Honestly I feel like there's a Goldilocks Zone. If they're too lovey-dovey, there's no tension. If they only hate each other, there's no spark. So both can end up not being very compelling. The goldilocks zone is like, anywhere from "in love but face roadblocks in order to be happy together" to "obsessive passionate hatred with a reluctant respect for the other as an individual" I think if the former has no roadblocks or the latter has no respect... It ends up being flat and thus boring. My opinion at least lol
