In this Film Courage video interview, Filmmaker/Comic Book Writer/Author Donald F. Glut, attempted to secure funding for his movies. He discovered that professional investors shied away from the high-risk movie industry, while potential backers often backed out at the last minute due to fear or external influences. Frustrated after a decade of trying, he eventually financed his own films by selling his comic book collection.
Donald F. Glut has been active in both the entertainment and publishing industries since 1966. Don has had a long and varied career. He has been a professional musician, actor, film director, executive producer, photographer, magazine editor, proofreader and (very briefly, for an advertising agency) copywriter, but is mostly known for his long career as a freelance writer. He has written and directed feature-length motion pictures, documentaries and music videos, authored approximately 80 fiction and non-fiction published books, myriad TV scripts (live action and animation shows, network and syndicated), comic-book scripts, short stories, magazine articles, even music and theatre. He has been involved with numerous popular franchises such as Star Wars, The Monkees, Tarzan, Spider-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Vampirella, Masters of the Universe, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest and many others, and created original comic-book characters for Gold Key, Marvel and DC. Arguably Don is best known for his novelization of the second "Star Wars" movie The Empire Strikes Back (#1 Best Seller). Don currently executive-produces, writes and directs "traditional-style" horror for his company Pecosborn Productions, and writes scripts for The Creeps horror comics magazine. Also, he is a Southern California representative of Las Vegas Talent Agency. Note: Any motion picture titles that may be listed prior to Dinosaur Valley Girls (1997) are of amateur movies, the first of 41 of which Don Glut made when he was nine years old.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Did you give up on the hope to find an investor for your film and self-finance? If so, what happened?

@@martydmc12 Why raise capital? The only money I shell out for anyone but me is for travel and food, unless I shoot locally, in which case there are no such expenses. If someone cannot come up with five grand for their hobby, they should worry about replacing their car's transmission when it dies.

Here's my takeaway from this: if you can fund your own project, go ahead and do it. This way, if your film makes money, you dont owe anyone. If it loses money, you don't have to answer to anyone.

Consider the source. "They" want to give money to filmmakers they're confident will make them more money. Have a look at Glut's body of work and tell me whether those titles from the 90s and consider whether they seem like financially sure bets.

They don't want to "give" money to anybody, now investing is a different story. I have made several feature films and won many prestigious awards. My films have been distributed in theaters nationwide and named the number six film of the year by "Siskel and Ebert". Large budgets are political, Friends and associates invest with their cohorts or those they are told to. You will not get millions if you are not part of the clique! Period! Unless somehow you can raise it yourself. Now here is the truth, if you can get your hands on 1 million dollars for a film, you get 10 million in credit through a major film company, (Cash is more valuable than credit).

I'm 74 and still writing and still seeking opportunities. IT is true that younger people do see older people as ' not in the game' UNLESS the writer/director is well known already. Play smart and learn from your mistakes.

You have some life experiences , something someone 50 years younger doesnt. Can anything you have gone through be used for a film?

@@vincentcrowley5196 Hey VC- yes one can add parts of ones life into the characters one uses for scripts and acting. I do write scripts - I don't add my 'character' into scripts yet but do add my experiences good and bad, and make them the script story or part of a script.

@@nickybjammin7629 I’m not an expert but I would imagine yes. I do know not just anybody can claim to be an actor and then expect to have representation. There are different ways to become a member. The only one one I can remember off the top of my head is to be the principal in an advertisement. In other words the “star” of the commercial.

@@xtntxex Unless you must have known stars to make your movie marketable, SAG is a waste of time and money. Plenty of talent out there who will work cheap if they are treated and fed well. I reject financial restrictions on making good movies.
