Do you want to become a real witch and are wondering how to start your witchcraft journey?
My name is Bex and I have been a practicing, secular witch for almost 18 years now - mainly focusing on kitchen witchery, cottage witchcraft, and green witchcraft.
Today I am going to share a thorough step-by-step guide with you on how you as a witchcraft beginner can become a real witch and what to keep in mind when starting your witchcraft journey. I do hope you enjoy my ¨baby witch tips¨ / tips for beginner witches.
As always, these tips for beginner witches come from my personal experience and background and are not written in stone, so take the ones that resonate with you and disregard the ones that don't.
This video does not only contain advice for beginner witches but Might also be a good refresher for more seasoned practitioners - we all live and learn :)
Witchcraft is an umbrella term for many different practices from all around the world that are all built on some kind of cultural, spiritual, traditional, religious, or philosophical belief.
Witchcraft is a craft, practice, and lifestyle. In itself, it is not a religion.
However, Wicca in all its subcategories is a religion and the people following the various branches of Wicca do practice witchcraft.
Some witches might be pagan, thus follow one or more pagan pantheons, work with deities of following ancient pagan traditions, celebrations, and practices. However, not all pagans automatically practice witchcraft.
In this video, I will be speaking about witchcraft in its simplest form - as a craft without any religious ties. But all of the 12 steps will apply to anyone following a Wiccan or pagan path too.

Lovely video Bex, because magick is exactly this, something so simple that a complicated world has some difficulty understanding. We, witches are here to remember and try to show how it feels good and how it is easy to be connected to the nature, to this great mother earth that keep nourishing and protecting us. This is exactly what I was looking for. In the past I thought being a witch meant worshiping the god and goddess and celebrating the sabats but now I see that is more Wicca and being a witch is more mindfulness and energy intention work. That’s definitely more my thing as I am sort of in the closet about this but want to practice fully m. Thanks for making this video 🙏

Love this. Being a witch can be as simple or as flamboyant as you like. Some days I may just do a 5-10 min morning guided meditation and one thing I do everyday is when I am stirring my morning cup of coffee , I say/ set an intention for the day. Something as simple as “ with this brew I will find peace and calmness all the day through”. Simple. ,

I am a Grey witch, practicing for just over 30 years now. The Craft has evolved so much over the years. You have iterated the base of Craft perfectly. The first years of Craft can be a little tedious as you learn to ground, visualize and gather your power/intention but it is absolutely vital. One thing that I would advise is to practice and study for the first year or so as a solitary witch and don’t seek a coven until you have enough knowledge to chose wisely. If any coven insists that you take off your clothes, avoid that unless you completely resonate with that. There is no one tradition that holds the “ Truth” or “Power”. Engage critical thought at each step.

I also realized that I have already been creating my grimoire as you suggested. Nice wand idea. my wand idea is a bit more on the sentimental side: my maternal family is from the north of spain( asturias), and in the house there was a big old yew( one of the most magical trees for the ancient astur people) that sadly had been cut down by some horrible people who inherited the house because of , well, complicated issues too long to explain here. The thing is, before that happened, years ago, i got a fallen branch from the yew after an electric storm, and i decided to keep it to use it as a harry potter wand for cosplay. now i am carving it properly into an actual wand and i am so glad it will be made from the yew that my ancestors planted and that, sadly, is no longer there. Funny detail : my wand in pottermore when i did the test, was made of yew too. What are the chances? XD

I absolutely love your videos. Thank you for what you do! I’m Secular/Agnostic, and sometimes I feel silly being so drawn to Witchcraft; however, watching this video really reaffirms the reasons why I am so drawn to it in the first place. Witchcraft to me represent intention, mindfulness, self work, appreciating the life around us, the people around us, and all the little things in between. Life and everything around us is absolutely magical.

One of the best and most useful things I’ve ever heard you say thus far was that you prefer not to label yourself as a specific witch because when using labels you are limiting yourself and abilities!!!! That has resonated with me and took off so much pressure because I, in the beginning thought you were supposed to know or figure out what type of witch you are and you simply said “you don’t”!!! So thank you!!!!

