Not even Steve is safe. Minecraft NFT play to earn server is no more..Or at least one of them, there are many people selling many different pieces of land and skins in minecraft servers for thousands of dollars. This one however sold out their stock of skins and then vanished a day later, only to return and tell people that they didn't mean to scam them. Classy.

@@Pikkabuu I'm like 99% convinced that the majority of these buyers are proxies working for rich investors that just seek out newly created cryptocurrencies and immediately invest set amounts of money on the off chance that one gets off the ground, because the people behind them can afford to just burn a couple million a day. These proxies then attract smaller legitimate investors, that who end up either carrying the crypto or sinking with it.

And he became a legend over night with all the ridicule becoming praises. In reality the gamestop short squeeze was stupid and was obviously a bad idea. But that was before people saw the results and flipped it around to be a genius play. So NFT and crypto are in a similar situation. People want to find the next undiscovered best thing (bitcoin, Apple stock, Amazon stock, GameStop stock, etc) , even if that new thing is a bad idea there may be a chance that people are wrong. I get the whole cynical end of times Cyberpunk esque BS but the reality is this is a scam happening on Microsofts' game, thus it makes sense for them to do something in response to it and for their customers to expect them to do something, regardless of any legal proceedings otherwise. It would be the same if this was some small indie studio run by one person. This is ignoring the fact that crypto is a relatively unregulated market, that's its appeal and why people put money into it (and trying to get rich quick), and now people are realizing just what that means.

Play-to-earn, or P2E, doesn't seem like a viable business model for games. My reasoning is that a P2E crypto currency's value is backed by the amount of money in the liquidity pool, but that crypto currency is produced by playing a game often with no cap. The only way for the crypto's value to increase or stay steady is if people are buying the currency produced by the game. Initially this doesn't seem like a huge issue considering mobile games and games as a service do a great job of encouraging players to buy things. The problem is that when you use the phrase "P2E", the audience that is attracted to it are people that are looking to make money, not buy things. So while a P2E game may look profitable early on as players pile in and drive up the price of NFTs used to produce the game's currency, it is unlikely that this same audience will use outside money to buy said currency to raise its value. This is also because many crypto games release way too early without any real reason for players to spend money other than to continue to increase the amount of currency they produce. Thus you have runaway inflation which will eventually snuff out a crypto game's only bright point, the money behind it.

Agreed. Maybe how in theory it works: MMOs tend to have 2 currencies - normal and premium. As time progresses people amass more normal currency and need more premium currency, de facto inflating the value of the premium currency. So it is all about the rate of inflation of the value of the premium currency? I think that is how this is supposed to work. Of course its based on an active playerbase that keeps getting more normal currency and needing more premium currency- and here often whales come in to buy the premium currency for advantage. *edit: so basically relying on a successful long term game (not common), that is has predatory enough monetization to not deter too many people, but also incentivize it (which is often done by slow creep of monetization- so TIME to build loyalty), and that attracts some whales. *NOT A FINANCIAL ADVISOR, NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE*

I suspect that Microsoft has a fairly loose relationship with most Minecraft content creators because most creators are not large-scale operations (ie, no threat) and they also continue to drive player interest in Microsoft's product. So normally this kind of character skins market is a bonus for them. But $1 million? Yeah, they likely care. This is where cease and desists (and other things) start flying. The problem is the speed. 12 days was probably not enough time for Microsoft to notice and act on it. Much less the minutes to hours it was actually active... Actually, maybe Microsoft is what happened. This sold out in 8 minutes. Microsoft sent their legal team at these guys. The NFT bros naturally threw up their hands and dipped because they didn't want to turn their new million over to Microsoft.

I really hope people would stop investing cash into projects where the people arent even giving out their real contact information. Its amazing how in real life no one would probably buy a house from a person who wants to hide his or her name but on internet this kind of behaviour doesnt seem suspect at all. Also how are most of these projects actually going to make money for the players. Just making a game isnt a guarantee that the game will be successful enough that the potential NFT´s will be sellable for a decent price for newer players. Especially if the game isnt able to lure in new players.

Have you looked into Phantom Galaxies? Looks like another indie game dev that pivoted into the blockchain market. Always worrying when the first thing you see is the paper and "connect your wallet" before you see actual screenshots.

My current MC Skin is something that one of the mods for a server group that I used to play and then moderate on made for me, the skin I had, that I had made as an actual representation of myself annoyed him so he made it better while keeping the overall look that I had.

I'm just glad I grew up with the saying "If it costs nothing, you're the product". Makes me immune to this kind of stuff. If something does sound too good to be true, always ask yourself "how do they pay for what they're promising you?" If you can't answer that with a legitimate financing strategy, stay clear.
