song, Rush closes their final chapter. I can only come back to this one on rare ocassions. Pretty emotional.

With over 40 years of music, I feel as if I grew up along with these guys, with this song being the culmination of what we've experienced. It breaks my heart that Neil is gone, but I feel so fortunate to have been in this world at the same time as Rush.

38 years on from their first tour and the first time they had other musicians on stage (apart from the odd guest appearance). The string section really added something to this concert. Geddy lost the ability to hit some of those really high notes so, as a Rush fan from the very beginning, it is interesting to see how he adapted his voice over time. The Garden, being the final track on their final studio album will always have a special place in the hearts of all Rush fans. Thsi was a stunning performance.

Some have mentioned it already but the day this album came out I purchased it. I listened to it and song by song I instantly realized it was going to be a classic. I was thrilled that it was not only great, but I enjoyed the rock opera feel. This album was a story. I didn't have a heads up on that and was pleasantly surprised by it. I was so happy......till "The Garden." It sounded beautiful. Too beautiful. The lyrics kicked in and I knew something was wrong. Something was happening. I never stop a song I am listening to for the first time, and I did several times. As some have written, I knew it was the end. Of what, I had no idea. By the end of the song, I was nearly having a meltdown. Irrationally emotional. It was a masterpiece, and I felt that would be the last song. Rush was over. I had no idea about Neil, his illness, or the gravity of it. I just knew that he wrote every word for Rush, and the man that wrote The Garden was writing about finality and saying goodbye. When I got the news Neil passed, I went over, put on the song and I could feel every single line come to life. A living farewell. A lesson on what matters. One last gift.

This song always bring a tear to my eye. Not just because it's a beautiful song, but because it's the last track on their last album. It signifies the end of Rush to me.

It's so cool to see somebody with your youth and musical background starting to really appreciate these three guys and what they were and how incredibly talented and diverse they were for 45 years on stage. Even more amazing... through all the fame and fortune these three guys were best friends, never let their egos etc detract from what was important to them. All three of these guys got married young, had kids and put their wives, kids, families and friendships at the top of importance in their lives, which is so unusual in this business.

The words to this song are so sad, especially since Neil died a short time after, quite unexpectedly to most of us. Us Rush fans have had to grow up in the past few years, and realize good things don't last forever, and that life goes by in a flash. The measure of a life, we all know the gifts these three guys gave to us, and I thank them !

Yay, Rush--the band that influenced everyone's influences. I was fortunate enough to see them a few times over the years, and it was always an experience that make me strive to be a better musician.

I appreciate that you noticed Geddy changing tone/inflection/meaning to lyrics that were repetitive in the chorus or other parts. Rush is really good at that especially in the percussion also. Neil typically changes up his fills in an area he repeats in most songs to bring new intention to parts. They are just brilliant virtuoso musicians❣️. Please check out Freewill from their Rio tour in 2002 released in 2003. He can still hit the high notes!

After 2005 or so, Geddy's voice was incapable of hitting the same pitch he could hit when younger but became warmer and richer. IMO it was a pretty good tradeoff.

To write such poignant words shows how fully aware Neil was at the situation he was facing and how fulfilled a life it was...such a brilliant artist...RIP Professor.

I held it together til the 17-minute mark and that was it. I cried like a schoolgirl. Man it tears me up seeing neil play one of his last shows and knowing we'll never see them on stage again. I saw the Clockwork Angels Tour in Minneapolis Sept. 24th 2012. At that time in my life Rush was my favorite band. The music was fantastic. This tour was the first and only time that they had an orchestra tour with them. Of course Geddy Lee's voice had drastically changed and was unable to hit the high notes that he was able to in his earlier years, and had to struggle at times, but I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to see them. Rest In Peace Neil I miss you. In my mind you were and still are the greatest!

As many have said it appears this was Neil's farewell. Closing a chapter in his life to open a new one in his retirement. Sadly, it was a shorter than hoped and he was taken far too soon. Neil said the least of all 3 but, still spoken the greatest volume in his songs. This song grips me so strongly. I pair it with Time Stand Still. Life was moving so fast.

I have been a Rush fan for years, but I didn't run out and buy "Clockwork Angels" and have only recently really heard "The Garden". It brings great meaning to me because my parents both died within four months of each other within four months in the last few months of 2021. Sitting at my mother's grave this past summer, the one thing that helped me meditate was pulling out my phone and listening to "The Garden". I'm struck by the strings, which seem to be playing the melody of the old hymn "In The Garden," but with vibrato, like the wind washing through willow fronds. It is a lyric born of maturity, written by Neil, sung with a performance born of maturity by Geddy.