The internet has literally revolutionized witchcraft in that when I was a teen the books that were on the shelf were by writers like silver ravenwolf, cass eason, fiona Horne ect, it was very wicca dominated. I didn't know you could be a witch without being a wiccan until the birth of the internet as the books out there were very gardenian in nature there wasn't much else available Edit: all the writers I mentioned although I don't read their stuff so much now, they are all great writers and legendary in their field. Totally relate! I have been practicing off and on since the early 90s. Wicca and Western European traditions were biased when it came to books on the market. I learned with other witches this way, and today I’m finally connected to my own personal style-which is not Celtic. I ended up giving away so many of my Scott Cunningham and Ravenwolf books to those who would cherish them so I could make room for materials that were more meaningful to me.

when you described making spells your own I immediately thought of how I cook. My husband always gets frustrated that I don't cook from a recipe - I have never followed a recipe to a T because it felt boring and confining. I've only began to consider witchcraft recently but I'm finding a lot of parallels to things I do anyway.

I was just curious and intrigued. I didn't know witches were real. Oddly someone on KZfaq said they were a witch and they were very nice and not how people stereotype witches. I've started a journey and path on reconnecting with myself, opening up again, embracing my broken past, learning balance, and exploring different options of different things, so obviously, talking to a witch who seemed to act similarly to me intrigued me to know more. I see I'm sort of already unintentionally on this sort of path. This obviously is making me more interested. Magick sounds interesting too. I recently have begun to believe that everything, in a way, is magical. Science itself is something that puzzles scientists and makes them want to discover more about the world. In a way, isn't it magical that we have electricity, medicine, chemical reactions, or even devices that connect to the internet, which is invisible to the naked eye? It makes sense to me that it would also exist in more simple things such as nature that we can see as well as the energies we simply feel. Our very existence could be classified as magical. Perhaps this is just my strange way of viewing things.

have you followed the path, how are you finding it? I struggled with accepting I have always felt and done these things.... as a Christian I felt like it was wrong for me to follow these things that I was intuitively drawn to - cunundrum. However, I met a couple of people who showed me that I am indeed a witch in so many of my daily activites. I find my belief in God has only strengthened my practice as all of the things I use are God given, connecting and appreciating these things further deepens faith. Funny how when let go of other peoples beliefs things come together more naturally.

@@Rescuemaven oh I understand this feeling so well and went though it for years. I was gifted my first set of tarot cards and while I felt very proud that the woman who gave them to me thought I should be reading and that I am a natural healer...I didn't want anyone else to know and those poor cards sat in a closet for years. And then I met a woman who was a Christian and a witch! I asked about being conflicted adn she said one enforces the other. Doctors aren't embarrassed to use the knowledge they have been educated with and this is much the same. God created these plants, this energy... she believed, as I do now, that not learning and using that which we have been given by our creator is foolishness. She showed me some things and suggested that I treat it like learning medicine - first do no harm, pray, meditate and ground yourself for protection because if you believe there is good - then there is also evil and if you open doors willy nilly you could be inviting evil in... do everything with intent for yourself, for others... I thank God for blessing daily, but I am greatful for the sun, the moon, the oceans, mountains, plants, flowers, thier healing powers... and I thank God who has provided all these things to us, what a loving and benevolent creator right? I find the more I practice the more I feel spiritually connected and the more I feel spirit led, the more I want to practice - it is a beautiful symbiosis! I think the control comes from certain dogmas that you don't have to follow! Finally, being crawn to things of medieval orgin is in no way evil

Everything is energy and the Witch just bends it. For five years of dabbling and only in the past three years getting serious into practice, I would say that staying in a good place mentally and emotionally heavily affects your power to move energy and you can't just think and only think about life and the things you want to manifest, you must live it and feel it!

