OK Guys, it's time to take an updated look at the Montreal Canadiens blueline. With many young defensemen coming up and into the mix.. Kent Hughes is in a situation where he may be FORCDED to make a deal.. Just to allow some room for other kids to crack the lineup in the near future. Lets talk about it!

Guhle - reinbacher hudson - mailloux Xhekaj - Savard 7st Struble I'm pretty close to you but, I prefer to expect Guhle and Rainbacher to be a together to defend against big offensive line and match Hutson with Mailloux to be an effective offensive pair. Maybe your're right and Hutson-renbacker and Guhler mailloux would be more balance than my way to do. We will see

It's just that, as much as I love Hutson I dont feel like he gonna be ''THE GUY'' for get 25 minute againts the best of the league on a regular basis. Guhle already prove that he can do that role. Lets Hutson be our's PP GUY, its gonna be enough

@MrLaurentdion20 I think you may be right placing Ghule with Reinbacher But I'd have Hutson with steady ol Savard and put Mailloux along side Xhekaj they were dominant in the AHL together that way you have offense and defense in each line

I fully understand that we should probably move 1 or 2 defensemen but when I look back and see how young guys like Chelios and McDonagh turned out it scares the bejesus out of me! I find it difficult to tell who has the most potential!

Agreed. Never been a fan of Harris’ game. I’d rather keep Strubel over Barron - defense wins championships. I’d rather have defensive defenseman. Let the offense score the goals now that we’re starting to get a little more fire power upfront.

I disagree. A major part of offense comes from defensemen. They get the pucks out of zones, they control transition, and help maintain the cycle in the offensive zone, not to mention provide tons of points in the case of Hughes and Makar. A major reason why the leafs couldn’t score against Boston is that they had pylons who could barely skate at defense. Look at successful teams like Florida, Edmonton, Vegas, Colorado, Dallas, New York, and Tampa. They all have very skilled offensive defensemen to sustain and drive offense along with the forwards.

I like the idea of keeping Savard around. Perfect lockdown D that every contender has or wishes they had. He's one of those guys who won't really slow down with age either since his playstyle doesn't require him to have to skate. Great lineup I just hope we keep Struble around somehow.

Savard is an absolute gladiator. I hope he can stay and retire as a hab whenever that may be. Harris and barron.. yeah i liked kovacevic more than either of them and hes gone so those 2 are clearly expendable

I’d rather keep Struble over Barron, but that is just me. Struble is strong and steady. I think he could be extremely valuable for pairing with an offensive man like Hutson. Struble is an asset to this team. Hughes knows his value and so do the rest of us. It is not a gamble to keep him. It certainly is a gamble to trade away a guy like him. If we want to have a chance at making the playoffs and then doing damage in them, I will insist on keeping Struble.

I agree pretty much on everything. I like keeping Savard as a vet. And the others are most likely the future. But they aren't there yet. So nothing should be made too quick. A month or two is a little soon for my taste but I get that you just can't have everyone either in Laval or scratched. As Ric Flair would say, "You gotta BEAT the man to BE the man.". So they need lots of minutes in the big league to become what we hope. And as for Matheson's value, it sucks to trade someone JUST because they had a great season and his value is high and you're worried about losing that value. That shouldn't be a concern. I think he's going to keep his value or more for a few seasons still. It was a big deal when he was brought in to MTL. He's a hometown boy. And he came through for MTL way more than we could've hoped. And he did it on a team that finished almost at the bottom that was starved for goals. So I wouldn't be surprised if he produces even more and his value increases. So unless he's being traded somewhere that is somewhere that he would love or get a huge pay raise, I see no option of letting him go anytime soon. Until Hutson really REALLY proves himself , I would keep Mike for GOOD.

Future as in this October? I see Mailloux and Reinbacher in Laval. Baron on the 3rd pair RD. So the right looks like Ghule (off side) Savard, Baron. LD: Matheson, Hutson and Arber X. Struble rotating in on the Left side. Harris traded.

Nah, the future is likely hitting the 2026-27 season when Matheson's contract expires. By then, the Habs should have a pretty established D-core from the prospects they have.

Keeping them down one more year won't hurt at all. They can bring them up end of the season again to give them some experience to get ready for the 2025-2026 season where they are basically shoe-ins to the lineup

I like your lineup. The important thing is for the team to start trading some of these prospects so we can stack the forward lines. Bring some up from Laval and trade those who have had some NHL time, like Strubel, who can help another team.

One of the positives is that time is on our side. You can have Hutson, Mailloux and Reinbacher play in the AHL and play some minutes down there. There's no rush.

