If this song doesn't convince you that Alex Lifeson is one of the top 5 guitarists in the world, nothing will. The tone, the technical work, everything is spot on. The tightness within Rush is just incredible.

This song is 43 years old. They were so far ahead of their time, there are still very few bands that could replicate this song live today. Nice to hear you commenting on Alex as he was often unjustly overlooked next to Geddy and Neil.

Ever see their movie? There's a scene in a diner where the waitress recognizes Geddy and asks for his autograph. She has no clue who Alex is. Alex's response is hilarious. Rush was reliant on each member. Take one away, the band could exist no longer. Didn't matter who.

This is actually a live version and not a fake with the studio track (which is different if you listen to it) in the background. Amazing talent.

Indeed, it was a live recording. The studio version featured an acoustic guitar for the intro, not the electric.

They tried to get the album track in one take but were not satisfied with any of them. They ended up splicing together several. IMHO the only live version that comes close to matching the pace and perfection of the album track is from Exit...Stage Left, plus it has some added vocals by Geddy.

Paul Scheuer the version from A Show of Hands is very good. The Lerxst in Wonderland solo is glorious on that one, and there’s one point where Alex hits a pinch harmonic while crouched down waving the neck of his guitar at the audience and dancing around like the goofball he is. By that era, they were so in the pocket with this song that they were having more fun than the audience.

Not everyone realizes that Alex is playing foot pedals also, in the long Intro you can see him staring at the floor and moving with the synthetic parts as he plays them with his feet while Geddy is on the keys with other parts.

Saw them twice. In 75 when they were opening for Kiss and in 77 as a headliner with Mark Farner and Cheap Trick warming up. I do regret not having seen them more recently than that though.

When I was in high school, I had friends who were drummers and they would boast all the time about learning to play new songs from Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc., but the inevitable question that always came up was 'Yes, but can you play La Villa Strangiato?', that told me everything about who actual drummers thought was the greatest. RIP Neil.

Not a bad sound and sound from what was coming out of Canada 🇨🇦 in the late 70’s. (1978) These cats were ahead of their time and were about 25 at the time of this. Listen to Free will for a solo where each member breaks out solo and the join back up. The crowd goes nuts always! Check it!

Were you guys wondering who is playing the synthesizer while Alex and Geddy were playing? They both were playing synthesizer / midi pedals. Even while Geddy what is playing the synthesizer, Alex what is doing the guitar and some synthesizer Parts with pedals.

Probably the most technically challenging track Rush ever did. Masterful stuff and remember, they were only in early 20s when they recorded it. Incredible. If you can play La Villa Strangiato then respect to you.

@@MrToband My favorite album. My buddy bought this and didn't like it upon our first listen. He gave it to me and I took it home and still have it today. I played this album unmercifully until CD's came out. Solid case of the first one is free and I've been hooked my whole life without regret.

I seen RUSH 6 times in concert ! These guys are SOOOOO damn talented !! They take on a epic ride and never let you down !! You can feel every note and beat right in the middle of your chest !! Just unbelievable Talent !! So sad to know that they will never grace the stage again ! R.I.P. Neil You are truly missed !! Thanks for the memories !!

Just 3 guys live and handling all those instruments while playing a long complex song, and nailing it. Back in the 70's and very early 80's Rush was the super group. They were like Zeppelin, Floyd, and Yes fused together yet like Maiden, Metallica, and Queensryche fused together before those bands ever existed, and again more complex and just 3 guys.

RIP Neil Peart, an extraordinary drummer January 2018, bandmate Alex Lifeson confirmed that Rush was retiring due to Peart's health issues. During his last years Peart lived in Santa Monica, California with his wife, Carrie Nuttall, and daughter. After a three and a half year illness, Peart died of glioblastoma on January 7, 2020, at age 67.

The 2 minutes starting at around 5:50 are so astoundingly beautiful in both their conception and in Alex's playing that it defies description. My favorite 2 minutes in all of music, regardless of genre. Your reactions are awesome. Keep up the good work and thanks for some love for Alex, one of THREE virtuosos in that band. (RIP, Neil)

I remember when this came out on record and I was at the record store the first day. You are witnessing rock history as we knew it back then! 3 people!! 3 !!!! And its still influential and Timeless! One of the greatest pleasures of my life was seeing this played live. Alex absolutely pours his soul into playing this one. He brings out so much emotion in every note. He truly does know everything that guitar can do. Not many guitarists play with dynamics like he does. That middle solo is just hauntingly beautiful. You hear it also in 2112 when the man is picking up the guitar and learning to play it. He starts out halting, uncertain, and slowly builds in confidence and the strumming becomes more regular and then more rhythmic.

