What is the difference between THEY'RE, THEIR and THERE -
English Grammar Rules
Their, They're and There sound the same in English. Words that sound the same are called homophones. It is a common mistake to misspell these words in written English, even for native English speakers.
In this English lesson we look at the different meanings and uses of these words with many example sentences.
We look at the meaning of THEY'RE including:
- They're + adjective
- They're + verb-ing
- They're + plural noun
We look at the meaning of THEIR including its use as a possessive adjective before a noun
- Their + noun
We look at the meaning of THERE including:
- There as the opposite of here.
- There is and There are
We seen an example of a sentence that contains They're, Their and There (all at once).
Then we give some tips to help you remember the difference between THEY'RE and THEIR.
At the end of this grammar lesson we have included a section to practice the difference between these words. There are 8 sentences with a space (or spaces) in them. The viewer needs to complete the sentence with They're, Their or There. The answers to this exercise will appear on the screen.

I'm a 72 year old British man, and I always get confused which one to use, but this video has helped me a lot, I understood about 'There' meaning a place, but confused with using 'Their' in the right situation, hopefully now I will use the correct one in the future.....Thank you.

This is an excellent video that helped my 9 year old finally get these homonyms down. The best part is towards the end where you do the "does the word work here" and show examples, to make the learner really think about it. Then, he was able to get all 8 fill in the blank questions correct. Awesome, thank you for sharing this video!