Agree with most of this. I been thinking the same with Matheson(sell high) plus the leftside is full full plus Chewbacca is a better mentor for the boys. I would rather keep Struble over Barren he plays soft

Hutson-reinbacher Guhle-mallioux Struble-barron Would be my pairing in 3-4 years. Trade matheson at the trade deadline getting at least a first rounder and then package that first round and harris to get a big player for the top 6 (like necas or zegras) or a elite goalie ( askarov or dostal) and the rebuild is pretty over after this

i gotta disagree on this one, personally mike matheson needs to stay. i completely agree that his value right now is through the roof but a guy like that we need to help shore up the D. especially when the offense has a hard time going. Barron? Gone 110%. As for Harris and Strubel? I could go either way with those 2 but i'd keep Toaster Struble. as for Popcorn, Mailloux and Cale Makar 2.0, i dont think Popcorn will quiet make it yet to the big leagues, as much as i like to see him opening night, dont think hes there yet TBH, but im probably wrong on that one.

I am 90% with ya brother....the only difference for me is Baron. I would keep Strubble over him. He's like a mini Arber and is better defensively than Justin. As a number 7, I'd rather have a steady tough Dman than a risky Baron. Plus, with Hudson, Ghule and Reinbacker, we are stacked on offensive D. And to be honest, Arber is being underestimated IMO. He is still young and far from reaching his ceiling and with a 107 MPH slapper, he can grow into a beast on the blueline. He's on my second PP pair right now. cheers!

I can see Harris and Matheson and possibly Barron being traded. But I see Struble, Xhekaj, Mailloux, and Reinbacher having Canadiens written all over them. Savard, though, is the senior VP of defense.

Not sure they trade Matheson yet but Savard is likely gone at trade deadline for a 1st rounder or a package for a top 6 forward. If both Mailloux and Barron look good starting the season then Savard will be traded as likely Reinbacher will be pushing for his place by mid season. That means Guhle goes back to left and now Matheson is trade bait and would bring a good package if he continues racking up points. Good thing about Guhle is he can switch sides and so can Hutson so we have two versatile Dmen.

I think you make a point talking about Matheson. i do not think he is part of the long term plan. And with a guy like Hudson this year, i fear he will make less points. And if he does, his value is gonna diminish. So that being said, I think this is the right time to trade him

If not, maybe loan him at the trade dealine for some great picks or prospects and get him back a year later on free agency. I would not trade Matheson this summer. Harris or Savard maybe!

"Dont want to trade Matheson" He is the best value for a player that will be outside of the competitive window in a few years. Guhle is ready for 25 mins per night and they have Savard. I'd rather have a 5th or 6th D be our veteran than a 1 or 2 that we wont need when his value has dropped.

Not a chance in hell Savard is here past the trade deadline, unless they just want to let him walk and get nothing for him. Matheson will likely be gone the following year. Future D after Savard and Matheson go, so like in 3 seasons from now. Hutson Guhle Engstrom Reinbacher Xhekaj Mailloux Protz Need Savard to pair with Hutson until the trade deadline, trade away Savard, bring up Reinbacher to take his place Matheson to insulate him from top line minutes, and then once Matheson is in his contract year, he gets traded and Hutson moves up 1LD

Ngl I have no interest in keeping Savard around till the end of his contract, I'd trade him before the season starts or at the deadline also the way I look at Barron is that him Hutson, and Mailloux all are offensive defenseman and Barron has the lowest upside so he wouldn't be on either pp lines in the upcoming future so trade him for a young forward, (Necas)

im just a habs fan brain storming here dont grill me for this, but i feel like the closer we get to september, the more gm's know that we're desperate to move pieces which lowers the value of our moveable pieces, our cards are on the table and teams know it and the offers reflect that and hughes wont just give em away so we're at a stand-still with declining value. worst case ontario, they play with the rocket and just get called up if we deal with more injury shit

62 points, can go coast to coast, home town-does every presser in French! In 3 years when the Habs might be on the cusp, maybe they’ve matched that contribution. Right now Savard, Harris and Struble should be shopped. They are all familiar in the NHL. As it stands hyped-up Hutson is not an NHL player with any work sample. Maybe by the trade deadline Matheson will be on the radar of a contender, and the newbies get more of a look. Baron is already a fast gifted 6’-2’ NHL tested offensive defenseman and is very very young. If his D grit grows…a keeper. Logan and Reinbacher will grow into to 4 D men.

I have the exact same roster as you except no Savard and we get Struble. Yes Savard is basically a goalie but hes 33! He probably will wanna leave to a contender soon. But other then that. Great future at defense.

to trade Matheson would be easy but l you get for him? unless its a top 6 winger its a no go. Savard has one year left so trade him now and max out his value to a cup contending team like Dallas or Edmonton or Winnipeg. Matheson will still be valuable for the the next three to 5 years.

Hughes ...Gorton are to blame I was not happy when they drafted Reinbacher we should be all in on forwards NOT D and NOT goalies.I stated long ago that I saw all I need to see and I would trade Guhle and lose Harris/Savard and Barron those 3 are not remotely good enough.We would still need to bench a D or two but the coach should be moving guys in and out to keep them all fresh for the entire season instead of over playing Matheson like we did last year. I would NEVER trade Matheson and luckily Hughes is a friend of Matheson so I don't see him being moved unless he asked to be traded. I will repeat Guhle is over rated he is not good any anything just very very average.
