The Story...
Imagine going home to sleep, but you have no house. If you are lucky you might have a tent or maybe a piece of cardboard to lay on, where owning a blanket is a luxury.
You lay down freezing to death, your body shakes because you are cold and hungry. You couldn’t eat today because there was no place open to feed you. You wake up the next morning with your only goal to find some place warm and hoping for something to eat.
Sounds like the beginning of third world country story doesn’t it…
Welcome to Eagle Butte South Dakota. Population 1,350 people. A beacon of civilization that is one hundred miles from nowhere. Eagle Butte is located on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation and located in one of the poorest counties in the United States, right here in South Dakota. Unemployment is high and the number of people homeless in this community is staggering. People can go days without eating. With inadequate shelters, people find themselves sleeping outdoors in -20 degree weather during the cold winter months. Some have even died from exposure while sleeping.
Eagle Butte is one hundred miles from Pierre South Dakota, the closest place that represents a small city. Eagle Butte is 300 miles from the states major metropolitan city of Sioux Falls. Yet it serves as the center of the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. An area covering 4,000 square miles of northern great plains.
Our society looks anxiously over the distant horizon to help others in need half a world away. Yet we ignore people in our own backyard who every day go hungry or are looking for a safe place to sleep. In urban cities there are shelters, missions and homes supported by the larger community. In larger cities there are simply more resources available to the homeless and hungry than in rural areas.
People of all races find their way to Eagle Butte looking for food, shelter, hope and a community. Desperate for a sustainable way of life. Too often the outside world’s view of life on the reservation is clouded. We think the tribes are funded with an abundance of money from the federal government. Natives are given monthly checks to live one. Housing is free for those on the reservation. Life is grand right? That couldn’t be further from the truth
Unemployment runs 80% or higher. Many communities are without adequate water systems. It is common for multiple families to occupy a home built for four people. Desperate homeless people will make their way into boarded up and abandoned structures just to escape the cold frigid weather. Then there is the challenge of getting food boxes and health services to those shut in or with no transportation in outlaying communities.
Life in remote rural communities like Eagle Butte can be harsh.-
Yet there is hope, there is pride, there is help. The Mustard Seed is a non-profit organization that was started in an effort to feed the people and provide temporary shelter from the cold. Today the Mustard Seed feeds on average, over 150 people per meal with that total reaching over 250 per meal by months end. It is difficult to find fresh and healthy food to serve the people. They have to fight with other organizations to even get day old bread left over from a local fast food restaurant. Some days there just simply is no food to serve the people.
On the off days that the Mustard Seed is closed, the volunteers will buy loafs of bread and peanut butter, going around the community to make sure the people are fed.
Currently the Mustard Seed serves from an old phone building that is inadequate and not hospitable for serving food or housing people. We are looking to the future of designing and building a facility that will allow us to serve hot meals, provide a safe haven during the day and temporary housing for the homeless. The facility will also help to provide jobs and volunteer positions in the community.
The Mustard Seed relies on donations from the community and churches, yet those donation fall way short.
We have the opportunity to help those living in a what seems to be a third world country right here in the USA. With your support we can help not to enable, but to empower a community of people to serve themselves. Your support can help to feed the hungry and give temporary shelter to those families needing a roof over their head. Your continued support in the future will help us to build a shelter that will benefit the community for future generations.

I lived there when I was 11, ended up homeless for over a year. Being white and from normal American civilization, i was not prepared for what happened. This event changed my life, and this organisation "The Mustard Seed" saved me life, and I owe them more than they will ever even know. So thank you for being there.

What would be better; getting a sack lunch or the materials to create something to sell and from that sale and hundreds more; buy your own bread and fresh eggs and fresh meat. Growing up in central SD in the 70's and 80's I remember seeing pawn shop/liquor stores just outside some of the reservations borders. It's like someone wanted them to fail and was willing to profit from it. Such a sad third world situation. I've seen first hand how successful indigenous Americans can be when they get off these reservations and live their lives elsewhere. Easier said than done apparently since most never leave.

