Rod Liddle gives his take as an extra 400,000 people are reportedly still unable to work since Covid.
The ONS said the unemployment rate hit 4.2 per cent during the last quarter, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous three-month period as more people look for work.
Liddle says: “We are the only country where there hasn’t been a move back to work post-Covid… numbers of people still on long-term sickness are going up every year!”

People aren't going back to work because they don't see much to work for, it is a kind of mass depression descending over the nation with many just giving up or just going through the motions at work. I have never known such a general feeling of hopelessness and malaise, it's really worrying. Every day we are attacked for just existing, the constant degrading of our culture and heritage, lambasted for our impact on the environment, battered by huge cost of living increases while we watch illegal immigrants rocking up and being given everything for free.

Yep, in my office every person is effectively doing 1.5 people's worth of work and are exhausted. Directors have been told we need more resource or things will begin crumbling down but they choose not to listen. Even in my local area you notice people walking around slower and in more of a daze looking constantly exhausted which is a very new thing around here. People are going to go on sick or drop out of work and I don't blame them, people are working ridiculous hours and still coming home with little more than enough to pay the bills while again the wealthy and the politicians do nothings but pretend to sympathise while having millions (if not billions) in the bank. There really is no point in anyone below 30k a year working at the moment as in the current system they'd be much better off on benefits with an additional 40+ hours a week to do what they want.

@@james970027 Know exactly what you mean, I see so many people just walking about like zombies in the street now, they barely even want to leave their houses but when they do just can't be bothered interacting with anyone else. Shops are half empty because everything has moved online where no one even has to leave the house. Politicians are worse than useless making the situation worse with endless tax increases, onerous rules introduced just to take more money or increase the cost of everything even more than already happened. No vision for the future because there is no future, we are on a trajectory to disaster right across the western world. Criminals operate with impunity while the law abiding are hammered relentlessly. Shoplifting and other petty crime now simply ignored by the authorities, violence now so common it doesn't even get reported. This is how civilisation ends, some claim it is the rich elites causing it all and maybe there is milage in that but the lack of interest by the general population is giving them cart blanch to do whatever they like. Scandal after scandal now seemingly ignored with anyone drawing attention to it vilified by a totally corrupt media. Children being indoctrinated openly with the most toxic, degenerate behaviours and ideology causing all kinds of mental illness and a total inability to cope with the real world.

@paulroberts7544 It is a very good point, I know people who have lost everything over the last few years though government fiat so why would they be bothered to even attempt to build anything again. The heart has been torn out of the middle classes and many if not most have stopped even trying.

Those people are the least of the worries, apart from a handful that might be an issue, which processing properly would sort out. The billions fleeced out of the economy by non-tax paying billionaires here far outweighs any knock on effects from processing refugees/migrants and any limited benefits they might get once processed. Yes, people coming to shore in boats is an issue. They need to turn back, bless ‘em. It’s no sanctuary here for the average person, let alone people fleeing whatever circumstances elsewhere

Well why work ? you are villified for being the wrong sex or colour and excluded from jobs ( RAF , local councils, etc) . You see people arrive from oversea that get mobile phones , go to the top of the housing list ( even have homes built for them that you cannot hope to get ) , get grants and social security money thats not available to you and access to NHS they have never paid a penny into (because they 've just arrived ). You're also the butt of every joke on the TV ads , and villian in drama /soaps , etc. And to top it all you're expected to pay up every time whilst those at the top are swanning around pocketing tax payers money and lecturing you on how YOU need to cut down(!) So where's the motivation , anyone?

The government is tasked with administering a number of aspects of public life. Unfortunately they have done such a bad job of it, that many people have lost hope for their futures. Once the public lose hope in the future, this is what happens; people give up because they don't see any benefit in them working hard and getting on. All we get nowadays is bombarded with bad news: climate disaster, high inflation, strikes, war in Ukraine, the dismal performance of the NHS, mass illegal immigration, scare stories about future pandemics, etc etc. Is it any wonder that people feel like giving up.

They're fighting a losing war with the "come back to the office" battle. Considering they pay people next to nothing for what they do anyway and companies are desperately seeking workers currently I'm pretty sure most people would simply move jobs if they really didn't want to go back to the office - particularly as they'd probably find the same job on higher salary now with work from home (if available in their line of work). At the end of the day they've screwed it for themselves by taking advantage of people over the last few decades if not longer. Now they are panicking that they can't regain control of their workforce or rely on foreign immigration anymore and their businesses are struggling.

The status quo is unsustainable. The ONS in 2020 found that 37% of adults in the UK pay no tax at all. Probably gone up since COVID due to more drawing sickness and disability benefits. In principle, more can and should be done to get those that can back into work, especially with work from home. But the very last people I would trust to administer it properly are this government. They f up everything they touch. Labour started the rot in 1997. Neither have made work pay, they have just taken what most taxpayers would probably see as reasonable then added a fat chunk on top. Those who know how to cheat and fraudulently claim will continue to do so. We see time and again that public institutions from local council to central government just go for the easy target. They will ignore the worst culprits and penalise people who make genuine mistakes on applications instead.

Lol. Don't look at me. I'm not one of them. I work 12 hour shifts in heavy industry and because my job was classed as essential during the pandemic, I had to work each and every scheduled shift if I didn't want to loose any pay. I had to carry a letter around with me from my employer in case I was stopped by the police that explained my work was essential and because of its manual nature, could not be carried out from home. So there was and never will be any working from home for me. I had to take a COVID test every day during all the lockdowns to make sure I could attend work. I must have done hundreds of them and never had one positive test.

Imagine working at minimum wage and losing all of your unemployment benefits - on benefits many people qualify for housing payments (around £700 pcm approx), they dont pay council tax (£180 pcm), free prescriptions and dental care (£50 pcm est.), also most get unemployment benefit (£400 pcm approx) - add that up = £1380 as a minimum per month. Lets compare; Minimum wage for over 25s = £10.42 x 37.5 (normal working week) = £390.75 or £1693.25 pcm before tax. This equates to post tax and NI take home pay of £1486.61 pcm So if you sit on your arse and do nothing you get £1380 and if you slog for 40 hrs a week - you get £1485 ??? And you wonder why people refuse to work.

Not to mention slogging working all week to still have next to fuck all left and be unable to save or get anywhere in life over decades is mentally draining.. it's no wonder mental health sickness is on the rise when people sre slogging 60 hour weeks and still have fuck all to show for it.. clapped out cars, can't even afford a butlins holiday.. etc it really isn't hard to see why people are depressed in greater numbers, not too long ago you could work a factory job and still own a house and have a half decent car, now no banks will give you a mortgage so you have to spend twice as much per month to rent somewhere knowing you'll never get the chance to own something or have anything to leave your kids when you work yourself into the grave.. my parents generation had mortgages, bank loans, unlimited credit cards etc literally thrown at them by the banks, ive never even been able to get a planned overdraft.. let alone be able to borrow to be able to own a property like all the do gooders who think they're above the renters because they had a cheap house from a council buyers scheme for like 40k on a low interest mortgage a potato could have applied for and been accepted.. and look down on us who pay 800 a month to rent and have no hope of a mortgage and even if we could convince the bank, the cheapest houses which aren't falling apart are like 180k..
