In this video we work on the next step in converting a mud bottoms catfish pond into a sparkling clear mountain stream water for trout. We add over 10,000 rocks over top of geotextile fabric and sink a 10 ft, 21 diameter grain bin to the bottom of the original muddy trout pond to create crystal clear trout waters. Thanks to Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops and Princess Auto for your help in making this video!
Complete NEW fish pond playlist: • Building a NEW FISH PO...
The first fish pond transformation video: • STUNNING NEW FISH POND...
Unfortunately my pond in Northern Ontario is adjacent a swamp that is filled with muck and clay soil which makes a total mess for a trout pond, but we are doing something to fix this.
The pond trout are coming belly up and dying for some unknown reason. I spend the day trying to figure out why all the pond fish are dying. I test the water temperature, make sure the fish are getting food and oxygen, and check the water clarity.
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.

Do some research on flocculants and flocculation. Flocculation is a chemical process that makes fines suspended in water clump together so they settle out of the water column. I did a quick search before I posted this and there are flocculants that can be used in ponds. I'm in California so I stopped there because you'll have different brands and supplies in Canada.

Ya'll have definitely got your hands full digging that pond out, especially by hand. A bottom of bedrock will definitely help keep it clean, but silting will remain a problem for awhile. Kudos for braving the cold, ice, and snow to get this project done for spring! Love what ya'll are doing ❤️

Just be careful diving! Hitting that grain bin will sting! Great work. Like the idea of a floating raft. It's always good to offer some shade. Hope you have lots of shrubs and trees to help hold the soil back. Still might need some filtration for the fish crap and uneaten fish food. Shout out to Kevin and Don for donating a month of muscle! I'll be waiting for all the pond updates!

I think you better put in some wall anchors drilled through bin and screwed into side wall of soil to keep it from caving in kinda like they do with bowing basement walls or put some poles on inside in a cross pattern to hold it. That’s a lot of work you’ve done I’d hate to see it all cave in and have to start over.

Id assume you guys may know already, but in case you dont, the bottom of that new addition may be a great place for a Active Gravel Bog Filter. Im not an expert, but other pond builders use something very close to what you have, adding gravel which becomes a natural filter. Look into it if you arent familiar.

Silt will build up in any pond unless you vacuum or filter it out. They have pond vacuums to suck out the leaves etc. may want to consider in fall putting a net over it during fall this will help alleviate all the leaves that rots at the bottom. You may know don’t crack ice in a pond, the percussions can kill fish, I realize you are still building just a fyi in case you didn’t know. Helpful to leave a deicer (leaves a hole in the ice for gasses to escape from the rotting leaves etc. flowing water helps as well, possibly salt water in jugs which won’t freeze when moved around will keep areas open. Can do research to figure that out. Don’t plant vegetation around the edges it can take over. Preferably put free floating plants submersible that will suck up nitrates as food, co2 as it’s air then releases oxygen back in the water. Can put your submersible plants in pots that help keep it in control. Don’t forget to fertilize the pond will keep it clear and keep the algae under control or hook up a UV light in the waterfall which clears the water of algae as it runs through it. Make sure you have a run off that won’t ruin your sides if it overflows.

Hey brother, excellent work! I landscaped for 20 plus years. I also have a degree in natural resources here in the state's. It may benefit you to use pea gravel and sand to fill those spots. Which will add too the habitat. Als, look into insects, not sore what is included in your area... perhaps Periwinckles... anyways, I do know trout naturally eat bugs. Love your channel.