That not right there should be a program to pay for the housing electric and water for disabled Native Americans and low ncome people . It makes me very angry to know what the government did to the Native Americans people. Instead of helping and living in peace and letting the Native Americans thrive in culture and as American people of this country the government stole from them whatever they could get .The government should be helping these Native Americans people with government programs instead of letting them suffer as they are doing in Butte SD. These are great people with a strong culture and a history of stories . May the sun shine thru and bless you all with everything you need in life😊

You are so right about the outside world NOT really knowing about living on a Native American Reservation. I have volunteered at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for about 13 years. I also adopted a Lakota family the first year I visited. I send them food, birthday and Christmas gifts. I purchased school supplies for one school and gently used winter coats for another school. I would love to help "The Mustang Seed." Would like to know more about it!

Arlen Rabbithead...You don’t have to explain anything to Aimee Webber. She should try reading a history book - NO, read several! Then she’d have the answers to her questions. It’s her responsibility to educate herself. White people nearly decimated the indigenous people through disease and war; forced them off their land to be relocated to land that White people didn’t want; attempted to destroy their culture, language, and religion by rounding up their children and sending them to Christian “boarding schools” to be brainwashed. The list of atrocities committed against them for CENTURIES is long. And it hasn’t stopped. Many of the reservations are poor and have the highest rates of suicide, diabetes, domestic violence, alcoholism, and drug addiction in the United States. Indigenous people are dying of despair.. These are symptoms of deep trauma. Aimee Webber, do you understand what happens when a person suffers from physical and mental trauma and does not receive treatment? They pass it on to their children. It becomes a vicious cycle. Your solution - go plant a garden and raise cattle. Seriously? They don’t have money for food and housing. How can they afford farmland and cattle, much less one cow? It’s insane how you oversimplified the issue. Your comment reminds me of a common belief among white people that freed slaves could simply pull themselves up by their bootstraps, forgetting that it was illegal for slaves to be educated, to own land, to vote, to live in the same communities as white people.Yet, freed slaves were suppose to create a life for themselves out of thin air, after having nothing for over 300 years, in a system built by white people for white people. You act like people have the same resources and privilege as you.

Aimee, you are clearly out of touch with what REAL hardship, or struggle looks like AT ALL... ... A better way to implement your idea is this: People have to show up and TEACH the skills number 1.. number 2, so much of the land there is bad soil , hard to grow in and a lot of it has been contaminated by nearby heavy industry, drilling, fracking etc... In order for the Rez to become self sufficient with sustainable agriculture, sustainable buildings, kitchens full of food from a garden as well as canned and preserved garden harvest etcetc... it will take MANY LARGE ORGANIZED MOVEMENTS of good people who HAVE THOSE SKILLS (as well as skills in natural building) to COMMIT to spending AT LEAST TWO YEARS on the Rez, BRINGING MOST SUPPLIES WITH THEM implementing gardening programs, cooking classes, nutrition programs, how to dry and preserve foods from the garden, etc etc ..BUILDING HOMES, even if it's just a strawbale cabin with a wood stove.. ..working with the local people, equipping the younger folks and planting something, literally and metaphorically that lasts and continues to grow and be a source of help and food sovereignty for future generations that is ROOTED in their ancestral traditions... People go to camps to learn these types of wilderness skills, permaculture courses, natural building courses, etc etc etc Well, all the people who KNOW THAT STUFF need to BRING THE COURSES to the REZ and then STAY THERE LONG ENOUGH that they are able to TEACH the skills! And BE OF SERVICE! And ROUGH IT for the sake of the people who's land WE LIVE ON!!!! ... Something I feel passionate about doing in my lifetime.. Who's interested in joining me?

Europeans brought these disgusting cultural things to this land. Why should you be so ignorant when it’s your creation? We were a healthy, tall beautiful race until you rapists came to these lands.

No Greyhound lol You must have never been to a place as rural as EB. Plus, where will they go? This is people's home. I can't stand the logic that says, "just leave." Leave Hawaii because of volcanos, California because of earth quakes etc. as if there is some paradise out there. This is the home of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. People aren't just going to abandon their culture and family... for what? Winding up on the streets of New York City?

You’re German, one of our admirers thanks to that famous author Karl. We did that many times, we were met with imperial gun fire on our children. Like your people we fell from grace yet fought against empires. We were not given the opportunity like Germany, to rebuild.
