@ListenToTimesRadio: Thank you for your work. I am a regular listener and catches most of your shows. But there is one thing that annoys me a bit about some things being stated in this interview. Its the thing about the West promising some weapon systems and then not really following through on it. You hear this again and again in journalistic circles. And it is basically not true. The promised F16s are not behind schedule. They are NOT meant to be in Ukraine now. They cant even be there! There are no ground facilities for them, no runways have been prepped to the standard they require (they are more picky than the planes UA has now). There are no ground crew there to maintain them and lastly there are no pilots to fly them. It was the same with the tanks back in 1st Q23. It was decided in Jan 23, the tanks from PL, GER, UK where all there in March as promised after a tremendous effort: get machines ready, setup supply routes for spare parts, ammo, train mechanics and crews in just 10 weeks. But again and we heard from journalists that they were not there on time. The same with the so-called "war fatigue" among Ukraines partners. I hear it from media persons every day. But I have not heard a single European politician state that now the war has been going for too long. Or now maybe its time for negotiations - nobody. And Zelensky confirms that there has not been one case where he felt pressured into this. At least in my country - Denmark - you hear nothing of it in our daily life (well there is always a couple of Russian paid influencers) but no politicians, no unions, no people - nobody says "Hey we can just give less to Ukraine and have that new school" . There are a lot of discussions on how we need to allocate more funds to kindergartens, hospital and all sorts of welfare institutions. But not once have I heard anyone suggest we finance any of that with funds going to UA. Even in the States, the discussions around Ukraine funding is not about "fatigue" really. Its ideological or internal US politics that drives it. So where does it come from? Probably its from Russia, and then in second round you! I know I kind of let the sins of all the media fall down on you - which is not fair. I just wish you would stop making up your own narratives in the media for no good reason and at least have the facts right when you state specific things like F16s are not there on time, when it is not the truth. And also try to take a look around the surrounding society. Is everybody apart from the media expressing fatigue. Have you any statistical data to back it up? Say among the Rammstein countries? I wish I was as good with words as you guys and had the same possibility to reach a broader audience, so I could be fight these constant small blows to moral that only benefits Russia. Slava Ukraini

I’m sorry to tell you this but the Red Cross is not really the place to give. Only a very minute percentage of the donations will really go to Ukraine. Also, the Red Cross has been pretty much absent from Ukraine when they needed it most, like after the damn was destroyed and the flooding that followed. It’s best to give to United 24 or to other Ukrainian organizations directly. Research online before giving.

The West is supporting Ukraine militarily, but in a grindingly slow way where it appears that the constant fear of escalation affects their every move, killing any sense of urgency. The fear and lack of urgency is being paid with the lives of many Ukrainians whose sense of urgency and stoicism is constant. Putin will not stop until he is stopped, so let's stop him quickly with everything that's needed to stop him.

I’m from the Netherlands, the country that promised to send F16s, as I understand it there aren’t any trained pilots to fly these machines. The Ukrainian pilots who are going to fly these planes are presently not capable of flying them and are undergoing more training. Thank you for this interview, this really gives a very detailed picture of what life is like near the front. It’s so different from what I can get looking at maps about gains and losses that other blogs provide. I’m hopeful for Ukraine but realise that the price they are paying is immense.

Ukrainian pilots have been training since early 2022 in America, UK and Italy. Operation of the F16 requires proficiency in the English language before pilots can even begin training on flight simulators. Pilots just began their first flights this past week. Hopefully by spring they'll be ready.

Why do folks keep saying Ukrainians aren’t trained to fly F-16s? Do you know that for a fact? Right now, Ukrainian pilots are training in Arizona and Southern California in F-16s. In fact, Ukrainians were training in Poland back in 2022 and supposedly they were training in the UK and Spain and Romania. Plus, knowing Ukrainians, they can fix anything, so I wouldn’t doubt they could fix a F-16 and master the American English necessary to overhaul and maintain these birds on the ground. Folks swing from intense Pollyanna-ism in this war to frightful Eeyore style pessimism for no reason. Have a little faith.

5:29 to 8:00 That is the most intense, first hand experience I have ever heard about Ukraine. It is painful to hear. And I can see in her face, how painful it is for her to recount. I wonder about the logic that world leaders use for the piecemeal delivery of weapons. Training for F-16s could have started ~16 months ago. As general Hodges has long advocated, ATACM missiles could have been included along with the HIMARS, from the start. Perhaps their logic is to escalate slow enough to avoid full Russian mobilization, slow enough such that by the time Putin becomes exasperated enough to consider full mobilization, Russia will have lost too many resources for full mobilization to be at all viable. You realise that it was the warmonger Victoria Nuland who really got the Ukraine war started in 2014. This was done purely in American interests to boost the profits of the weapons industry and prevent Russia from becoming as powerful as the USA. If Putin had really wanted to attack Ukraine he would have gone in much harder with many more troops than the small numbers that first went in. What was intended was just a warning to Zelensky to stop attacking Russian speaking Ukrainian citizens in the Donbas region. Talking of leaving the elderly alone, they are not, they are sending them to the front line to fight. What is worse is that the West was so intent on keeping the war going that they sent Boris Johnson to Kiev to stop Zelensky from talking peace. It is America under Biden that people should fear, not Russia. So many Americans realise this now and are ashamed of their own country. The media are hand in glove with the corrupt American Democrats and you can not trust them at all.

