➡️ If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a walking bass line fanatic. One of my favorite things about getting into punk and ska is how jazzy some of the bass line approaches can be. However, MxPx's song "Chick Magnet" is really on the nose in such a fun way. I discuss bassist (and lead vocalist) Mike Herrera's wide-open Sting Ray tone, how the bass line is almost more important than the vocal melody for the song's identity, how it's simplicity works so effectively, why you don't hear repetitive walking bass lines often, a music theory breakdown of the chord progressions, his vocal scatting, and much more! 🐤🧲

If you want to know the back story on this, in the very early days of MxPx the guitar player Tom would always break his strings. This bass line is something Mike made up that he would play while Tom changed his strings to kill time, he’d tell stories and stuff to the audience while playing this line. After doing that for awhile they decided to turn it into a song. Source: “It came from Bremerton VHS documentary”

Fuck yes, MxPx. Side note, MxPx did a really spectacular job adapting to the pandemic. They were early on the Livestream concerts thing with a series called Between This World and the Next. The live stream gigs were super interactive with the band taking requests via chat. I'm pretty sure some of those gigs are now just up on their KZfaq channel.

This was an instant click for me. MxPx was the first band I ever got into, and Mike Herrera was the reason i changed from playing guitar to playing bass. This is not representative of their music at the time, which was a lot more thrashy punk, but they had one of these kinds of songs on every album, something that shows their range. The Theme Fiasco is another one of those incredibly inventive bass parts that drives the song if you're looking for another listen.

I remember someone describing MxPx as prep-punk back in the day - whatever that meant. I was 14 when I heard Teenage Politics - and Moneytree is still my favourite Mxpx song. Been a fan ever since and I am glad to see the band is still making music and not changing their sound that much to conform to the current status quo. Mike is also an extremely versatile musician and he is kinda like Travis Barker in a sense, always making cameo appearances for other bands - the energy and enthusiasm is incredible - definitely one of my role models as a youngster.

It's a super fun track and Mike's a stellar bass player for sure. Also, there's an MxPx song called "Inquiring Minds Want To Know" from their "Teenage Politics" album with a pretty jazzy little section towards the end. Absolutely loved this! Someone shared the link in a FB group and I love your analysis. I’ll sub once I make this comment. You said “that’s such a raw stingray tone”. That’s because Mike has all the guts removed. It’s straight passive. Pickup direct to output jack. No volume pot, nothing. It’s all there on the outside cosmetically. But internally it goes straight to the jack.

This is one of the few songs my old Punk band covered. Because it was so simple we could figure it out/play it lol. When this is played live, EVERYONE does the scat part. It's by far one of the most crowd-participation parts of a song I've ever heard. And, with the question about who put walking bass into Rock. I don't know who the originator was, but The Ox (John Entwistle), from The Who, is probably the most well-known early bass player to do so, in the Rock genre. I actually just recently accidentally figured this part out while writing a new bass line for a song I'm working on. "Wait, this is familiar. Oh......lol."

In terms of Ska it was created in the early 1960s in Jamaican by Jazz session musicians many of which became known as the Skatalites. That's where the walking bass came from which was used in later Rock Steady and Reggae. In the 1980s 2 Tone began with bands like The Specials The Selecter and Madness and they continued on with the walking bass because many started doing covers of Jamaican Ska tunes. They had a big influence on Matt Freeman of Operation Ivy/Rancid and is a main reason why he does the walking bass as well. One of the people that shaped his playing was Horace Panter the bassist for The Specials.

And Refused, the Swedish punk hardcore band's 1998 album "The Shape of Punk to Come" is filled with jazzy influence, down to the title and album cover. Bit heavier and maybe up your alley? I don't think anyone would be upset if you explored any of these

I think you might be ready to hear The Mars Volta - Day of the Baphomets. Give it 15 seconds. It’ll melt your brain in a minute

Would be super curious to investigate who introduced this into 90s punk. As someone who played in a band of that kind of style myself back then I can say for certain that we (all) copied whatever was there - so many riffs had been taken straight off of other 90s bands not older or different genres - and then combining it with what sounded good, but definitely not with what music theory “told” us we should use. It’s so funny to see that there’s an “accidental structure” behind these 3 chord songs ;)

Hey @LowEndUniversity Mxpx and Blink 182 are who made me ask My dad a bass for Christmas and I got thises super 80's bright sparkly Peavy bass and that bass always got compliments in every middle school and high school pop punk bands until I got a Fender Jaguar bass that every bassist in the scene envied! Haha I love the videos and my friends who were punk rock bassists love these vids thanks

if you like that jazzy touch, you might enjoy the intro of "Dont fade away" by Satanic Surfers, plus the whole song has killer bass lines and fills!

I know that you already did AFI, but since your into this 90s punk era, the bassline on The Checkered Demon is what you want to hear (and me too).

Amazing Mark, wow….this was literally the very first bass riff I learned as a pimply, thought learning the bass would make me a chick magnet, 15 yr old punk. Full circle life moment right there 😂 🤘

The original version of chick magnet is amazing, but you should really check out the live version where he adds a solo into the song!

Our band had a whopping 3 songs written so we threw this one into our first performance at the teen center (sold out show no big deal). Easily my favorite memory of our short-lived high school career. Friends were going crazy in front of the stage. I bought guitar strap locks specifically because of Mike’s bass throws in live sets.

Love the videos! Got two punk/ska suggestions for future videos. Anti-Flag - “A New Kind of Army” and Less Than Jake - “All My Best Friends Are Metalheads”. Both songs have awesome bass parts that would be worthy of a reaction video

One of the first songs I learned on Bass back in 2000 at age 15. The Theme Fiasco is another great bass track.

I play this riff every time I pick up a bass. When I was a newbie this song made me feel like I knew what I was doing and was a far better player than I actually was (or still AM for that matter lol).
