The 1977 4BT Cummins Ford F250 demonstrates a Cold Start and uses the Grid Heater for a starting aid. Square Junk Harry also is started for fun. Temps overnight were -5* F and about 20* F at the time of the start.
The Ford has a 4BT Cummins, ZF547, BW1356, Dana 60-80. This truck is a cold starting champ. Even with two worn 1000CCA batteries, the grid heater makes for no drama.

Awesome awesome video. So cool to see what you do with the throttle pedal too when starting. Please keep making these, maybe a little better view in the square body next time you start it of the pedal box. Thanks for posting this!!!

Haha I love your videos but the pedal pads always bothered me being that I have an 81 and has the same pedal configuration.😂 Glad you didn’t have any shame in it and possibly helped some others out too👍🏻

Thanks for your videos, seeing the performance capabilities of your setup helps! I know you’re using a dodge frame but do you know about designing or purchasing 4bt engine mounts for 67-77 f250 4x4? I’d be interested in learning more about your engine mounts (with the more vibrations of a 4 cylinder). Thanks!

i wonder if the grid heater is the same for the 6bt as the 4bt, same size power ect but with 1/3 less air to heat up.. would make sense as its usually easier/cheaper to keep the list of part numbers and designs small

The 4BT never came with a grid heater to my knowledge. The grid heater on this engine is for a 6BT. It took minimal engineering to put on the 4BT. Good point!

Grab the input shaft of a spare transmission and try and turn it with cold oil in it - then from now on out you will put your foot on the clutch when starting....

Could you do a cold start without using the block heater or grid heater? That would be cool to see. I've got a 4bt in a Ranger and think these swaps and the 6bt swaps are so cool.

I have an older video of starting the truck at -10 F without any aids. It was not happy but started. I may do another this winter.

The old green ford is deadly love the truck but with all the oil burning in square junk Harry am I smelling a 453 Detroit swap?

The 453 isn't powerful enough, too heavy, and too expensive, but would be so cool if I wanted a novelty of a truck. I was also looking into 6V53's, but again, huge weight, and expensive. We'll see. I'd like to do a diesel swap on this truck, but that's not all that is in store for Square Junk Harry. Big changes coming!

The engine makes 485 foot pounds of torque to the wheels. It hauls trailers very nicely. The chassis is rated to haul around 9000 pounds. I have done more.

I’m confused… so you can start your diesel in negative temps and the diesel doesn’t gel?

Yes, down to -30 F so far. I use an additive and the winter blend diesel we get in the North West can handle cold temps. The only times it will gel is if there's water in the fuel.

Have you thought about a waste veggie oil conversion? I know it’s probably not a good idea where you live because of the colder climate conditions but for someone that lives in the south ( Mwah per say ) lol. It is something to think about. I know it’s a lot of work to find, gather and filter said oil but hey free is free!! Just wondering what your thoughts are on the subject because I am gathering the parts and planning on a diesel swap in my 1979 international scout 11.

No such thing as a free puppy pahtna... considering the pres - elect... might not be a bad option ... The BTs .. IDIs and even 7.3 powerstrokes will pretty much eat anything ya stuff down their throat holes... make sure the lubrication is there when you’re making your blend

I worked on a VW TDI with a waste oil conversion. It was run in Upstate New York, so it is possible to do in colder climates. It is a cool concept meant for long run times with two complete fuel systems. The veggie tank had an electric heater, coolant lines ran down the veggie fuel lines to make sure they stayed warm, and it was started and shut off on diesel fuel to prevent gelling. It's a lot of work, especially gathering, storing, and, making the fuel.

@@RustyJunkExhibition yeah from the research I’ve done gathering and filtering the oil would be the biggest problem but just the thought of driving long distance without paying for fuel is enticing to say the least. I don’t know what fuel prices are where you live but here in Alabama it’s about 2.29 a gallon and it’s hurting my pocket book. Lol. If you don’t mind saying what is mpg on your old Ford? My 2004 dodge is not bad at 23 mpg average but it’s also been deleted. Love the Cummins engines and wish they were in every vehicle on the road. Lol

Don’t do it. Veggie conversion are garbage. I’ve helped multiple friends build systems for IDI trucks and the whole thing isn’t worth the time or money investment. Especially now that it’s harder to get good clean oil.
