The Mission: To save a stripped out and forgotten D-Day Airplane from the Scrapyard and get her flying for the 75th anniversary of D-Day (June 6th, 2019).
The Timeframe: We have only 6 months to get the DC-3 flying.
The Reason: This airplane is only a handful left in the world that actually flew on D-Day. We are getting her flying in the memory of people who lost their lives that day, June 6th, 1944.
The Cost: Everything we have.
I hope you AvGeeks enjoy the episode!

DTD. Three letters that really didn't hold much significance in my life until a channel popped up in my You Tube feed a few months ago. Mikey, in his office in Yellowknife, in the dead of winter, and he talked of a DC-3. A young man, with aviation in his blood and a love of ll things DC-3 and, a healthy reverence for history. I listened to his dream. Then, I watched it happen. And now those three letters, DTD...will always bring me back the place I am now, in my heart, and in my memory. Watching as the days passed and the people came and the phoenix began it's rise from the ashes. As the snow melted she began to shine again, due to the determined efforts of a young woman who shared Mikey's life, and his passion for the project. With Ronnie leading the charge and a handful of gifted mechanics and incredibly dedicated students, and the volunteers...and the day came. And Buffalo Joe and Quinn, a former, "graduate" of Buffalo Air...unleashed her and put her back in the sky again...75 years to the day after she delivered heroes to their destiny on D-Day. You did your grandfather proud, Quinn...I could almost see him behind Ronnie. I know you felt him. Then, It was over. Mikey has done more than all of this...he has created a community, and I am proud to be part of it. Perhaps someday we will see another Title Card and hear the yell again, as another bird gets her wings back, and we all say it again as the screen shows us..."PLANE SAVERS"

Much agreed with sentiments but it requires a lot of time (thousands of hours reading/training) to fly multi-engine aircraft. He's the Director of Ops for Buffalo Airlines and still found time to put this awesome Plane Savers series together. Could tell by the end he was tired & running on fumes (& no wonder taking a bit of a break). At age 35 he has had a lifetime of opportunities to become a pilot but current occupation seems to fit him very well. Was introduced to Plane Savers by watching Steve on the FlightChops KZfaq page. Been very cool to watch Steve work through the steps in his flight training including taking the wheel of a DC-3. Has really made me appreciate also learning to fly is not for everyone with time being the biggest limiting factor for most with the desire.

At 71 years of age is is fantastic to see something older than me performing so well. I have always thought that was the most beautiful plane around. Perfect lines and balance. I got to fly in two of them back in the late 60s . First one had the starbord engine blow up shortly after take off. Captain came on as calm as anything said they had had some mechanical problems so they returned to Wright Patterson AFB. Second try the next day flew right into JFK in NY. I was the only passenger left and the captain flew around Brooklyn to let me see my house from the plane. Contradulations on a fantastic series, and the restoration of a true classic airplane. thank you

My father went into the hospital the day episode 4 aired. I watched it next to him as he slept in a busy emergency room. After emergency brain surgery, weeks of uncertainty (and horror), we got a diagnosis. Our family watched terminal brain cancer take away the strongest person I knew and my rock. I had Plane Savers along with the repaint photos of DZ262 at CWH to keep him up to speed on. He couldn't talk much at first, it was too much of a strain, he'd be so weak the next day if we talked too much, with medication and treatment we got his personality back but he was also getting weaker and fading. It was a confusing time. I got to share in the joy and excitement of watching the process of taking a dusty, old, duct taped relic back towards flight. I could put on an episode and we could watch and laugh without talking or straining my dad. He was still in there and he was still sharp as a tack. I could tell he enjoyed seeing the process and my excitement. Plane Savers was a tiny little light in darkest and scary time of my life. We lost him March 31st. Plane savers helped us build some light-hearted memories and seeing someone take a wild ass dream and bring such a meaningful plane back to life was an honour to share with my father. Thank you for creating some beautiful memories with a man I will honour forever. Thank you for reminding me that dreaming even as a grown up is the only way to find your true path. It's a lesson I am already carrying forward into my life. Without ever meeting you Mikey, I am so incredibly proud of you. I am so grateful for you sharing your dream with us. It was an adventure for you and a well deserved break for us when everything was falling apart. Watching the school and the amazing team that stepped up around you, the generosity and compassion reminded me how much good is in the world; and how much people care to honour our military past. I hope one day, we can meet and I can help with your next project.