As a new witch/baby witch, the practice doesn't seem as heavy when you talk about it. I have been practicing for about 3 months focusing a lot on crystals and herbalism. It has been so therapeutic to watch my herbs grow and to feel the different energies from each crystal as I hold them. There's a lot of information and things can get overwhelming really quickly. I really appreciate you breaking things down and making it feel more light (the only word that is really coming to me at the moment). I just found your channel and am looking forward to watching. My grandmother passed away during the pandemic. She didn’t have covid but was in her late 90’s. The forced quarantine…not being allowed to see her family/friends was extremely hard on her. Very sad that she lived through so much but the confusion, fear and hopelessness of covid was too much. My Grandma was British and served in the Royal Air Force during WWII. She married an American soldier and came to this country on the Queen Mary. She shared some of her “paranormal” experiences with me. My grandfather died very young as a result of contracting TB during his service. My grandmother was staying in family housing at the TB hospital when she heard “The Death Knock”…three loud distinct thumps on the door. She immediately went to her husbands ward to learn he had just passed. My grandma showed us how to make “communication” with spirits using homemade “Witch Boards”. She also read tea leaves and was incredibly accurate. She didn’t charge money or anything and people constantly asked for her “help”. I asked her if she was a Witch when I was a teenager and she simply said “yes”. I am extremely interested in your content, thank you for posting.

I just found your channel this week, and of all the witches I have come across online, I relate most to your practice -- secular, simple, seasonal, green, kitchen, cottage, with lots of herbs & nature. I've been slowly wading into witchcraft for about four years without rushing myself. Along the way, I have found that I often don't relate to the information about witchcraft readily available online or even in witchy books, which is fine, but it does take some time to wade through it and reflect on it. Just recently I'm feeling a deeper connection, everything is coming together, and I'm finding a path that really suits me. Your videos feel like "home" and are a perfect inspiration for my quiet, practical, nature- and home-based practice :) I also love your calm vibe. Thank you for taking the time! P.S. Is your first language German? I would love to see videos in German from time to time if that interests you :)

Watching on the TV so I can comment on my computer at the same time heehee. You probably expecting me to say this, heehee, in my heritage, a witch/spiritworker/healer is one and the same, but I find this is most common in 3rd world country where folk healing and spirit work are combined. But what I love about your video is you show that it is across cultures, religions etc., we can all walk the path together :) xo. This is definitely the most broad welcome to the path video I have come across and I'm so glad you made it! Ohhh, the blackberry recipe! Is that a hint of a new video to come?! Ohhh you are... the best! I LOVE that the ground work you noted are all about the mind, body and soul and not about how to set up an altar, or what tools are needed etc. You bring it back to the heart of the craft and how very much it's connected to us on such a deep personal level. So SOOOO glad you are a voice on KZfaq. Also grateful you talk about visualization and that there are other options. I say I SEE and sometimes I do, but more so, I can sense/feel the energy formulating the 'vision' if that makes sense. You've provided alternatives for different learning approaches too which is so great! 4.... Sigh... Yup. 4. You actually have a very animist approach, which I totally get .. cuz ... me too! :) I always watch for the first buds on the trees in spring, and the first falling leaf or snow fall in the fall and winter. I image (yes you can cringe :P) fae taking rides on the leaves as they fall to the earth, heehee. One of the things I love to do under water and also utilizing wind is clearing out energy on a cellular level. We may appear solid, but we aren't. There is space between our cells and we are held together by vibrations, so when I shower, or stand in the wind or a rain/snow storm, I open those spaces up to allow the elements in to purify, cleanse, ground and recharge me. I have a very intimate relationship with them, and value their importance. (hopefully the scientist in you didn't just shake her head heehee). Definitely research!!! and then... discard what you've read if your own connections tell you something different :) I found this to be very true as my path was shaped by my heritage and cultures which are very different than mainstream crafters. I think this can be extremely valid when it comes to use of colours, crystals, magick use of herbs and chakras etc. I love your view of shadowwork being a tool for deconstructing what was. I refer to it as rewriting the narrative. Definitely appreciate that you said it's not a crutch. I believe the magick is actually from within us, it is us, but... It's work. I can't wait for the detailed videos! - OMGoddess, we still have 10 mins and look how long this is LOL. I have gone years with my only tool being myself. But I think I was lucky in that my grandparents practice really focused on the divine within and connecting to that energy. Plant medicine was also a huge part, but mama would use what grew (for the most part) on her land. Little harder for me when I lived in apartments and couldn't grow anything, heehee. A really cool way to work a spell that calls for ingredients you don't have, is to go to your cupboard and pull out all your spices and fruits etc. Focus on the energy of the spell and close your eyes and move your hands over them, and feel the energy of the ones that call out to work with you in the workings you are attempting. I do the same with crystals, which I didn't work with until I turned 31! So they are definitely not required, but I have definitely developed an amazing relationship with them since then :) Thank you for doing this video, but more so, for making your channel a safe space for all witches of all paths to come together. xo

