Irish broadcast legend and old pal Dave Fanning remembers his six-decade NME habit, the home-made instruments of Harry Partch, putting a ten bob deposit on Sgt Pepper (aged 10), 'An Evening With Wild Man Fischer', Irish pirate radio, Jonathan Richman, early Roxy Music, cassettes by the Cranberry-Saw-Us, U2 recording in Eamonn Andrews' studio and being 'the kind of DJ that plays Echo & The Bunnymen but not YMCA'.

Dave Fanning is a legend. Ireland’s John Peel even if he wasn’t 😄. He knew everything and everyone. He helped so many bands start their career. He introduced his listeners to everything from Dylan, the Beatles, Zeppelin and Bowie to random post-punk bands to the latest indie darlings. It was required listening growing up in the ‘90s. And he is truly a huge music fan himself. His enthusiasm is infectious. I have a memory of getting a lift from my mother and Dave playing two amazing songs on the radio. One was Cotton Mather’s “She’s Only Cool” and I forgot the second one. I bough Cotton Mather’s incredible album (“Kontiki”) and every time I hear that song I wonder what the other song was.

First came across Dave Fanning in the car park of Stillorgan shopping centre in early 1978. The gas company were sponsoring a display of fires etc on the back of a truck trailer and MR F was representing BigD radio who were broadcasting live from the back of said truck trailer. I was impressed by his pointed shoes ... He became a legend over the years and am still listening to music that he introduced me to. Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac still provokes a Pavlovian reaction within me ... Long may he run.

Mr Fanning's description of attempting to receive "Sounds Of The Seventies" on his radio reminds me of my attempts to pick up his RTE2 programme at midnight on weekdays from Dorset in 1979 and 1980.

Dave, you really would do the world of Irish music a great, great service indeed by doing something with / about all of those very special and in some cases uniquely important Fanning sessions from down the years - if it isn't going to be you, who's going to do / oversee / get behind it? Think about it, it could be your future legacy!

In the late 70's and early 80's Dave's radio programmes were a lifesaver. For many Irish listeners of a certain age he was our equivalent of Peel. Rock on, Daithi.

Hard to argue with Mr. Fanning regarding both the first Roxy Music album being the finest debut ever and Strawberry Fields being the finest single of all time! Fantastic show as usual gents! And Mr. Hepworth needs to get cracking on that "hair" book ... Oversprayed, Overgrown & Over The Ears (?)

Great stuff, wonderful to hear chat about Wild Man Fischer and Harry Partch on a Word podcast. And Roxy Music, excellent. Completely agree the first album didn't really need "Virginia Plain" and it's certainly not "a difficult listen". Also I'm pretty sure "Virginia Plain" and "Up The Junction" by Squeeze are the only two songs to share one big thing in common! Also a mention of Johnny Clarke - superb!

Lad's, as alway's a great podcast. Back in the mists of time our steam radio could hardly pick up Radio Luxemburg. We convinced dad to extend the aerial cable.Dad climbed out the bathroom window and stood on the window sill while my brother and I held onto his legs while the wire was attached to the fascia board.Eamonn Andrews, now thats a name from the past. When he left the B.B.C. in the summer of 1964 it was a major blow and I don't think the Beeb has ever recovered. His new show was the first entertainment talk show on the I.T. V. network. Sunday night 10 p.m. Not a Malcom Mugridge style talk show You could see new singers and groups on the show. The first musical group on the first show was Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders with " Um,Um,Um, Um,Um." Not long after that we saw Georgie Fame and The Blueflames. These podcasts are to much fun, it can't be good for us all. Cheers, Chris Perry.