Nate....I am absolutely broken reading your post. Thank you for sharing that story. Please know that we took the memory and spirit of all the Plane Savers, the crew, and all those brave soldiers and airmen with us on that flight. When she leapt off the ground she slipped the surly bonds for everyone, and was freed from the chains of decay and sickness that bound her for 27 years. I am glad we could do that to lift your father up there with us for one more memorable flight. He was there Nate, no question!

It brought tears to my eyes when I saw Ron on board for the test flight. He really was the hero of the entire project and the glue that kept it all together. Mikey, I am sitting here with tears in my eyes and an over flowing heart. What you and this crew have accomplished is rare, and special. You and your team of mostly volunteers had a common passion to see this proud and storied bird slip the surly bonds of earth. You did it, she flew again!!! Ronny knew it from the beginning and Joe knew it the moment he saw her, and I can tell you she leapt into the air with the eagerness of a bird that had waited 27 long years locked in chains. She belongs up there amongst the clouds and you and the teamed freed her. Take a bow one and all, you fully deserve it. To have played a small part was an honour and privilege. Thank you Mikey, and thank you to the whole team for putting her back together and for trusting me to help Joe give her another run around the patch. To fly with Joe again, and to have the opportunity to memorialize the pilots and soldiers of D-Day was humbling. Getting to flying the same plane as my grandfather is something I have no words to adequately describe. It was an experience I will cherish for a life time. My hat is off to all of the Plane Savers community that has watched, and supported Mikey and the team in this project. I know that you kept them all going during some tough and long days when the end was not always in sight, but the deadline loomed large. Cheers to all, Quinn

Thank you Quinn for sharing your passion during this special moment. The magic of flight is equal to the look in your eyes. Thank you Joe for the experience and stories you tell (yes, we do listen...). Aircrafts are your life, and it shows! Ronny, Stella, Jay and Trent, you did a wonderful job for holding on the project up to this spectacular moment. Rob, we know you supported your brother in his crazy project, and we are grateful. All volunteers: the time you gave was a time you spent on something bigger than bolts and rivets, paint and wires. Friendship and laughs were present, and a common goal set. Mikey: thank you. « The best craft for human is to unit men » (Le plus beau métier d’homme est d’unir les hommes) Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Hey Quinn.. I don't know you, but we are brothers in the sky. I fly the A380 but would have given it all up to be in that cockpit with you.... Your Grandpa would have been really proud man, a very emotional moment for you but one that you completed with style. You had some serious SA going on there and flew beautifully, well done, it looked like yesterday that you were last doing it. We have to chase the dollar to make a decent living, but if I had my time again I would marry a moose to be able to work for Buffalo and be involved with these lovely aircraft and people. Well done again, good job!

Quinn, when you were announced as the copilot, my first response as a longtime Plane Savers fan was "Who is this stranger coming in at this late stage to fly OUR plane?!" But you won us over with your genuine enthusiasm and I can't imagine the two June 6 episodes without you. You were the representative for all of us who have followed DTD's journey and your on-site reaction to finally seeing her in person was how we would all feel. The way you shared your family's story and demonstrated your gratitude and love during the flight touched us all and made a wonderful experience unforgettable for anyone who watched. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Now they have the Canuck to worry about. That's going to be a project for at least a decade, probably. Getting new wings and working airworthy Orendas isn't going to be easy or cheap, but that would be so cool. Maybe at least restore it to taxiing condition would be an achievement. Flying is probably not going to happen.

