| LYRICS |
Baby, you were always gonna be the one
You only ever did it just for fun
But you run to paradise
Jenny, I'll meet you at the grocery store
You don't need a friend when you can score
You run to paradise
Johnny
We were always best of friends
Stick together and defend
But you run to paradise
And Mamma, now don't you worry 'bout me anymore
And I see you crying at the door
When I run to paradise
That's right, they had it all worked out
You were young and blonde and you could never do wrong
That's right, they were so surprised
You opened their eyes up
(Opened their eyes up)
Opened their eyes up
You don't want anyone (You don't, you don't, open your eyes up)
You don't want anyone (You don't, your no fool)
Don't tell me, this is paradise (Open your eyes up)
You don't want anyone (You don't, open your eyes up)
You don't want anyone (You don't, your no fool)
Don't tell me, this is paradise
Good times, why'd I let them slip away
Why'd I let them slip away
'Cause I lived in paradise
Run to paradise
Run to paradise
Run to paradise
Jesus say's it's gonna be alright
He's gonna pat my back so I can walk in the light
(That's right!)
You don't mind if I abuse myself
So I can hold my head up (Hold my head up)
Hold my head up
You don't want anyone (You don't, hold your head up)
You don't want anyone (You don't, your no fool)
Don't tell me, this is paradise (Open your eyes up)
You don't need anyone
You don't need anyone (You don't)
You'll tell me, this is paradise
You don't want anyone (You don't, hold your head up)
You don't want anyone (You don't, your no fool)
You'll tell me, this is paradise (Open your eyes up)
You don't need anyone
You don't want anyone, (You don't)
You'll tell me, this is paradise

IKR? I am seriously obsessed with watching people from other countries react to the last 50 years of Australian music and the overall feeling, after being delighted at how much they ALL love our stuff from the 70s to the present day, is sadness that A) people from all over the world never got to hear our amazing music, and B) that so many of our amazing artists never "made it" beyond our shores where the BIG money is to be made.

It was on the radio in Germany when I was there in 1999. Did I sing at the top of my lungs? Yes, yes I did. Did the rest of my school group? Yes, yes they did too. Did we find any other Aussies? Sadly, no. But, to be fair, we were in a small village in Bavaria; I think we'd have had more luck in Berlin. Side note: the music that the local Bavarian TV station uses for their weather segments/ads? Crowded Houses "Weather with You". And we got woken up in a east Berlin hostel with another classic Aussie song, can't think of which one right now, on the radio.

Australian music 70s and 80s was just sublime. A golden era. Small enough industry to need people to work hard, be versatile, tour, play the pubs etc, but big enough to have energy too.

“It’s not specifically about heroin,” Gable says. “It’s more about misspent youth, the waste I saw in the ’70s on the northern beaches of Sydney. It’s more about being on the dole, surfing instead of working, smoking dope and drinking, people getting trashed in pubs on the weekend.” Played all the time in NZ too. Not a really a "happy" song but played with such energy.

These guys originated near where I grew up in the late70s 80s. Saw them a few times at pubs along Sydney northern beaches. This particular song is about the lead singer Mark seeing a girl he fancied while working as a window dresser!! at Warringah Mall (all northern beach-ites will be familiar). She worked in Woolworths or Safeways supermarket whatever. Eventually he came up with the courage to speak to her and ask her out. She just told him to piss off. We saw them a couple of years ago at Cremorne (yes they are still around) where he told that story.

I'm ashamed to admit it but this was me 35 years ago and my supposed mates of convenience in Wollongong's northern surfer days. It wasn't long before my paradise was not in the surf but came from behind closed doors to be found behind a closed world. I was heading for a new paradise delivered from a sharp steel in my arm like so many before me. Thank fluck I still had thoughts of my true paradise I knew from when I first stood up on a surfboard as a cheeky little surf grommet. One day I just got in my trashed Kingswood and instead of driving to see the paradise man I drove up Macquarie Pass and didn't stop until I got to Adelaide where I soon fell into an apprenticeship and the unnatural paradise was left 1200k's away. I was back surfing almost every arvo after work, surfing York Peninsula weekends before discovering the true paradise I almost never knew. That was the freedom to have a guaranteed job with my trade in whatever off the map surf destination I wanted for however long I wanted before moving on to the next paradise. I'm in my fifties, back in the northern Gong living with the surf behind my back fence where I grew up as a surf grommet terrorising the neighbourhood on my mini bike if I wasn't down the point ducking behind the boat sheds for a fag before jumping off the rocks straight into the impact zone to prove my worthiness of being a point grom, and and the only one still alive of all my mates I went to school and surfed with.

Grew up in a Housing Commission area north of Melbourne and I have lost count of how many people I knew who lost their way and found that same sharp steel you mentioned and who are no longer with us. Went to many of the same parties as them but just knew that life wasn't for me so fortunately I am still here. Now in my late 50's and really miss the 80's and the great music that we could see every night of the week for less than $5 entry fee. The kids today have no idea what they missed out on.

