You were spot on that this movie and especially Nimona, is a huge trans allegory. ND Stevenson wrote the comic before he came out, meanwhile the movie Nimona was produced when he was out for a few years and was sure of his identity. His storytelling reflects that. Comic Nimona is only hinted at to be genderqueer, but movie Nimona outright says they are just "Nimona" and can be what they wish to be. Comic Nimona also has an unhappy ending while movie Nimona has a hopeful ending :).

Did you see the look on Nimona's face when Ballister was fixing her leg. She isn't used to someone helping her at all.

38:17 I love that the round drawing at the top of the wall is Nimona as ND Stevenson drew her in the comics.

There were acutaly hints that Nimona would survive (but don´t worry, I didn´t catch them at first either). :-D Her form, when she took out the canon, was that of a phoenix. And what are phoenixes known for? Also, in the beginning she said that she and Ballister "would rise like a fiery phoenix from the ashes"... which is what happened. But I love this movie and loved your reaction.
