What blows me away is that he was a teenager when he wrote these lyrics. This song may top my list of the ten songs I’d want to have with me on an isolated island. No doubt about it.

And not just the lyrics. From what I understand, I read about it somewhere at one point, he also composed the music on piano and knew what he wanted the guitars etc to do. It is brilliant. I also like Seasons of wither. They should have released that as a single. They never did so it never really got much air play. It's from their second album. It's almost as good as dream on.

I've been an Aerosmith fan since their first album, which this song was on. I think one of the best things about Steven Tyler's voice was its grittiness. It was raw but had a balance that fluctuated between that raw sound and a smooth effortlessness. Great band. FYI---Steven wrote this song when he was 16! Just amazing. Nice reaction, Bethany. Keep them coming.

I haven’t been to many concerts in my life, but seeing Aerosmith in concert was definitely a dream of mine fulfilled! When my husband was at a mall in Boston years ago Steven Tyler was there shopping alone. He and my husband looked at each other for a moment. I was extremely jealous!

Great choice of performances. One of a kind voice here...his natural gift. It is incredible knowing the kind of miles this voice has on it that it was sounding this...well...so Steven Tyler. Your expressions, worth the price of admission...at least as engaging as the music video! You look ready for a night out on the town in this video 😉 . Good work!

He's smart in that he saved his higher register note/chorus for specific times. Of course, few have fried their vocal chords like this man. It's amazing he can sing at all. I always loved his lower voice (which he uses here) and wish he would have used it more in their music. With that said, what a band/singer.
@lisascorp

He really used his lower voice on the album Get Your Wings; their 2nd album. I'd say on every song on it. It's my favorite album they ever did. I didn't hear it until it had been out for a few years because I was only 8 when it came out.

The change in delivery at the beginning of the “dream on” bits is something he does from time to time live as a reference to the way he sang it on the album in 1973. When Aerosmith first went into the studio Steven was very unsure about his voice, and though he sounded too angelic or “willie the white boy” as he put it. He wanted to sound more like a black singer so he put this voice on that sounded older and more “soul than rock”. It’s something he can do on command, in fact if you seek out the live version of dream on from 1997 in Germany he does the false voice the entire second verse of the song. It’s an incredibly impressive transition, give it a look :)

I got to see them live in the 90s. Back when cigarette lighters were still a thing at rock shows. Seeing a coliseum filled with little pinpricks of fire all bouncing in rhythm to Dream On while Aerosmith just crushed it on stage was a hell of a thing. Also, no one who's ever been to an Aerosmith concert ever wonders why Steven Tyler is so skinny. Dude must have run several miles going back and forth from one wing of the stage to another during the concert, all while singing his guts out. The sheer athleticism to be able to do that and still sing perfectly is astonishing. They put on a fantastic show.

Hi, I really love your videos!! I'm very curious about your opinion on "Homayoun Shajarian - Heavy Make Up". Its kinda hard to find a good quality record of that song on youtube but if you can please listen it. I'm not even into that genre but it gives a different vibe like "Orphaned Land - Norra El Norra"(which I'm also not a total fan of group) but I think those are technically different and maybe gets your attention. You r the nicest and you have the best approach to music and its offerings imo. Keep it UP!

Also watched your reaction to DIMASH Sinful Passion. Nice 👍 Though not vocally acrobatic but a great female singer probably one of my favorites with Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Ann Wilson etc is Dorothy Martin of the band DOROTHY. Magnanimous TONE!! Also Taylor Momsen ( aka Cindy Lou who) of THE PRETTY WRECKLESS. I have 4 Tower speakers with my Harman/Kardon and CRANK the heck out of these two. Peace 🕊️☮️

This is one of those rare songs that everyone thinks they can sing, even if you couldn't carry a tune with a bucket in each hand, like me. But it doesn't matter if you nail every note or just make a public spectacle of yourself by trying...we'll all sing it at the top of our lungs anyway.

I bought this album when it came out my freshman year of high school back in '73. This probably is the song Aerosmith is best known for. I've watched videos from their "Peace Out" farewell tour here on KZfaq, Steven's voice is still fairly strong, although they're taking a little break right now so he can rest. Hopefully they'll be back on the as they're supposed to play near me in December.

"Dream On" was originally released as a single from their 1973 eponymously titled first album. Neither the single nor the album did well on the charts during its initial release (the single, which was edited down for radio play, initially stalled at number 59 in September 1973); it would not be until after the success of their third album, 1975's Toys in the Attic, that interest in the band's first two albums would rise. "Dream On" was then re-released as a single in late 1975 (this time unedited), and reached number 6 in April 1976. It was the only time Steven had sang in his normal voice; he would use an exaggerated voice (as if trying to sound like James Brown) on most of the band's best-known songs.

Unfortunately, even back in the late 80s and 90s he was using either a backstage singer or recordings for the challenging notes of songs. Whether this was to save his voice so he could last a whole tour, or because he simply couldn’t do it anymore, period, I don’t know. My guess would be so he could survive the whole tour. You could often see his lip-syncing not matching the audio. I caught them in Vancouver for the Pump tour in March of 1990, and you could see and hear during songs like Angel and this song that any super high sustained notes it wasn’t him singing. He’d be miming his heart out, but the audio didn’t exactly match his mouth. Pretty sure at that show it was someone else singing backstage. I would imagine if they were using recordings, why not use recordings of his own voice? I don’t think anyone used recordings on stage that far back in time anyway. I don’t think that would become a thing for quite a few years yet. I don’t know if he was “not singing” at any point in this one. Just sayin’… Though it is interesting that in this official clip they chose at that point to do a ton of super fast cuts so you can’t see him properly.