Its so amazing how Rush create their best record at the end.

I’m glad you dig RUSH! I play drums and have seen every tour since 1977. Neil Peart is the ultimate percussionist-drummer-lyricist. His command of the drums are like no other and his command of the English language and literature are second to none! Saw them twice on their Angels tour. Great track off what I think is their best album. After all, they kept improving throughout their careers. They never lost a step or beat playing live.

Yeah this is indeed a beautiful song from Rush. Another Canadian band comes to mind when I think of Rush. And I think it could be a very good reaction video. The band is called Triumph! Do a reaction on any live video of “Lay it on the Line”. I said any, because they are very good live. Anyone else here remember Triumph???

What I've always enjoyed about Rush's music is the pure depth of emotion in Geddy's voice, which is so beautifully brought out by the elements you discussed, and perfectly complemented by the instrumental arrangements, helping to bring out the pure poetry in Neil's lyrics. Over the decades Alex has played some amazing solo's, but I feel this is one of his best if not the best.... The Garden is closer to the heart to so many people than any song, by anyone...

I don't think he could have sang this in the early part of his career. His voice certainly mellowed with age, in a good way. The concert was awesome, an experience to remember. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve had so many people listen to this song, yet no one so far has been moved by it like I have. I don’t understand how it falls on deaf ears. It is a beautiful song.

For my money, this is the most beautiful and poignant song ever written. Although Neil wasn't sick yet when he wrote it, it now sounds like he was writing his own eulogy. Even without that context, though, it's still breathtaking in its musical beauty and lyrical maturity and wisdom that cuts right to the heart of what life is all about. How fitting that it was its author's final message to the world: Go forth and tend your garden.

Geddy's vocals matured as his career progressed. He always took very good care of it. Even while playing hundreds of shows. That's how Rush was as whole. They always had to do everything perfect, otherwise what was the point of doing it. In the R40 tour you could tell from the recording he was wearing out but still pressed on and sounded great. True professional.

The Clockwork Angels tour was such a departure for Rush. An orchestra, Alex on keyboard, and this song that brings a tear to the eye.

Rush is my favorite band. They provided the soundtrack for my life for the last 45 years. I'm so happy to see their music appreciated by others. Now, you have to get into Judas Priest.

This song was so special to my baby brother and I- we were both drummers until we lost him at only 45 a year ago almost to the day. This was the last song we had played at his funeral. So meaningful. RIP Lil brother and Neil.

I tear up everytime I hear this. I can't help it. The lyrics are so powerful, so meaningful, and thought provoking. This song is, in my opinion, what music is about. The feelings a song can illicit, the memories they trigger... It's a gift. Rush, as a band, is a gift.

I am so happy to hear that you love Geddy's voice in his later years. I agree! His voice became so rich and melodic as he aged. He had to lower his range an octave because he started to struggle with the high notes as he aged. Even though he lowered it, he still tried to sing things a bit too high, and you can hear his method of reaching the high notes. He has this thing he does where he swings his voice into place, and you can almost always hear him crack. It doesn't sound bad. As you get used to it, it begins to sound intentional. Almost like a trill. This song always reminds me how much Rush means to me, and how much I still miss them. They are still such a huge part of my life, and this song has become more and more important. Not only in its lyrics, but to me it also reminds me of the end of Rush, and Neil's death. It was as though Neil was saying goodbye. This song is truly a tearjerker. I have been obsessed with Rush almost my whole life. I've listened since I was in Jr. High in 1976, but since Neil's death I have been listening to them over and over and over. I can't get enough. I watch every live performance I can find on KZfaq again and again.

It took Neil 50 years of reading and incomparable hardship and perseverance to pen, inarguably, his best lyrics; they encompass so much. And Alex and Geddy masterfully wrapped them with the ideal music. I follow Alex and Geddy in their paths after RUSH stopped, but I sorely miss Neil; I miss reading his website, I miss Bubba's Diner, I miss the occasional anecdote about him, I miss looking forward to another travel book. When my wife passed I read Ghost Rider for a third time, and I miss wondering if by some infinitesimally miniscule chance we'd cross paths at a rural roadside stop on our moto's.

I love Geddy’s voice throughout the years, it changes just as the band evolves over time.
