My Moms family hid a Canadian pilot in their barn until the under ground got him back to England. She got to meet him again in the 80s.

An awesome, humble tale of a regular guy (an American fighter pilot in Europe) who is shot down over Holland in 1944 and how he is rescued , sustained by farm folk, and smuggled out back to England...and the aftermath story of contacts years later with the wonderful Hollanders who had helped him escape. Heartwarming on an international scale!

Wow, thank you for sharing. Spoken with great recollection. I am the son of a wounded in action WW2 Tank Destroyer. My dad was a replacement after the Battle of the Bulge, breakthrough. My second wife is German and I've been to Holland many times. I was amazed by how many Stars and Stripes (+ Union Jack's and Maple Leafs)still proudly fly in front of places that are Dutch owned. I've been to the American Cemetary in Margraten and it's taken care of privately by families who adopt graves. There is actually a waiting list to do so, even 80 years later. Most people here speak English and rather well. I will say this from my own observations, the Dutch where worth fighting for and saving. No surprise to me, they risked their own lives for this brave pilot.

What a wonderful humble man. It amazes me the courage of ordinary civilians who aided strangers when death would be their only reward if discovered. A great story, well told. 👍

Veterans all say basically the same thing at the end; "War is horrible. There has to be a better way to solve our problems other than war." Very insightful advice from the ones who have seen it first hand.

Thank you for sharing his story and hopefully many more. My father was in the 8th Airforce and based in England too. He flew with a crew on a B-24 bomber. I only wish he could have told his story before he passed in 2017. He was 94. My brothers and I cherish our dads WWII stories and his love for this country.

Thank you for sharing your story. My father was also a airman based in England and was saved by the partisans for which I’ll be forever grateful.

It was incredibly dangerous for ordinary Dutch civilians to have hidden or aided Lieutenant Frolking in any way. At the least, the penalty would have been jail or a prison camp, if not execution. At the same time, he was really lucky as well. The Dutch Underground was badly compromised by double agents and many of its members were captured and executed.

What a great story. As a Dutchman I'm proud that the Dutch helped you to get back to the allied side. My aunt married a US soldier after the war and moved to the US.

My dad, a dutch citizen, joined the canadian forces and was involved in " the battle of the Scheldt". Obviously he survived the war and all his life he had great respect for all the Allied forces. Thanks Mr Frolking and the Van der Maas family for your courage and determination

This is an absolutely amazing story. God bless this American Hero and Aviator and to all those hero's in the Netherlands and beyond (both military and civilian) who risked their own lives to help him be repatriated to his homeland and family. One of the most amazing parts of the story was when he said that the three German Officer's were in the room directly below him sleeping for the night and then left the next morning having absolutely no idea an American downed aviator was in the room directly above them. Thanks for sharing this content. We tend to simplify wars to mere numbers (men, squads, casualties...), but each of those numbers was an individual with parents, a family, a past, fears, plans for the future. Listening to their personal stories is a much more human way to approach history and appreciate their sacrifice.

My fathers grandparents lived through the blitz, entire city blocks turned to rubble..My dads dad fought in North Africa and Italy in a tank…Only told me about his time there once when I was around 14. Guess he figured I was old enough to understand by then. My moms dad was in the US Navy and later on got pneumonia and was hospitalized and missed his ship leaving port….That ship was the USS Indianapolis. She was torpedoed and most of the crew were killed by sharks. He he hadn’t gotten sick My family might not have ever been born.

What not many people know is that German Parachute Regiment 6 (Fallschirmjager Regiment 6) was in the process of being ferried to N-Beveland and the Walcheren Causeway from Dintelsas and Zijpe at dusk on Oct.31. On Canadian orders a small Dutch Resistance Group was ordered to secure the ferry of Oud-Vossemeer just 7.4 Km SE of Dintelsas, but in doing so took the entire flooded Island of Tholen as well. Going around Tholen Island unnoticed in the ferry lane and close proximity of the Stavenisse pillbox complex which was occupied by 11 Dutch Resistance fighters would be impossible. Even during the night. Therefor the Germans Parachute Regiment 6 was ferried to Numandsdorp instead. So Mr.Frolking was very lucky. It took the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division 2 weeks to overcome the 150 meters to the railway dam at Volkerdorp (S-Beveland). Here is footage I took with my cellphone and that's why it is out of focus lot's of times. My father was a B-17 pilot (452nd bomb group 8th AAF) shot down on 3/6/44 - “Black Monday,” first daylight raid on Berlin. The Dutch Resistance (Comet Line) saved his life and made mine possible. I’m forever grateful to these brave souls. Great series, thank you!

My Father in law had a friend, who had the same experience, P51 pilot, who was shot down over Holland about the same time. HE WAS SHOOT DOWN BY A GERMAN JET, and His name was Donald Day. He made it to the ground safely and used the map He carried to walk about fifty Miles all at Night and sleep in the woods, and ate the produce in the farms He was walking thru. He made it to a safe house near the Ocean, and in three days He was back in England, but didn't fly again for the same reason this man wasn't able to do. He was also sent back to the Stares and became an instructor, in Texas, until the war ended, a few months later...After the war He went into Aerospace, where He met my Father in law.

My moms side of the family is Dutch and I was born there. Dutch people are grateful for the sacrifice the British, American, and Canadian forces made. The Dutch underground saved a lot of airmen and got them back to England.

"We had Mastery of the air" , Thanks to the RAF defeating the Luftwaffe in 1940 .. I watched a documentary about the battle of Britain I didn't realise we had 2 voluntary squadrons of American pilots , eagle squadrons. 2 years before USA officially entered WW2. .. Brave brave men who could've stayed at home in the USA. #respect 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Wonderful story! Thank you posting this. My Uncle and his childhood friend both enlisted and ended up flying Typhoons for the RAF 43/44. My Uncle was shot up twice...once he was able to do a dead stick landing at an allied airfield, the other was a wheels up landing in a field...both in France. After 132 combat missions he was shipped back home by the end of 1944...later to become a trainer for the RCAF and ferried aircraft in western Canada. His buddy faired slightly worse off after having to bail out from AA damage...he sustained burns and a broken leg. Although he was able to evade capture for a few days, he was finally taken prisoner briefly by a German squad only to find himself soon after in a fire fight with the Americans. He was able to slip away from his captors by crawling for a few days avoiding brush fires and a tank battle. He eventually got rescued by the American Army and repatriated back to England to recover from his injuries. Both men were re-united back in their home town by Christmas 1944. My Uncle's last flight logged was chasing down a Japanese balloon bomb with a fully armed Hawker Hurricane along the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. He never flew again after that.

Great True Story, Great Hero, 👍. I can't imagine what he went through, it's something to have to bail out of your aircraft not knowing where you will land and who's going to be waiting for you. Wonderful story about the courage of the Dutch Underground, and the Family that took him in and fed him and their relationship after the War.
