During the D3 college basketball game between Grinnell College and Emmaus Bible College, Grinnell College set an NCAA record by attempting 111 three pointers in one game. Interestingly, they did not attempt a single two point shot throughout the game. They were able to make 40 of their 111 attempts and won the game 124-67 (the other four points came from free throws). Grinnell College is also known for having a player named Jack Taylor score 138 points in one game back in 2012.

This set an NCAA record btw. They ended up shooting 40 of 111 and didn’t take a single two point shot. Grinnell College also had a player score 138 points in one game 10 years ago, so it seems like they like to have fun.

My brother went to this school. He would often see signs around campus that said stuff like "You score 100 points in a game. We score 100 points in a half." They also at one point had a style they called "Goon ball". They would literally not have a player go down the floor to play defense. They'd just have him stand under his own basket the entire game. As soon as the other team scored, they'd just throw the inbounds pass to the player at the other end of the floor. After that happened a couple of times the other team would have to leave a player back in order to try and intercept the inbounds pass. Completely messing up their offensive gameplan, because they wouldn't have any plays set up with only four players. They called it "Goon ball" because at one point the player that would just stand under the basket complained to the coach. "Can I please do something else? I feel like a goon just standing out there doing nothing." It also kept teams from slowing the ball down on the offensive end, because with only four players back on defense, the open player would want to score when he was left open, so he would either have to receive the pass and just stand there dribbling or go and score. Leading to Grinnell being able to get the game back to up tempo offense it wants.

Yup. This team had a game on ESPN almost 20 years ago because of their unorthodox style of play. Their coach said he taught defense for 15 minutes and then focused on offense the rest of the year.

Just a note before people talk about how stupid this is: they know. They choose a specific game every so often to try to break a record, like Jack Taylor's 138 point bomb. They knew exactly what they were doing. (it isn't a coincidence that they never took a non-3 shot)

Grinnell didn't just shoot a lot of 3s Thursday night; the Pioneers made them. They were 40-of-111 from the field, shot 51.1% in the second half, and their total made 3s is second in NCAA history behind the 42 they made against Emmaus in 2018. Grinnell always seem to do this against a non-NCAA team. Emmaus Bible College is NCCAA. Faith Baptist (who Jack Taylor scored 138 against) is also NCCAA. They originated what is known as The System (which a few other teams use such as Greenville who won a game 200-149 in 2019). They have 5 statistical goals they try to reach: Shoot 100 shots per game, With at least half coming from 3, Force 32 turnovers, Shoot 30 times more than their opponent, and Rebound at least 33% of their missed shots on offense. That means they play a hyper press and if you can break it you'll usually get an easy layup. They'll constantly sub players out like hockey, no one usually plays more than 20 minutes (unless they're specifically trying to do something like Jack Taylor's 100 point games or Patrick Maher having 37 assists in a 2014 game)

Ok so 40 for 111 is 36% from 3. If my math is correct that's the equivalent of shooting 54% from inside the line. Not exactly a groundbreaking percentage but you'll win a lot of games with those numbers. I'm guessing the chances of an offensive rebound go up a little as well with all the long shots. I'm surprised more teams don't try this

Special shout-out to the dude who went 12-for-24. Knocked down 30% of all his team's made shots, very impressive, and HALF (50%) of his own attempts, even more impressive. Just imagine if one day, they did something crazy like this and their opponents decided to do the same thing. Could we see 100 made threes in a game? Could we see a new total score record?

What they should have done with the free throws was to throw the ball really hard at the backboard so that they could get a rebound and set up a 3-pointer!
