A year ago I took a brand new Carhartt and turned it into a waxed canvas/tin cloth jacket. After 365 days of use the question is would I do it again? This is the follow up and my answer to that question.

I just treated my first Carhartt jacket after retiring my first from 2015 of hard use without a wax finish. The biggest thing I have noticed from an unwaxed coat verses a waxed coat is that the waxed version is the ultimate dog hair collector. I have two Australian heeler. The waxed version sure does smell good and looks good even with a fur and wax treatment. Thanks for the video.

I just bought all the stuff to do this. My cousin said he had a wax treatment on his jacket before. And liked it. But once it started to get a little dirt and grime it would transfer it to furniture to his truck seat real bad. I’m still gonna try it out though. Maybe he didn’t keep his as clean. He does to a lot of shop work too.
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 8 ай бұрын
The dirt and grime would transfer to the seats or the wax mixture would transfer? I suppose if it was the dirt and grime it would transfer regardless of it being treated or not depending on how dirty the jacket was. I made sure to “push” the mixture into the fabric as deep as possible. This helped dirt and grime slide or fall right off because there wasn’t anything for it to cling to.

I don’t believe it would be difficult at all. If you’re concerned with mess just put some plastic or a drop cloth down on the table. @@TheHiddenHomestead I heard the microcrystaline wax gives off some really nasty fumes. But I also hear mixed info on that. Waxing makes it pretty unfeasible to wear in the summer, correct? It's one thing to have an unwashable jacket, but unwashable pants could get nasty fairly quickly if you sweat a lot.
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 4 ай бұрын
It’s not the wax that’s really flammable. It’s the tung oil finish and especially the mineral spirits. Yeah. If you sweat a lot they will get funky. AND your're not living with PFAS chems as I have with my many GoreTex products (backpacking gear) over the past 30+ years. That being said, GoreTex doesn't last forever, and the myriad ways of 'rejuvinating' it don't work that well. OTOH, taking a fairly (quite heavy) cotton/duck set of outer wear on a long back backing trip is not optimal. Keep in mind that you will lose that breathability once you oil/wax a heavy cotton/duck piece of gear. just some thoughts to add more complexity to our decision making process. :)

I believe a lot of that will eventually wear off. Because it’s mainly on the surface and not in the fabric. Did you use a heat gun to get it hot enough to run down into the fabric? Hello. With the exterior being waterproofed from the waxing, there's no reason why you couldn't turn it inside out and give the interior a good hand washing. Just rinse it thoroughly and let it hang dry. I watched a youtube video where stage actors spray Vodka on their clothes between performances which removes the musky/mouldy smell. It's supposed to absorb the odour molecules and then disappears when it dries. Considering the benefits, I'd say it's worth the effort.

@@not1au Hello. I've found that by placing my leather work boots in the oven on a low setting prior to applying a water proofing agent allows the leather to absorb the agent. I've never had a problem with dirt sticking to them. They appear as though they were conditioned from the factory. I've worked in all conditions from sand to mud. Just like anything else, eventually the boots will need to be cleaned and waterproofed again. Maybe once per year depending on how harsh the conditions are.

@@timhorton8085 The trick is to get only the fabric to absorb the wax and oils by treating the threads before they are woven together at the factory. After the threads are woven there should be square like voids in between the threads to allow microscopic water vapor to escape aka steam. When the pores are small enough do to a high thread-count raindrops and mist can't enter without pressure, but water vapor has no problem leaving 👍. This is exactly how modern synthetic waterproof breathable membranes work also as well as our own skin 👍.

Did this over the weekend and my jacket has a waxy feel to it. I'm a little paranoid it will rub off on the seats in my jeep. Is that waxy feel normal? Or did I do something wrong?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the waxy feel is normal. Did you melt and penetrate it well enough into the fibers? If so, it SHOULD be ok because it’s soaked in and not just setting on the surface. That’s my disclaimer. I can’t guarantee that it won’t rub off because I don’t know how much is on the surface of the jacket nor do I know if you have and keep the seat warmers on at the highest setting for long periods of time which could re melt a small portion of the wax. I suppose that is possible. I’ve personally not noticed any rubbing off onto my seats. However, I have nylon seat covers on all my trucks which of course aren’t as absorbent as cloth.
@michigan_masks8969
@michigan_masks8969 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHiddenHomestead I appreciate the response. I suppose it's safe to assume that it is possible for extra wax to come off if applied toothpick and or not melted I to the fibers well enough. Other than that, the process was very effective for repelling water during the absorption test on day 4 after application. Haven't had the chance to wear it out in the elements just yet, but I'm guessing it will function as it should. Also, I 100% agree with you about the stiffness of the clothing until its worn for a few minutes and softens up some. Anyway, great tutorial, thumbs up!

You can also do this on the cheap with four parts by weight of candle wax and one part of sunflower- or rapeseed-oil. It is also pretty nice to sew, for example to make a Waxed Canvas Tool Roll for Wrenches: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mreTet2rmbGYh5c.html I used a torn jeans and an old household sewing machine from the fifties to make it. It's pretty important that the wax-oil-mix be kept hot while brushing it onto the fabric, I always left it on the pot with hot water. When dealing with fabric for sewing, you can also put the canvas between two sheets of baking paper and use an iron to distribute the wax evenly.