Oooh what a lovely video! Thank you! ❤️🙏 So, it would seem that to one degree or another, I have been practicing witchcraft without even knowing it, but I am drawn more and more to really identifying as a witch. I am told that some of my ancestors were witches and so it must have been bubbling away inside of me all along! What a beautiful way of living! 🙏❤️

Thank you for making this video. I have only just been drawn to witchcraft. I came from a forced religion background that became toxic and traumatic, and when I finally left I swung all the way to the other side: a pro-science atheist while nothing is real unless science can prove it and the points don't matter. I still believe that science is very important to the world, but I've only just recently had the epiphany that it's not just one or the other. I can have a spirituality without religion, and believe in things that can be proven, and for the things that can't, I can fill in my own blanks. Because of both my religious upbringing and my science background, I avoided witchcraft as something that was "silly", but it's been explained to me (by others, and now by you) that witchcraft is everything that I really wanted: an independent, self-focused spirituality. I can have my cake, and eat it too. Since it's a lifestyle, there's a lot about witchcraft that I just stare wide-eyed at, so I'll just start with the basics and then... go from there. I do have a couple of friends who practice, so I guess I can bother them. XD

This is a really great video! Definitely one of the best “intro to witchcraft” videos I’ve seen. You make witchcraft very accessible, and really show that there can be something for everyone. Plus , even though I’ve been practicing for a few years, it was a wonderful reminder of why I love the craft so much 💜 As usual, absolutely beautiful cinematography 😊

Thank you for this video, it's very helpful. I learned a lot of 'incorrect' witchcraft when I was younger, because the teenage coven I was brought into (of which I was the youngest by a large amount) had no idea what we were doing and mixed incomplete information with making things up. I've recently taken an interest in unlearning what I thought I knew to relearn a healthier way of seeing and doing things.

I love your background 😍 this old wall is so cool!! Is it a real old one or did you build it to look like vintage? And the lighting is so cozy 🥰 I enjoyed this video a lot 💚 It must have been a lot of work, I mean a 10 minutes video takes a lot of time (for me at least 🙈🤣), but 30 min 😱 holy moly, my full respect for your commitment!! How long did it take you to edit?
@Thewitchescookery
@Thewitchescookery 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is actually the old wall of the house - it should be a couple of hundred years old 😄 but therefor it is also not super isolated or anything 💁🏻‍♀️ and it has all black spots because it is the part under the roof where they used to smoke sausages. and yeeees hehe thank you for noting that - because it took a bazillion years to make this video. The talking alone was about 2 hours until I finally said everything more or less grammatically correct and let's not even talk about the editing 😂 that's why I left the last few seconds at the end in hahah

Thank you so much! I've been practicing since I was a kid. I'm great with energy work and have always been able to just sort of know what to do. Witchiness is hereditary for me. In recent years though I have been doubting my witchy abilities because I don't have an alter or crystals and don't do rituals with the moon everytime it changes. Thank you for helping me feel better and to realize that I'm just as much of a witch as I ever was. My goal is to take the journey more seriously now 💙💙