The lead singer, Mark Gable lives on the Central Coast of NSW, where i live and he still tours, both solo and with Choirboys. He's also big into photography and sells some of his work. He and his wife recently rewrote this song as a parody during COVID and called it "Stuck in Paradise". Its well worth a look.

Awesome! Another band I worked with. I once set up the crowd barrier at a Jimmy Barnes gig at a Rugby field. A large crowd at that gig. The field had only one road in so the cops put a breath test station on it after the concert. This made leaving take hours in a crawl where they tested every car. The next week was the Choirboys gig which went ahead but almost nobody came because of the complete chaos the week before. I felt so sorry for the Band. I know my boss got paid before the gigs but many of the other bands and workers may have missed out.

I love ur hair Suzi (soz if i spelt ur name wrong) i absolutely love the colours, no matter what colours u have in it. Also the song is about heroin. Aussie pub rock to us Aussie's is the best genre of music probs coz it's our own unique genre no other country has. We had some fantastic pub rock bands like ACCA DACCA (AC/DC, we call them Acca Dacca in Straya, we nickname absolutely everything lol) & INXS to name at least 2 international super groups from Straya that started off in the pub rock scene. The world (mainly the US) was never interested in our bands, whether they didn't think us Aussie's could perform musically or just didn't understand our genre but our bands are loved & adored by us Aussie's & being successful in ur own country, esp a country like ours means more then to break thru internationally 💞💞💞

FINALLY!! Someone reacts to this classic! Run to Paradise is my all-time favorite "belting it out at top volume while driving" song.😂 Other drivers probably have a good laugh at me, and most people here in the US don't even know the song, but you can't beat this for yelling your lungs out on the highway.😁💕 PS: React to a massive '80s hit from NZ called "Rain" by Dragon. It was huge in Australasia & South America, and it's another of these awesome "sing-along" pub/stadium songs. Entire rooms full of people will start singing when it comes on.😁🌸

I remember seeing them as support for Deep Purple in about 1984/85 and the singer had a broken leg or something and had to sing from a chair. They had a hit at the time called Never Gonna Die which I had the single for. They were great but Purple turned the speakers up to11 when they came on and was twice as loud and I was deaf for a week after. This was my song circa 87, had the black and blue singlet and wore it everywhere. Great song choice.

One of the great 'don't take drugs' songs to come out of Australia in the 80s. Just watch any doco on what was happening in the country and you will understand the message behind the song!

Lyrics Baby, you were always gonna be the one You only ever did it just for fun But you run to paradise Jenny, I'll meet you at the grocery store You don't need a friend when you can score You run to paradise Johnny, we were always best of friends Stick together and defend But you run to paradise And Mamma, now don't you worry bout me anymore And I see you crying at the door When I run to paradise That's right, they had it all worked out You were young and blonde and you could never do wrong That's right, they were so surprised Opened their eyes up (Opened their eyes up) Opened their eyes up You don't want anyone You don't want anyone Don't tell me, this is paradise (Open your eyes up) You don't want anyone You don't want anyone Don't tell me, this is paradise Good times, why'd I let 'em slip away Why'd I let them slip away 'Cause I lived in paradise Run to paradise Run to paradise Run to paradise Jesus says it's gonna be alright He's gonna pat my back So I can walk in the light (that's right) You don't mind if I abuse myself So I can hold my head up (Hold my head up) Hold my head up You don't want anyone You don't want anyone Don't tell me, this is paradise (Open your eyes up) You don't need anyone You don't need anyone You'll tell me, this is paradise You don't want anyone You don't want anyone Don't tell me, this is paradise You don't need anyone You don't want anyone You'll tell me, this is paradise Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Mark Gable / Brad Carr Run To Paradise lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Pty. It was the first song (Vinyl/record) that I ever used when I was 4 in the 80's. I had the Choirboys on vinyl, Deff Leopard Hysteria on Cassette tape and Michael Jackson Bad album on CD. I feel privileged of being alive at a time where all 3 existed.

I was born in 77 so I was far too young for the Aussie music pub scene of the 80s and early 90s. So any of my fellow Aussie's who went to regular pubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane during that era and got to see Cold Chisel, Noiseworks, Choir Boys etc at places like Coogee Bay Hotel or Selina's damn you were spoilt. Those were in my opinion the best times for live Australian music

Mark Gable is such an awesome guy, I had the privy of him taking my pics for my birthday portfolio last year and the funny thing was I didn't recognize him straight away. Was wondering why my friend kept laughing at me and he was throwing her knowing looks lol. Very talented photographer tho and singer!!! 😁

I love watching you guys react to Australian bands, they always seem to tweak interesting reactions and surprise people from overseas. I guess it's because we have a different flavour that most of the world hasn't heard. You oughta try out the radiators, one of the most classic Aussie pub bands ever. Try coming home to start with, then summer holiday and Nancy can't dance, all just some of the favourites.

An aussie anthem sewn into the dna... A Western Australian nightclub I worked at hosted them in the 90s or early 00s - they lifted the roof off the place, & played this twice! Everyone knew the lyrics. Me and the other glassies, did bugger-all work during the sets... ✌😄
