Hey man, loved the video, but I think you're captured by the phenomenon you describe to a higher degree than you realize. Its very frustrating with the left, because no matter how well intentioned or informed they are, theres always like this weird blind spot they avoid like the plague. Leftists adhere to religion in the same way conservatives do. Only difference is their faith comes from themselves. They believe in themselves and echo what they're told, and when they do research its most always unintentionally against conservatives. There are as many lies from democrats just as republicans, but the way you frame your video may leave people unknowingly associating lies with one party,

The absolute worst part about trying to be objective and see the nuance in things is that you often come out saying "I don't know"... And for some stupid reason, people look at you like you "have no backbone" because you aren't willing to take a stance on something you don't 100% know for certain. Nuance is dead and the internet killed it.

Having the analogy of fortress and bricks is helpful, but seeing what physically and mentally happens, and in what parts of the brain would have been more valuable. One thing about confirmation that stuck with me was something my math professor told me in college : if you make a false assumption such as 1=2, you can use it to prove any math theorem, true or false. I think this also applies to opinions and knowledge in general : if your base belief is false, all the very logical, well researched, rigourous inferences that you make based on it may very well be false as well. A very difficult thing to do when making an opinion on a subject is questionning our fundamental beliefs it is based on.

The main reason crime is going down on the stats is because many types of crimes that would be reported are no longer reported, for various reasons such as theft under 5 grand being re classified as a misdemeanor and no longer contributing to the stats.
@jmrm01
@jmrm01 4 күн бұрын
Sorry, but this claim doesn't hold up. First, theft is reported even if it isn't a felony. For example, the Council on Criminal Justice reports in November 2023 the median shoplifting crime is "roughly $100" and 90% of shoplifting is less than $756. So, thefts of less than $5,000 are reported and appear in statistics. Second, shoplifting has decreased the most from 2019 through June 2023 in cities with $1,000 felony limits (Minneapolis down 57%, St. Paul down -65%) and $750 felony limits (St. Petersburg down -78%).

@@jmrm01 Might want to dig into why shoplifting number have decreased in cities that increased the amount you can take before it becomes a felony. Yes, some theft is reported if it's under that threshold, but I'd be willing to bet most is not. How many examples do you need of criminals casually walking into stores taking a bunch of stuff and walking out while being videotaped. How would they get to the point of not caring who sees them or how fast they go without knowing how they will be responded to/ not responded to. Explain why so many big brands are packing up and leaving big cities? They just don't like making money right?

@@Pest889 Store close all the time. Somebody in management sees a store is "underperforming," and decides to close it. And it sounds better if you blame the closing on shoplifting rather than the competition is out performing you. The store chains themselves through their own advocacy organization later reveal that shoplifting is decreasing...
@jmrm01
@jmrm01 Күн бұрын
@@MitchellFX5 Except big brands aren't leaving cities. They are closing a few random underperforming stores, and telling gullible people that shoplifting is the reason. And later admitting that wasn't the reason. Fox News recognized a good propaganda story when they saw it, and started pushing the idea that "Crime is rampant! Stores are closing!" I personally became suspicious when I could got to the store's own website as see they closed 2 out of 45 stores in the city they were supposedly leaving because of crime. The problem is the shoplifting is down in cities that didn't raise the amount you steal before it becomes a felony. In fact, shoplifting is down dramatically over all. You realize that there are 333 million people in the US. So, rare things happen all the time. So, I'd need to see a few thousand videos before I'd accept such evidence over actual hard numbers from crime enforcement or even the retailers' own advocacy group. It is true, and has been for AT LEAST the last 50 years or more that the police tell you not to fight back during a robbery. Retailers tell employees not to resist during a robbery. Let security or police handle it. Insurance companies tell retailers that they will cancel the store's coverage if the store's policy isn't "don't resist during a robbery." It's hard to believe that a half century of policy suddenly caused a big change two years ago.

Poltics does not have to be your identity. In fact, most people who "support" biden dont actually support him. They just dont want Trump back. Most of the supporters for Trump think he's the second coming of Jesus come to fix politics. But really he's the same exact thing but for different corporations - foreign, mostly though. Just worry about your local polticians, your city, your county, and your state. That will affect your day to day more than Biden or Trump will. It's neither of their faults that the world is expensive.