If this can't be edited down into a documentary, then my years as a broadcaster have been a waste of time. This episode is worthy of the culmination of all the hard work, dedication, commitment to excellence, attention to detail skill and expertise necessary to rejuvenate a 27 plus year old neglected and all but forgotten Queen of the Sky. Thanks to Mikey and his crew for “saving this plane”. They truly are Plane Savers! An idea for season two of “Plane Savers DTD” is to chronicle where and what her new adventures will be. Mikey, I've just caught up with THE flight..You did it buddy, you and the wonderful team that surrounded you. When you have a dream, you're there to be disappointed. But your tenacity, passion and belief got you through it. Success is often these days seen as a dirty word, brash, loud, 'in your face'. But your quite, persuasive, unassuming manner and close family who believed in you, proved that 'success' can be a thing to be proud of. From embryo to flight in 156 episodes. Fantastic! You have created something here. A group of people across the world who have shared the journey with you. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the privilege to be part of this group, to share it all with you. We've shared Auntie Stella with her 'party mouth', J's awful jokes and a guest appearance by your mum. What a wonderful group of people. So what of the future? Don't let this go. PLEASE! You've proved it can be done and this momentum must be carried forward. Take your time, pick your project wisely, in the knowledge that we are there with you. Two final things. Bobby - He must get parent of the year! And we all know now that DTD has shared the sky with Vincent. God bless young man. As I've said to you before. BE PROUD. 'PLANE SAVEEERRRRSS!

In 1974-76 I was the Senior Avionics Mechanic assigned to the U.S. Army Electronic Proving Ground Aviation Branch at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. We had one of the last C-47 aircraft flying in the Army inventory. We used it to support our OV-1 Mohawks and as a flying test bed for avionics systems. I spent a lot of time working on her we even installed an INS system that was the same as the OV-1D Mohawk. We did a retrofit on her wiring from nose to tail and the main point I want to make is I didn't think you could get her flying in the time allotted. You all pitched in and did one Hell of a good job. Congratulations !

I watched this earlier today and you made a lot of things possible. I believe words cannot express everyone's gratitude for the reconstruction of this aircraft. I saw so many important things going on and I read between the lines. Honoring a former Pilot of the Aircraft was DTD's way of showing that she is still a Bird. All the volunteers were excellent and watching it come together one piece at a time was absolute miracle based. Remember this no one in the World has brought a stripped DC-3 from a scrap yard to flying in just a few months. This was an almost impossible task. If I was you I would try and keep it Flying and Keep those Engines. This Aircraft is Special and Priceless. I seen the other D-Day aircraft however I am Impressed with Backbone Stella who is a good manager. I hope you two get Married on DTD in the Air. Who knows. DTD deserves a Hangar of it's own back at your Home Base. Your Mom and Dad are excellent people be glad you still have yours around. If you can Keep Stella she is your Light. Family, Stella, Hangar, DTD, you have the will power of a hundred men. Get er Dun!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My thanks to everyone who Helped and on my Flight Case I put " In remembrance of those who supported DTD may God be with you". Mikey if I wasn't on my phone I would type out a huge paragraph, but as I am I will come back and type it later. 156 days I've been watching, 156 days of waiting anxiously. Yesterday, she flew. 33 thousand people's dream achieve, she flew. Now, the best and most consistent youtube series is coming to an end. Now, i have nothing to wait for every evening, but the ride as it was was AMAZING. Everything that happened between Episode 1 and today are just amazing. Thank you and the whole crew so much, you all did what most sane people would not do, restore a DC-3 within about 2 months. Maybe next season of Plane Savers I will be able to help out, but until season 2 rolls around, and till we meet again, thank you Mikey, Stella, Joe, Ronnie, serge, Benjamin, Pierre, Bobby, Trent, everyone who I forgot the name of cause I am bad wth names, even 2 months in, everyone from ENA, and the entire Plane Savers community, thank you all.

Mikey, while it almost goes without saying that this was the best episode yet, I have to compliment you on the structure of this episode. It had all of the elements we were hoping for: the team, the cockpit experience, the emotion. The tie-in at the end between Ronnie's initial assessment and post-flight comments was perfect. I have no idea how you put this beautifully structured episode together so quickly in the exhausting aftermath of the flight, but we are so glad you did 😊 Congratulations to every member of this dedicated and hardworking volunteer crew and thank you for allowing the rest of us to feel like extended crew members.

