They never considered themselves disco. They cut these albums in Miami and were part of the Miami Sound. Disco was tossed out there by corporate executives for commercial purposes. They resented it and had every right to.

I was in primary school when these songs came out and remember many afternoons rollerskating to this and many other disco & musicals tunes in my friend’s garage 😆 - good times! My cousins were a few years older than me and one looked & dressed just like Barry, to this day he still has that vibe!

“Nights on Broadway” by BGs. My favorite. All filmed on Miami Beach. That’s where they all lived for many, many years. After Miami Beach, they moved to Key Biscayne. My husband interviewed Robin Gibb after their brother, Andy, passed.

Barry started writing their own songs since he was 9 years old. He remembers that the name of his first song was called Turtledove and he says he doesn’t remember the words. They started singing in public when Barry was 9 and Robin and Maurice were 6. They said they would stand in street corners and just sing. They went to a car race tract and asked if they could sing and they were told they could sing at halftime but they couldn’t pay them, but they didn’t care, they just wanted to sing to people. They did get money for singing because people would throw money at the race track they would pick it up. They said they got about $5.00 the first time, to them it was a lot at that age. Barry continued writing songs and eventually Robin started writing with him and then Maurice also joined them. Barry would write songs for other Australian artists and when he was 17 he won the best songwriter of the year. Barry’s dad said that another songwriter asked him how Barry being so young could write love songs that were so deep. The way they write is one of them gets an idea, and takes it to the others and they start building on it. They first write the music and then make the words fit into the music without deviating from the melody. They get to the point we’re the three can hear the complete song in their heads and then they go into the recording studio. None of the three know how to read or write music yet they were able to write 1000+ songs. Please react to You win again from 1987. Thank you.

John Travolta was only known for being on a sitcom. Saturday Night Fever made him a star when the movie became a sleeper hit, a cultural phenomenon, and gave him an Oscar nomination as best actor. The Bee Gees had been around for a long time and had platnum records already. Their music was one of the draws of the movie. In interviews they were always very clear that they did not look at what was popular in music, they wrote what they wanted to hear and were interested in doing new things, not what was already being done. One of them would come up with the beginning of a musical idea, and take it to the others. They would figure out the music, then start putting words to it. The inspiration could come from anywhere. Barry likes to use the example of a song that started because of the sound and rhythm the car made when they went over a certain bridge every day. They all agree that their songs that were used on Saturday Night Fever were not written for the movie, they were supposed to be for their next album. They were also not writing disco songs. They did not know what the movie was going to be about, or that they would be blamed for the popularity and explosion of Disco as a type of dance music. They never set out to write Disco music and if you listen to Disco records that came out afterwards, there are commonalities that the Bee Gees never used. They were vilified and made fun of for being too popular. It really bothered them and they stopped recording for a while and just wrote hits for other people and did other projects together and separately. Then they came back and made a bunch more albums. They really were incredibly talented.

Robin started the group and a lot of their early sons were solos by him, then when they sang Nights on Broadway, Barry discovered he could sing in ultra high falsetto and most of the songs after that featured Barry. Robin got pissed and quit for awhile but later returned to the group!!!

I love your reactions videos with the Bee Gee's. You are discovering something I have known since I was 11 or 12, I am 57 now. The 70"s are my favorite decade of music. They were HOT. They remained so good up through the decades into the 90"s. They were something special. The death of Maurice in 2003 ripped the wind out their sails for good then the death of Robin in 2012. From what I understand they could write songs together or individually and they'd be hits and for other people too. EXTREMELY talented men.

Songwriting... They liked echo, so staircases, public toilets, etc. Barry’s brain just hears music differently, and management encouraged him to listen to US radio stations to get in touch with what was happening in the US. They liked to write in the studio and record while the inspiration was fresh - this was mostly done in the 60’s. Some songs (and many of their hits) were said to be what Barry called “instant songs,” With the slightest inspiration, a song could be written in minutes - even as young as 15 or 16yo. JIVE TALKIN was inspired by the rhythm the tires made crossing a bridge every day on the way to and from the studio. Many in the studio with them in the 70’s said they warmed up with humor. Famed producer George Martin said during Sgt. Pepper sessions, they would be laughing and joking around, and then just snap to attention and sing when he was ready for them - very funny and super professional. He would say he have what he needed, but they would think they could do better, and would sing the entire song through again, all on 1 mic, which is only possible with true vocal talent. A band-member said they liked the high ceilinged entryway at the Miami mansion management had rented for the whole band because the sound bounced off the marble giving an echo. He said he stood around the corner out of sight. They would be joking and laughing doing an impromptu comedy routine, and the next thing you knew, a song would just come out of nowhere. Keyboardist Blue Weaver cures a couple of times that he was sitting alone trying to pick out something, and Barry cane in, said keep going, sat down and wrote a song - and gave him writing credits! He tears up when he talks about the beauty of being a part of a song being birthed... especially How Deep Is Your Love. By the 80’s, Barry had tape recorders handy to capture songs, most of which remained unfinished. There’s no one formula, but Barry recently said that he likes to write in a team. His 2 eldest sons were his team for his 2016 album called IN THE NOW, and there is a great interview about working together, and about songwriting in general. When asked in 1987 about their comeback hit, YOU WIN AGAIN, Barry said he heard a bit of it in his sleep, woke up, called Mo to make sure he was home, and recorded the stomp track in Mo’s home studio stomping on what they found laying around. Please react to it. You might also like to watch the video about the recording of TRAGEDY, where they talk about their writing and recording.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to. I see lots of they’s and them’s in my comment. If Barry was singled out by, for example, Blue Weaver, why would I change that to be all three of them? If Barry and Mo were known to live in Miami, and Robin primarily in England, and Barry was the one who said an idea cane to him in his sleep, and didn’t mention Robin as being present for the creation of the stomp track, should I have added Robin into the story? Again, there are plenty of theys and thems, so no one is left out. Feel free to suggest a specific correction to my comment, or add your own list of examples of how they wrote.

I wasn’t writing an all inclusive list, but responding to specific questions. For anyone who doesn’t know, when I said “they” or “them,” I was referring to the three brothers known as the Bee Gees, including your favorite, Robin. I don’tplay favorites. I’ve left many comments favorable of Robin. If you want something more said, then you will have to say it.

They were known to change up their sound and style... They had 5 new songs for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, plus 2 that would be released as covers by other artists. They made promo videos for their 3, but when management saw them, he told Barry to regrow his beard and shoot again. Night Fever was already out, so they just did new videos for Stayin Alive and How Deep Is Your Love. This and the other 2 videos without Barry’s iconic beard were stuck in the vault for years, then released after KZfaq videos became a thing. This was filmed to look like Vegas, but is actually outside of Miami. Thanks for reacting!
