I'm from not too far from there. It's amazing the 18th century history of the area, Fort Duquesne, Fort Necessity, Fort Steuben, Yellow Creek Massacre, Fort Henry, Whiskey Rebellion. The area is so rich with 18th century history and amazing stories.

@@TheWoodlandEscape I remember being taken to these places by my grandparents 35-40 years ago. I don't think I really had a full appreciation of this history and the significance for our country until I was much older. Those guys during that time period put it all on the line and risked everything.

Fantastic living history. Getting down and dirty in the country and living life as it was ? The equipment weapons and day to day living. A true experience away from the modern polluted world. Although harsh I am sure you must all feel enriched by the experience. Many thanks for sharing.

Great overview of Pricketts Fort. Spent many good times there with friend's in camp, on the trail and "friends around the hearth." It was good to see Larry at the end still striking up a tune on the fiddle, miss ya brother. From here in The Tennessee country, Lee "Scout" Wolfe Yes, I'm still alive!

Hello Peter. Fellow Canadian woodsman here. Great info, not many historical Reenactors here in the land of the Nipissings, I and another gent are slowly building our persona up here and have trouble finding good resources in which to build on. Thanks for sharing the links. We enjoy the era of when "Fur was King" and birch bark canoes traveled the rivers and lakes.

Of course if you follow golf you can see my weather by watching the Masters. It's not so nice today! I thank you for promoting some fellow enthusiasts. @@TheWoodlandEscape We have had a LOT of rain and high winds. No trees have fallen around the home but one snapped behind the house. A big pine the 20 inch bar doesn't cut all the way through. More wood for the fire!

Fascinating. Must have been a real eye opener to many. When the members (yourselves included) decide to adopt an era you sure go the whole hog and events like this highlight any deficiencies in interpretation which can then be rectified. What it makes me realise is that if the pioneers put up with these hardships you highlight, some requiring them to 'fort up' to just survive, how bad were the conditions they left behind in Europe? Well, I guess they succeeded big time. Keep the stories & history coming - I'm slowly learning.

Europe was a horrible place in the 18th century but, most had to buy their passage by contracting into indentured service for 7 years, basically slavery. Once completed they headed to the frontier where there was free land.

This is one of the best videos you and Kathy have done, the history was fantastic as well as the fiddle. Never realized there was so many people into this. I will get up there one year soon. Having an ancestor who was a longhunter is very inspiring and has steered me into this lifestyle. It was great to see Alex there. I' ve been following him a couple years now and hope to see more of his excellent videos. This school sounds like quite an adventure and one I shouldn't miss. That was great! love those little cabins! I'm almost able to get my little trailer out of the woods! The snow is almost gone, so the driveway is almost passable. Then, I will load the trailer with all the tidbits of steel that I collected and make the trip to your place. I also now have weekends off again, which helps!

I often wonder if the people from those time periods would be as envious of the way we live as a lot of people think they would. I’m sure in some ways yes, but I don’t think nearly as much as is believed. Ten years ago I read a book of short stories by different authors about life in the Great Depression. I was surprised by some of the authors who said they would like to go back to those years, because as hard as those times were the quality of life was better than now. More surprising to me is, I can understand how they might feel that way. People helped each other thru, and out of the hard times because you could, as opposed to today where people feel entitled to what others have worked for.

I believe, Craig that was an era that people could rely on their Neighbour’s, where today most people don’t even know theirs. There has always been greed but, I don’t think it was as prevalent, people shared without hesitation for those that were lacking. Would they have wished for an easier life, I can’t help but think yes. Did they complain, mostly likely not if the roof didn’t leak, the woodshed was full and the food put down for the winter. We appreciate your interest in our step back in time endeavour.

Phew, I’m glad to hear you got along there. When I learned the fort was in the states, I was worried you would spend the whole time in the stockade for being a Britt! 😂. Looks like one hell of a trip. What a fort!! Just amazing. You mentioned how hardy the people were. Re-enactors may have an idea, but even so, I don’t think any of us can begin to imagine the difficulties, and how resilient our ancestors were. The natives were tough as hell too, of course, but they were here for thousands of years, and grew up in it, but the homesteaders came from far away, to a new place, to build from nothing, and often living far far away from anyone else, or any help, and many with the very real threat of being attacked while working, no modern medicine, etc….. so so removed are we.

I fell in love with the time period growing up going to the pioneer festival in my hometown in Belvidere, IL. Now I get to be an interpreter at our scout base in NM at Philmont in a mountain man camp, and teach scouts about tomahawks, muzzleloaders, and fur trapping and I couldn't be happier. One of the reenactors from my area passed away this year and his brother was selling some of his old gear, so I was able to get a chest of items to kickstart my collection. I'm excited to show it off this summer!

Reminds me of the fortified burghs in the so-called Dark Ages - the period of Norse invasions of Anglo-Saxon England. King Alfred organized villages and communities into fortified burghs - villages - where a small body of trained troops and ford - the militia - would occupy as a deterrent. They also would store sufficient food and water for the families and their livestock, bringing all their food and valuables into the burgh and leaving a barren territory for the Norse Vikings - no food or valuables to take, secured behind solid, defended walls doesn't inspire marauders to stay. Limited incentive to stay in the area. These fortified homesteads - something the Ulster Irish brought over from Ulster and Scotland, was also used in New England up through the American Revolution. Great video! Now I want to visit Prickett's Fort.

I'm Shure you have herd about Marry Engels that happened within a couple miles of where I grew up I herd about that time period my whole life WV has been full of turmoil since it's inception I guess and befor sorry for writing a book I hope you get back down here for lots of other events that represent our history I'm pretty proud of it

Love West Virginia ,I currently live in Rural South Central Indiana . Home town Cleveland Ohio Lost of folks moved to Cleveland Ohio from West Virginia looking for work and found it those days .In my 70s now Steel Mills Auto Industry and manufacturing.They made Cleveland there Home .

They used to have a Marry Engels day here down along the kanawha river close to the Ohio river and you could see all kinds of crafts and craftsmen down there

In my interview with Wade Davis, we are actually tucked in to one. They are pretty tiny … a bunk bed and a fireplace and that’s it. Quite similar to what they would have been like.

The young lady that made your buffalo cap is Emily Burns of Wool and Weeds. I traded for one a few years back and it does keep your head warm. A great hat to sleep in, in the cooler nights.

My 3 daughters are descendants of Timothy DeMonbreum, long hunter in the middle Tn. area, during the mid 1700s. This is on their maternal side. I was borne in South Indiana. Timothy was a French Canadian trapper that traveled to Tennessee ,and settled there. He was one of the first known European descended person in this area. Yes he was a long hunter.

Well 'EMPEROR Peter', here's another fine experience you've brought us into! Too bad 'EMPRESS Catherine' was not there to partake of. I am quite sure, this will tempt enough 2 make it a twosome next time. Not a bad job at all of framing and volume on this vid and I thank U both 4 the sharing of your time/talents with us. I can C a 'heartfelt' longing 4 a return 2 a 'time of reasoning', we have lost much of this ability. Though the times were harder to live through physically, a person was 'naturally free' to live life and not be coerced 4 profit. HMmmm, sounds a bit like trying to escape slavery eh? A freedom and a connectedness with both people and nature = healthy living. "Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much” - Helen Keller. Health and Blessed Easter! :)
