Fun Fact about the 77th Infantry Division that Desmond Doss was a part of: it wasn't filled with young men like most of the Military was as the time, but a bunch of older men because the higher ups needed data on how older men would perform in combat. They also famously had some of the most insane, borderline cruel training, so when they presumably beat the shit out of Doss, they *_definitely_* made it hurt, and the fact he didnt rat any of them out tells you a lot about who he is as a person.

I hate it when movies do that, like just tell the truth, they will take out something like that, but will add an entire bit of drama just because. You know what, now I get it, they don’t care, they just want money. And if it has something that they don’t believe, fuck it. Talking about filming as a whole. Best example, the Jeffrey Dahmer series on Netflix. Didn’t give a fuck about the story, just profit. Not surprised, I’ve been known this, just that shit really does piss me off.

Also, what is this, in my world it’s ten hours. Yes, I’d gladly sit around and watch a ten hour movie. I don’t think you get it, you’re the problem dude. There is so much left out of the movie as Mel Gibson said if we had put it all in nobody would believe a single word of any of it. He had tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ridge so he had to stiffle his coughing so as not not give away his location while finding injured soldiers he was diagnosed while in the V.A hospital and lost a lung to it. But that's not even half of it as he already was involved in two previous battles in the Pacific and was awarded the bronze star twice for the lives he saved in them the number of people he actually saved in the 3 battles he was involved in was closer to 300 men but he didn't want that on his medal of honour as not a prideful man he asked for just 50 to be shown but they settled on 75. He makes you want to be a better human being and his story is still taught to recruits to this day to show what one man is truly possible of doing if he really believes he can. There was a special ceremony held last year 2023 to represent this legend of a human being. May he rest in peace.

Doss saved 75 men over two days and nights. A lot of those men were in his platoon, the same men that beat him. 😮 Because of his extreme bravery many more people are alive today because of those 75 soldiers. Wives , children, grandchildren to say nothing of anyone that they have saved in their lifetime. Just think about it. ❤
@dominiquer156Ай бұрын
He saved 300+ men, he just didn't want to be considered boastful so he only wanted 50 shown on his medal but settled on 75 when his officers didn't agree

They never beat him.. that was made up for the movie. And 75 is what was agreed on, but can't be verified . Most of movie isn't real. What's real is he was a medic during war, like thousands of other medics. He also carried a firearm and shot. All that other stuff was created to make a good story.

I saw this towards the end of my military career. This is one heck of a movie. I understand his beliefs. As a Christian I never should have swore or pledged my life because the only one that I should ever do that for is the Lord. My Pastor, whose father was in the navy just as I was, he said he understood why I joined and that he and my ometown church never stopped supporting me and the choice to serve after we were attacked on 9/11. I am proud to say: I am a Christian I am the grandson of a soldier I am the son of a soldier I am a nephew of a soldier I am a cousin of soldier and marine I am a Sailor who is proud of his family and loves this country! Thank you to my family.

Because contentious objectors have never been treated well at the time of their war, even if they agree to an altered form of service like Doss like thousands of other Quaker servicemen who refused to engage in battle but ran the field kitchens, the back line field hospitals, drove ambulances, and (especially in WWI) took care of the animals.

It is always reassuring that ppl who are given mass destrzctiin weapons act like this and that it is seen as a way of being "one of us" to not kick out lunatics who act like that. In every military you find this kind of sadistic, babaric and completely useless behavior. And after they are done traumatizing each other at home, they get out into war. It is awful how "not snitching " is often romanticized in movies. Only full metal jacket has the balls to at least hint at what that dies to the psyche.

Says someone who has never been in any military or fought in any war. If you don't understand what goes into being a war-fighter, and to also be in real war, it's best not to insult them. Sit comfortably in your home and behind your keyboard while greaterer men than you or I will ever be, go out to fight snd die for the rest of us.

@@_DMNO_ Today, these “greaterer” men are fighting & dying purely for the interests of corporations and the ultra rich. Not for “freedom.” People like you are what enable this folly by romanticizing it. There’s no honour in travelling to some 3rd world country to topple governments and kill. And I certainly don’t co-sign it in my name or my “freedom.” Fighting a war just to fight a war does not make someone great.

I was in the military and there was an instance of a 'blanket party'. The offending person was gagged and held down while each member of the squad or platoon bunched them hit them or kicked them three times. If you did not participate you were next. If you tattled you were next again.

Full Metal Jacket had an example of a blanket party. They used socks with bars of soap in them to wallop poor Leonard Lawrence aka Gomer Pyle. That set him up for a brutal but slow and steady downfall. Watch the film to see how he ended up, darkest part by far.

Just a movie, just a scene But there are make or break moments like this…that will determine so much & holy hell what this man accomplished, the choices he made-where most-there’s just no way. But this all happened & more. Incredible individual Not “very many” seem to come around. I always try to remember that. So my daughter can understand it. This is different from “not speaking up about just anyone” beating you up. Anyway…it truly isn’t too late ever to find something or whatever that brings you peace or true joy But moments that define how difficult or how smooth things can be-I wish I could say they come more often than they really do Being around others that do great things-that’s THE difference Rest this man’s soul