It's hard to know where to start commenting on this video, because I'm in tears watching this episode for so many reasons. You've saved something that helped defeat fasicts, and in doing so honoured the memory of everyone who fought, and in many cases died, protecting those ideals. Not only that, but the idea you and Benoit had to save this aircraft has created a family, in the truest sense of that word. People coming together, from near and far, to build something that transcends any individual, and you've done it with style, wit, a great sense of humour, and not a little cheekiness, but most importantly a sense of humility. I am overwhelmed by the kindness extended by complete strangers to one another, in the pursuit of this noble cause, and have to say that if this is how Canadians treat one another, then the rest of the world has some catching up to do. Lastly, there's a small amount of sadness knowing that this will be the last episode of Plane Savers, but let me temper that with a hope. If you ever find yourself in Australia, I would be honoured to meet you, and extend some local hospitality as a small way of saying, 'Thank You'. Mikey, you are an inspiration, and a gentleman, and as a part of the extended Plane Savers family, I salute you, sir.

@@cmulder002 No I don't mean that troll. Jesus Christ is a real historical figure, documented in secular and Biblical history, which who 2.2 Billion people of all races call Lord and Saviour (and our callander is based on). Christianity doesn't suppress anyone. You're getting confused with Muhammadism which demands all people submit or they be subjugated, exiled or murdered. Yet you have a problem with Jesus Christ who gave his life for our salvation. D-Day USA and Allies sacrificed their lives, 44,000, with blood and treasure to stop the tyranny of Nazis and Japan. Sacrifice it's something you don't know about. You only sucked off your mommy's and societies tit all your life and have never done anything for anyone but yourself. To your racist comment, its OK be white or any race. Lynching? Oh where are people getting lynched? You mean the millions murdered by USSR Stalin, China Mao, Islamic Jihad since 622AD which inspired 9/11 terrorism killing over 3000, more than "lynchings" of which 25% were whites who got lynched. This "lynching" news is almost a century in the past, old news. Your point? Humans are sinful and do bad things all over the World. US corrected past mistakes. USA is a great nation who has given the World many blessings, helps and saved many people and Nations, is the first to come to aid of others with great generosity, invented medical and technological advancements second to none, including the world wide internet you are using to spew your bull shit. You are an idiot. Run along punk. BTW if you don't have a spiritual faith that's fine. I get it. You are a fluke of the universe, came out of nowhere for no reason, poof life just happened by random chance, crawled out of the primordial ooze to become all life; you are a son of a monkey. Got it you have no soul just a lump. May be your Mommy can abort you tomorrow for woman's rights as your life is pointless. Good luck with that. I find it funny dumb people like you who doesn't know anything about history, theology, science, math or life goes around telling other people what they should believe or how bad their country is. You had people from all over the Earth, including precious little preschool girls and grown men on their death beds joined together in work and celebration. That my friend is something special. My thanks and gratitude to all those blessed folks who restored and brought back to the skies this iconic aircraft of what some would consider the start of modern commercial aviation. My Dad’s spirit was on that plane on it’s return to the skies. He worked on just about every C47/DC3 built at Douglas Aircraft and Santa Monica & Long Beach, CA. During WWII one C47 rolled off the line pre flight ready every hour. He retired from McDonell Douglas after 37 years of dedicated service. As a youngster I saw the first DC8 take off from LGB on it’s maiden flight in beginning era of the commercial airline Jet Age.