It’s actually imperative that the entire western world keep up its support for the Ukrainian people and its armed forces to keep them and their country free and help push the aggressors out; any of these western countries wavering or raising unfounded accusations against Ukraine are causing unfounded problems that could and most probably help the aggressors. I used to write in at length about this and that - in fairness, I think us Brits have been pretty good. My ire last year was mostly directed at the French and the Germans. The latter SEEM to have pulled it together. The PM here deserves credit for appointing Lord Cameron as ForSec. Cameron will channel BoJo and Churchill and will be an asset (ie his disastrous blitheness over handling the Brexit referendum will not be an issue - I have not forgotten, but have forgiven). The major problem of course is the failure of the USA (and the UK to a lesser, but not to no, extent) to come fully out the closet and state clearly that the West is be behind Ukraine til they win and Russia loses. Ben Hodges WAS correct when he first gave August 2023 as a realistic time for that to have happened when he first said it in Autumn 2022. The failure for that to have actually transpired is nothing to do with the superb Ukrainians - and everything to do the coalition promising a) inadequate volumes of matériel and b) failure to deliver even those volumes in a timely manner. The ONLY effect of this will be more death, more disruption of the world economy and more of a task to reconstruct Ukraine while more decisive action and leadership COULD have struck a blow to dictatorships everywhere the world over. The only positive I can see for now as that one way or the other, the Russians have most definitely already been severely chastened - and the Chinese thoroughly warned. I suspect both of these will be feeling like distinctly "Western" victories rather than Ukrainian ones right now, however....

It's an interesting point she makes about western "fatigue" and the way Ukrainians look at it. I don't think people in the west understand that the war in Ukraine is the single most important thing going on in the world right now and has been since it started. In a hundred years' time, historians won't be writing about our "cost of living crisis" or Israel-Palestine. They'll be writing about how the west left a burgeoning democracy on its borders to the wolves and chose to sit on its hands while a totalitarian dictator dismantled the value system it had so assiduously - and at great cost - constructed because people couldn't pay attention to an issue for longer than eighteen months. Personally I think it's embarrassing. It's an insult to the countless millions that died for it that the western public finds it a little difficult to put its hand in its collective pocket and throw some loose change, in the grand scheme of things, at stamping that kind of thing out. Embarrassing.

Brilliant interview. Putin once responded in an interview, that his biggest worry for Russia was “demographics” which, with the unknown death toll of Russian fighters, may be why there are a large number of Ukrainians and their children who have disappeared into Russia. Definitely a tactic reminiscent of Stalins at the end of WW2 when orphans and displaced children in their thousands in Soviet occupied countries were disappeared into the USSR. I also note that the lucrative practice of overseas adoption of orphaned and abandoned Russian children was stopped by Putin around 10-12 years ago which may or may not be linked to demographics.

Talking about late deliveries of scheduled support is very reasonable to discuss. Starting to talk about F16s is BS from a uniformed observer who should not be so out of touch. Ukrainian Military Command under GEN Zaluzhny has an arrogant streak. He did not assign his Air Force Commander to ID potential pilots for training thinking this was a small detail. It wasted 3-4 months AFTER the NATO group of nations finally agreed to approve F16 fighters. This is a Ukrainian Military bungle as much as NATO. The delivery of MBTs, IFVs, and Artillery is a different matter. Ukrainians had already trained on this equipment. Delivery would have been completed by May 2023. It only happening now for some equipment. The artillery ammo issue is another problem which could be blamed on the NATO group instead of F16s. Ammo production and delivery should have been completed as a pipeline by September 2023. These are real issues not yet fully addressed.
@trevorstewart8
@trevorstewart8 5 ай бұрын
A lot of the delays with ammo etc was the need for the West to "tool up" again having shutdown production lines after the Iraq/Afghanistan war. The restriction on the HIMARS was just what the US had in its warehouses, but also the fear of escalation as well. A number of issues have been just plain logistics where some promised equipment wasn't in the US, but elsewhere. A large number of the Bradleys were in the Iraqi desert and were found to have been cannibalized for parts during that war and had to be shipped back to the US for reconditioning. A number of the air defence pieces from Europe were diverted from current production runs in German and French factories, so did not exist when promised. The Mk1 Leopard tanks had been sold to Spain and on-sold to Italy, then to a Dutch weapons dealer, so their specs were not clear and some were in a very poor state of readiness and needed to be reconditioned to be of any use.
@stephensipe5405

@@trevorstewart8 I agree ammo consumption by both Russia and Ukraine reflects a legacy Soviet doctrine, organization, and schemes of maneuver. On the other hand, Ukrainians could not shift to a balanced air/artillery mix along a NATO scheme without NATO quality and adequate quantity aircraft. Therefore, ammo production by NATO had to be ramped up by December 2022. This was not done. My comment was more on the pledge vs delivery gap. Poor readiness is a real NATO issue. The peace dividend did not NO readiness. If Spain had 350 Leopard 2A6 MBTs in inventory, and less than a NATO 1 Brigade Armor Team (87) was ready, this is a problem. At least 2 Brigades need to be ready and 1 additional Brigade has to be 30-60 days ready. Who inspects NATO readiness? I agree the Leopard 1A5s were all going to be a 6 months to 1 year project. It could be up to 2 years IF sighting upgrades are factored in.

In fact, most Ukrainians are grateful to all countries that help us fighting in this war. We understand that, without this help, Ukraine would have been defeated back in 2022. But it is true that this help is insufficient for Ukraine's winning the war or making a substantial progress towards the victory. We, Ukrainians, also understand that there are objective reasons for the limited military help, like the fact that Europe (and the West in general) substantially disarmed itself after the end of the cold war mistakenly believing that Russia was no longer a theat. And, we believe, there are purely political reasons.