For a few of their songs, they did "live studio" recordings. It wasn't played before a live audience, but it wasn't a pre-recorded studio song dubbed onto a video, like a lot of music videos are. This is one of them. It's what you would have heard in concert. This song was ALWAYS awesome in concert.

Rush is an Enigma.......an island unto themselves .....(that they made themselves )taking a lil from every decade that they performed in ...(like some reggae in the Signals &Moving Pictures albums) ....but they always remained true to themselves .....its funny seeing people hearing them for the first time ....Rush is one of many bands (steely dan/Journey/van halen/earth wind & fire /Santana /Boston/led Zep/ etc etc that was the soundtrack to me & my Familys life ........and I'm from Guam ....R.I.P. Professor....

Everytime I hear this song , it reminds me of a space journey on a starship ........ as Rush was St Catherines , Ontario , Canada band which is close to Niagara Falls and they played the Toronto bar music scene when they first started . I seen them once and seen Max Webster / BB Gabor /Goddo for a New Years eve party at Maple Leaf Gardens and Geddy Lee was the special guest for the song Battle Scar as Kim Mitchell was the lead singer of Max Webster .....a song that Geddy and Kim did together ...... fond memories of a lot great Canadian bands performing on the Toronto music scene of the 70s/80s

Here's an interesting factoid for you. Rush swore they would never write and record another tune the way they did this one. This was actually an epic long jam that they chopped into pieces and slapped it together, then in order to play it live they had to go back through it and learn what they did from scratch. Needless to say it was very time consuming. I recall one of them saying " that was the real nightmare."

Sorry but that isn’t true. The version that ended up on Hemispheres was a combination of 3 different takes. It took them months afterwards to figure out how to play what they put on the album. And if you know the album cut well, you will hear a number of differences in the version from this video. Alex changed his solos quite a bit while he was figuring out what he wanted to represent. It took them until the 80s to get truly comfortable with the song.

I especially love this song because it really showcases Alex. I've always felt like he's overshadowed by Neil and Geddy. He's 1a with David Gilmour 1b for my favorite guitarist. There may be other guys that are faster or more technical but I can feel Alex and Dave playing in my soul.

Alex is pretty damned fast and highly technical. He always played in a fairly traditional style that relied on harmonics, pinches, slides, bends, swells, and later, tremolo dives. He never got into some of the more modern-era play techniques like tapping or sweep picking. His focus was always on showcasing the song, not his personal performance, so people overlook the highlights of what he played over a 40-year career. But when he was out front on solos, he was always one of the masters of the universe.

Believe it or not, they rarely performed this live because it took many takes to get the studio version right and doing live was very hard. Over time, they obviously overcame that, but it does take a lot of effort to do this song.

It wasn’t rare for the, to play this tune live. I saw them live on every tour since Permanent Waves, meaning this was a fairly new song at that time and they played it at that concert. They also played A Villa Strangiato at 90% of every show I saw since. It is one of their most famous instrumentals and always gets a huge crowd response whenever they play it. Alex often improvised a lot of new stuff in the first solo of the song, it was always phenomenal and stunned the crowd. Rush did struggle to first record this song, having to do three different sections and kind of splice it all together, but they eventually mastered it and played it on nearly every tour. It was always done more towards the end of the concert, in the third act I guess you could say (the last 3rd of the night). From Vapor Trail on, Rush didn’t have an opening act anymore, but instead were the only act for a three hour show with just a short intermission for Neil to rest. Three hours of Rush was always incredible and even after three hours, they left you wanting more because even in three hours, they couldn’t scratch their catalog of music. There was always some other song you wished they played.

Yes they did! I was blessed to get to see them on three different tours and they just got better and better. There has never been or ever will be a trio with that kind of musical talent in rock again.

Rush's career, has lifeson playing incredible parts, another great sobe is freewill, the lead/solo on limelight catches the mood on the song, another good one is lock and key from hold your fire

The Drummer for Rush Neil Peart wouldn't do a "video" to air drumming to fake play, so the band recorded this live at Massy Hall in Toronto to an empty auditorium. They did it in ONE TAKE.

The music represents the different stages before falling into rem sleep and eventually dreaming. The nightmare is not really a nightmare think cartoon characters representing monsters. Peart wanted the monster section to sound like "big band style", thus the jazz influence riffing and fills. Lifeson's solo during this section, sounds like horns to me. I read Lifeson would always talk about his dreams and Geddy and Neil found it funny, hence the monster section sounds cartoonish. Anyway nice reaction, and I glad you are exploring one of the great power trio this planet has ever produced.
