In the book this wasn’t a mistake on Lister’s part it was planned. He made sure the cat was clean and disease free so the ship wouldn’t be at risk and he sent the pictures so he’d get caught. He only joined the ship because he needed a lift home to earth he figured if he got caught and stasis’d he’d skip the work and wake up home

"Everybody is dead Dave " shall go down in history as one of the best phrases ever :)

The scene between Lister being frozen and coming out of stasis is so eerie. Nobody when first watching this episode could have known what went on within the ship until Lister finally came out. All of what happened to the crew so long ago, seems like it only took a few seconds.

That first Hollie was my favorite.... I love the episode he plays a joke on them, making Lister think a sausage he left out in his flat back home grew a covered half the planet.

Interesting how the very first episode starts with killing everyone, and the story happens in space where there are so few characters. And it still works.

The only thing I like about this remastered scene is the music they use for when Red Dwarf flies through space after Lister goes into stasis. I'm annoyed that they got rid of the music used for when Holly tells Lister that they're dead though. Removes the drama from it

You can really really start to feel for Holly. Such a simple message, and the recipient just won't accept delivery.

I really like Mac Macdonald as Captain Hollister. I especially like how he came back in that series XII episode 27 years after his last appearance.

Dave was saved because he would not give up his cat. His sweet morality saved his life.

I remember the first time I saw Red Dwarf and Doctor Who and Monty Python here stateside across the pond ... Public Broadcasting on Saturday nights ran all three back in the late 80's ... been a fan of all three and more Britcoms ever since ... Britcoms are the Rule Britannia of all comedies ...

I remember this from the first broadcast. I watched it in the living room of my parent's house. My mum was there, my dad was on nightshift and my brother was in bed as he was too young to still be awake! I have seen every episiode since then, I have some of the t shirts (including some that die hard fans would give their right arm to own). I have the original VHS tapes, a Mr Flibble puppet, a mug and a key ring. I have DVD's and the memory of a Coronation Street crossover. My most treasured belonging is an 8x 11 screenshot of the cockpit of Starbug from season V signed by Chris, Danny, Craig, Danny and Norman that I won from the local BBC store way back when. Yeah, I'm trying to claim that I'm a superfan, but I've been there from the very beginnining ( and I have a verified seies collectible from the source) so I feel justified in my claim. I have seen the show transfer fro BBC to Dave and I'm patiently waiting for series XIII. Go Boys from the Dwarf!

I remember as a kid watching this on recorded VHS. I remember it EXACTLY like this. When I rewatch on netflix, they miss so much out!

In the Books, Lister deliberately has his picture taken with the cat to be developed (He also made sure Frankenstein was fully vaccinated before bringing her on board) so that the captain would throw him in stasis and he can get a free (and instant) trip home without working. If anyone gets the chance, the books are a really good read!

Ah, series 1, when Red Dwarf actually bothered with continuity. The stasis scene is amazingly beautiful, but the remastered series simply adds bells and whistles for no reason.