This is the Johnny Harris style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented journalism, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, taking risks in conflict areas to tell a powerful story. Keep up the amazing work, Johnny! 👏👏👏 May I also remind you of the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shockingly sad truth. 😔 In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return to rightful owners Native American people. Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deal, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤷

The easiest way to catch lies is to look at what the one giving you the information really wants. If the information seems to directly contradict their goals, it's likely to be true. Why would someone lie to harm himself or help his opposition? If the information is beneficial to them and it is true, it's still probable that they are exaggerating or leaving out negative aspects and/or doubts and uncertainties. This is most promising, if the person involved has a direct stake and/or influence in the matter they are spreading information about. The further someone is removed, the harder it is to tell if they are reporting factual or just repeating the misinformation of someone else. This is when checking facts becomes more important and useful.

It's funny that the statistics used to "debunk" crime being on the rise show higher homicide rates in 2023 than in 2019 on the 70 major city chart and individually in each of NY/LA/Chicago on that chart. The video completely ignores that framing (see above!) is often what determines whether a "fact" is true or untrue - the truth or a lie. The decrease in crime was framed in a way that aligned with Harris' worldview. Someone else may say that homicides are up from 2019 despite the general decades long trend that crime *should* decrease over time and that many cities have cut police funding in that timeframe.

He also took the statement "Crime is on the rise", and then debunked it with violent crime stats. I'll totally believe that violent crime is trending down post-pandemic. What I don't believe is that crime in general is trending down. Even if the reported stats say it is, you have to contend with the issue that most of the hotspots of crime (major cities) have issues with crime not being punished, and people stop even bothering to report it to police. I myself have never filed a police report either time my car was broken into, for example. Violent crime doesn't suffer as much from that issue, particularly murder.

The "crime on the rise" debunking is a very complicated subject because theres way more than one metric of measurement and on top of that different ways of collecting information which has gotten worse with more people not reporting crime, major citys not reporting their crime to the FBI, and also if CA for example decriminalizes shoplifting up to $950, crime number will go down as shoplifting (under the allowed amount) explodes

In the same way that someone cannot be trusted to always tell the truth after telling it once, you cannot be sure that someone is never telling the truth because they have not done so once. I would argue it is the balance that matters, if the ratio of truths to falsehoods is higher someone is more trustworthy. Therefore those official communications channels can still be more trustworthy than any other source you have even if they admitted to reported mistruths. Retractions were made for when this happens.

When people say crime is on the rise they are not exclusively talking about violent crime. Violent crime statistics are likely more reliable since people are more likely to report them. However smaller crimes like car break-ins and retail theft are through the roof. The only problem is that they are way under reported because the police never do anything about it and D.A.s don't prosecute it. Crime is up but we're just not measuring it.

Thank you, I was scouring the comment section trying to find someone talking about this. Sorry Johnny, I appreciate your videos and the overall message of this video but you missed the mark on that specific example. It is ironic because Johnny’s fact-check is actually a lie in and of itself. Granted, homicides are down. That is correct (with some exceptions). But crime is not exclusive to homicides, and non-violent crime *is* statistically on the rise in every major U.S. city. This also doesn’t take into account recent catch-and-release measures taking place across crime hubs such as SF and NYC which in turn have led to a more lax approach to law enforcement where police officers in many instances will not even arrest for non-violent crime, which means those crimes are not automatically excluded from crime stats. Debunking the blanket statement of “crime is on the rise” (which is technically true) with a line graph of homicides is simply a strawman fallacy, and ergo a lie. The whole crime statistics of 2024 are much more complex than that that I daresay they deserve their own deep-dive.

What a great one. Something I (quietly) like to brag about is that 1) I'll be very suspicious of a lot of things I hear because I know that the probability that the message is false or misleading is high, and 2) I'm atually not afraid of saying "I don't know". For most big issues and questions, I'm even convinced that there is valuable information that I don't know and that is needed to paint a complete picture. Completely unrelater, but I think this is where it's starting to blend in with Imposter syndrome...

@@miniredin527 Sorry, I should have made that clear from the beginning. I live in Greece, and I am informed by independent journalists, who have channels on KZfaq. There will certainly be American journalists on the platform who do not follow the agenda, and who, at least, try to expose them. Like Carlson for example, idk..
