Queen endgames are known to be complicated. Any natural move could cause you to lose all advantage. That check, which is a natural-looking move that I (I'm rated 2000) and all the commentators would've played is apparently a blunder... Even Magnus has trouble with Queen endgames. It's just that there are hundreds of thousands of variations to calculate by the third move for Queen endgames.

@@coosoorlog Saying it's practically impossible is a big stretch. I am sure that Fabi would have won this game 90% of the time if this is not the final round. There are multiple points in the game that he could have simplified the game and went for a clear winning endgame. It's more like the nerve in this case. But I guess that is what make Magnus so dominant. He never miss this kind of position under pressure.
@thesnackbandit

@@coosoorlogIt was not “practically impossible” , but of course very difficult. I think if not for nerves/ immense pressure, Fabiano would not have played Ka1 or Qc6+, at least not without spending more time in a position where he didn’t risk anything. But credit to Nepo, some incredibly tricky and resilient defensive moves. Heartbreaking all round.

Queen endgames are unfortunately way too complicated that any human, including Magnus, would have trouble grasping due to the variations. It's just unfortunate because before the 40th move, Fabi has an opportunity to liquidate and be up 2 pawns in a simplified endgame without the black h pawn, yet chose against it.

Yes, but the integrity of the game is questioned at that point. If for example Nepo would have resigned to allow Fabi to advance to tie breaks against Gukesh and Fabi won, then he went on to beat Ding he would be considered an illegitimate champion. I don’t think Fabi or Nepo would want to win it that way. Better to go down honorably and try and come back in 2 years.
@vibovitold
@vibovitold 2 ай бұрын
first and foremost it would be unethical and very poor sportsmanship. theoretically illegal too, although it's a matter of whether it could be actually proven - but that's another story. there is pretty strong circumstantial evidence that the Soviet players did this sort of thing back in the Cold War days (throwing or drawing games to give eachother a better chance against foreign players in international tournaments).

The Candidates needs a review. If you look at the results table, the "winner" is not the person who plays the best against the best players, it's the player who plays the best against the lower rated players. The players at the bottom have the most power to influence the results - by either not playing as well (unintentionally) or giving up because they can't mathematically win any more. Don't get me wrong - Gukesh is a worthy winner. Neither Hikaru, Nepo or Fabi were able to win on demand - as you'd expect of a champion. But as Magnus said, the system needs to be reviewed. A round robin style in itself is not ideal when draws are more common than wins.

Because that's collusion, no matter if you use something random (like a coin) or a bribe (many coins). Anything else than playing to eachother's best ability is basically like a conspiration by two players to reduce the chances of another player (in this case Gukesh). How could that possibly be fair play? What's next then, maybe not playing a game at all and just flipping a coin, let's go to the beach instead : ) It's a professional sport

Great effort but cmon, this looks like regular players playing rapid, i know the position is tough but they're gms, literal gms, you can't be making that mistakes, but i guess it was the nerves and a lot of factors, idk i'm not a good player myself lol.

Tremendous psychological pressure (that's not a regular tournament) combined with overall exhaustion (it's not like they can fully recover throughout the tournament, even with the rest days). Even the best players get paranoid, start overthinking etc. Human brains simply aren't designed to play chess. And that's part of the (uneasy) pleasure

Yes, and they cannot resign or just throw away the game just to prolong or probably quash Gukesh seat to the WCC via a playoff. Gukesh played fair and showed fighting spirit so they also consider that part as to why they didn't just want to give their seat to the other in a dead-draw by suddenly blundering or unexpectedly resigning a drawn position which would be a black mark on both their careers had they done so. I think nepo felt more pain for Fabi, seeing how he salvaged this draw after being almost down multiple times. I felt nepo wished he lost to fabi base on the last seconds of the game and his facial expression at that lost opportunity for fabi.

Draw = Lose for both of them. I dont understand why they don't do something to avoid the draw. Maybe play with 30secs on the clock and let's see who plays faster? Or just play Rock-paper-scissors and then the loser lets the winner win? Idk, but lose-lose seems the worst scenario. Maybe would be unfair/dirty to do that? Can someone tell me if that would be illegal maybe? Sorry I dont play chess.

@@user-SkmBeats thanks for the answer! Yeah that's what I thought, but still seems a little bit stupid to me. Maybe they could've found an opening or a position where the % of draws is very very small and go from there? That wouldn't be unethical, right?

Never losing doesn't mean you deserve the spot. Giri didn't lose a single game in 2016 and finished 6th same for Ding in 2018 who finished fourth. You have to earn your spot with wins.

Abasov is a nice, humble guy, and a very strong GM (if obviously not on the same level as the rest of the pack here). He qualified legitimately and even if you don't like the format or the process that seeded him into the tournament, it's sure as hell not his fault. Calling him "Idiotsov" only shows what a bitter and immature person you are.
