this film changed my life. sounds dramatic but it made me reshape my career path completely. Too many injustices in this world to let by.

jarad was sentenced to 200 years to life, hes granted parole at age 46. juan gets tried as an adult and is granted parole in 2026 if hes good. Antonio was realised during the film time, but was charged with 2 counts of burglary and is being tried as an adult. think about that and how life destroying it is instead of fighting over Steven .

I did 22 months in juvie from the ages of 15-17. I plead guilty to 11 felonies and 3 misdemeanors at 15. I am now ABD in a PhD program. I have zero college debt because I only accepted offers from schools that offered me a full tuition waiver AND a stipend (based on grades, GPA, letters of rec, GRE scores, and the fact that I went to research-oriented schools). That said, I am most certainly the exception; the extreme outlier (+2 SDs), if you will. The cold hard fact of the matter is, most of those boys WERE monsters. One kid I was locked up with is now doing time in a NC maximum security prison for raping and killing his cousin two years after his release. A Hmong kid killed his co-defendant that snitched on him when he was allowed to go on his first holiday overnight in the four years he had been there! He was transferred to another facility shortly after his arrest. And no, it wasn't because he got tried as an adult; he was only 12. You see, what I didn't say in the beginning was that the juvie I went to was affectionately known by the transport team as "summer camp". We were, essentially, the best behaved/lowest risk of the NC juvenile criminals. Oddly, it's also where female juveniles ended up as well. Trust me...you did NOT want to be a female in coed juvie. We didn't share living quarters or bathrooms, but a lot of the guys always found ways to "get to them".

This documentary broke my heart.

when i watched this already i feel so sorry to the victim and parents of jarad nava and juan ..i know theres no parents who wish that they child have in prison for a life time .. good movie that teach young people that you have to be a good person, strong and accept ur consequence .. never to late to be a good man. always pray and God bless ..love from philippines

This documentary portrays a lot in street life and the effects on young kids who could have been different if someone noticed. broken kids find that the only people who understands and is willing to be with them in the pit of brokenness is the family in gangs with standards to hold on to what they believe in. To be part of this family is to be like one, act like one and talk like one.
