My wicked aunt Josephine (she became a Methodist so she could play bridge) and uncle Toby bought a new '57 two-door grass green Oldsmobile...much like yours. I loved it!

You need a body ground to the sending unit. Put a ground wire from one of the sending unit mount screws to a clean chassis ground. The fuel gauge reads impedence so the body ground is what will make the float rheostat have a correct ground to send an impedece reading to the fuel gauge. Oldsmobiles back then I think wer 0 to 33 ohms. Not sure what the Chevy sending units read.

Glad I saw this. The '57 Chevy tank will fit well under the rear bed area of my 1966 F100 that I am working on. Most guys use Mustang tanks which have the filler coming out in the bed floor of the F100. Using the '57 Chevy tank will allow me to use a side fill. Thanks!

How did you figure that out? I can understand that you measured the LxW of your frame area, but how did you know that a 57 Chevrolet tank matched those dimensions. I have a 1951 Ford F3.

I like the three piece back lite that the Olds and Buick offered . Gives the car an interesting roof line. Great job on the gas tank.

The idea of making jalopies has been around since even before that Olds came off the line. Not necessarily hot rods, but just cobbling together parts to keep cars on the road or even to improve them. Ford-GM-Mopar parts have been swapped around for as long as I can remember, and swapping GM parts within the brands to me has the facktree feel anyway LOL. Also, that clean install gets 👍👍 from me!

Ben, this is your friend with the red rust bucket from Dallas. I really like the Olds. So glad you saved it It looks good underneath and the body is not bad. 1957 was a good year. I have three 57s. I looked online and found a new 1957 gas tank for Olds for $475 from Fusick. You still saved some money.
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 11 ай бұрын
Yep the tank is $475. Then you add $100 for the sender, $200 for the fuel pump, $125 extra for oversized shipping, $100 core for the fuel pump, and with sales tax your well on your way over $1000. That is bright about what the whole car cost me

I forgot about all the other stuff. Anyway, you got it up and running for a lot less money. It's a great car. Those 57s were.

The little hose on the tank is for a vapor line. The original Oldsmobile tank used a vented cap. You could just block it off on the tank.

Nice job! I have a 58 Cadillac Sedan Deville here in Georgia in about the same condition. I need to convert the brakes to a modern brake booster and dual line master cylinder. It will only cost me about $900.00. The original treadlevac brake system sucks. My rebuild on the booster failed. It has a leather ring in it, yikes!

The noise is coming from the dual action fuel pump. the stock fuel pump is two pumps in one the gas is pumped by the bottom part and the top part you were feeling the air movement from is a vacuum pump that powers the vacuum wipers when you loose manifold vacuum on hard acceleration. Since you are using the electric pump you can just get a GM fuel pump block off plate and remove the old fuel pump, just save the old pump as it has value as a rebuildable core. P.S I installed a 12 volt vacuum pump and switch on my 57 Fiesta station wagon when I replaced the manual fuel pump for an electric pump. It works even better than the stock setup as the electric vacuum pump makes more vacuum than the stock manual pump.

That little filler neck goes to the filler fuel end to releive air pressure while fulling the car. So the fuel doesn"t backup on you.

The small nipple at the tank fuel Flange is the burb line for filling. It should be connected to the upper fuel fill pipe at the inner panel above the second rubber hose connector.

Nice "bubba" job on the gas tank! "In the Marines, you improvise, you overcome, you adapt!" ("Heartbreak Ridge" 1986). Gunney Highway (Clint Eastwood) would be proud of you. 14:50...I always kinda liked the oval speedometer pods on '57 Oldsmobubbas. Notice the "S" in the AT shifter indicator, which means "Superdrive". My dad had a '62 Olds station wagon with that. I see your car has a "cold" light, as well as a "hot" dash light, which my father's Oldsmobile also had. When it was first started, the green "cold" light would illuminate and flicker out when the motor hits operating temperature. Apparently only Oldsmobiles of the time had these features as I never saw them in any other cars, including other GM cars.

It seems I upset you when I made a comment about the Cadillac's patina. I did not mean to offend though. There is room in the hobby for both the original paint cars and the shiny refurbished ones. I love this Olds. It is one of my favorite designs from that era.

Great car deserves as much love as you can give it and the authenticity doesn't matter in my mind it just needs rescue and getting back on the road. I hope you are going to fully repaint it because I dislike the "Patina" finish many lazy owners go for!

@@AMCguyIt always depends on the car you are working with. I have cars that are nearly perfect but I own one that we never repainted and kept the original shot paint. Where neccesary we rattlecanned som spots for protection. But underneath the car is sorted mechanically and the undercarriage sealed and fixed. I agree: Patina is often used for a car in very doubtful condition.

Ok, I agree with you about being able to restore systems on old cars without spending big$. I'm 75 yrs old am an old gear head done slot of wrenching back in the day. I have only one question.... who started the idea that mechanically fixing an old car or truck but not finishing it. Who with an ounce of brain matter thinks that a rusty old car is "cool". They are ugly , paint the damn things!!!!

I am very admittedly a "purist" but there are times when you just can't do everything 100% as factory built. If you are going for a 100% restoration, then yes, spend the money, but to just restore this to being a safe, daily driver, using another GM tank doesn't hurt anything here and besides, it's hidden underneath!