Hail to all the round engines still in the air out there for performing so well after all these years!! Kudos to the work crew that made sure *EVERYTHING* was up to spec and pre-oiled, massaged, shined, adjusted, and re-checked 3 times or more to make sure that first flight was a safe one!! I finally had an opportunity to see this video this as I was in St Hubert to see it live. There are many reasons a person is drawn toward something. A hobby, memory or a career. I was instantly interested in this aircraft and what you Mikey had set out to do. WHY?I spent my entire 52 years of existence wondering what my Dad Ken would have looked like flying a war bird as this.He was rated in1961 on the Dak and had 12 years on them. I read his logs and was mesmerized by how many places he flew it. I was too young to have seen any of this and never had the opportunity to see him pilot a DC3. The man I admired I lost last December. And with him went his history. When your Uncle Ronnie this aircraft was going to fly, I knew this would be my only chance to see it. To see your Dad pilot this magnificent aircraft, I was given a wonderful gift. I saw what my Dad looked like if he were flying it. It was as though he was there. If I could say thank you 1000 times a thousand, it would not suffice. I'll close by extending my heartfelt gratitude to you, the crew and you Dad who gave me a glimpse into who My Dad was .Ken Escott may1936-Dec 2018 Thanks Mikey.

I hope one day your the Capt of an Air Canada bird I'm on. Cause I know I'll have the best air Canada has had or will ever have.

Wow guys, I was keeping it together up until I read the above. Just over five years ago I was sitting in my Jeep in an Ontario 401 rest stop a km or so over the Quebec border watching KZfaq videos on my iPad. . My dad had just been taken to hospital 6,000 km away and I was posting a message to him about wanting to fly into the airport recently named after him (TTCP) with him aboard. . Well sadly it never happened, I thought he was invincible and we'd have more time. We didn't. . Thanks to your comment Michael and Quinn's actions, I'll find a way to complete that promise of 5 years ago even though he won't be physically sitting beside me. . Its all about dreams and he showed me how to make even the most impossible ones come true, just as PLANE SAVERS set out to do and has done. .

Ronnie and crew did one heck of a job fine tuning the flight control surfaces.Any one else notice how little the inputs on the yoke were to make this D-Day plane fly ? .. What an ending for Plane Savers episode. I am so happy for you Mikey and crew.

I loved Ice Pilots, but Mikey your daily videos have opened up a whole world of possibility on KZfaq. Everything was so genuine and real and not contrived in any way. Real people, all big characters, even the quiet ones (Uncle Ronnie’s understatements were priceless!) No big TV crew, just you and a GoPro. Amazing! Big TV corporations watch out!

There was quite a lot of emotions in there when DTD took off for the first time in so many years. I was there, camera on hands to capture the moment inches by inches. I've assisted to many airshows since I got first passionate about aviation but this event beats them all. Never before I've seen such a family mood where everybody would have shake hands with each other. The entire family was there from Mikey who started it all to the volunteers and those who are really passionate about this beautiful project. Thanks again Mikey, please keep it on a little more ! Sébastien

It is so important that DTD is preserved so that future generations will be understand the incredible triumph of good over evil that was unveiled in World War Two. ... Merci beaucoup, Pierre, for your contribution to this grand enterprise.

Awesome accomplishment, awesome contributions by the team on location, the team at Buffalo Airways, and all those who contributed what they could to support this effort. And Mikey, you should be recognized for your tour de force of project management skills as well as your leadership on this amazing project. I sure enjoyed it, hope there will be a "season two"!

Congrats Mikey on an awesome accomplishment. I work for Bombardier myself at the Challenger plant in Dorval (CYUL) All I can say is that the people and mostly the students from ÉNA should be proud. For the students, there is nothing more awesome than having a mention that they revived a DC-3 on their resume. Congrats to ALL!

Absolutely wonderful stuff. "All aircraft, there will be some delays due to the presence of a DC-3", amazing ATC. :). Joe was great, all business as long as they were flying, 100% the professional pilot, except a brief smile when he was shown the historic documents.

Sorry that Bobby was M.I.A. the last couple episodes. I hope he’s alright and everything is o.k. with him. We miss Bobby! Sad that he couldn’t be there for the end... OH, I see Bobby now! I must have missed him yesterday. Glad he was there after all!

Almost five years later, I still can't watch this episode without crying. I think I bawled more this time than the first time I saw it. Definitely on my bucket list to someday see DTD in person.
