I can't explain my reaction to this video. I literally cried throughout this video. I mean the ugly cry. I really can't explain it. I did the same thing when I climbed up the pyramid in Tulum. There is something about Mexico that is connected to my soul.

It's Toxic American society that is bringing all this attention to this class of Mexicans and enforcing some weird kind of division and putting a label on them as "Black-Mexicans" when we worked so hard to eradicate such labels for the past 100 years. All that this is creating is that Mexican society will isolate them as "other" instead of just looking at them as Mexicans.

Im from Michoacan , my uncle on dad's side married Afro Mexican . My dad is Mestizo and my mom is white mexican(blonde hair green eyes). My family is very mixed, I have afro Mexican, white Mexican and Mestizo family. I think I just got lucky, Im glad you guys are showing this , thank you.❤

Many Mexican mestizos have African Ancestors/Ancestry themselves. The word-identity of "mestizo" (which originally only meant Indigenous+European ancestry) has been used from colonial times to hide African "blood" in official records and social life (a married couple saying a son/daughter is mestizo/mestiza at birth, but then some siblings are labeled as African descendants, just like some of their grand-parents; a man/woman identifies as mestizo/mestiza to be able to marry a española/español, but inquieries reveal they have African "blood")... It was one way to survive a racist society. It still is a way to erase the Afro-Mexican Ancestors in present day families. Last August 2023 there was the First commeration of the Afro-Michoacana community! With academics and activists of Afro-Mexican descent: Jorge Amos Martínez Ayala, senadora María Celeste Sanchez Sugía, diputado Sergio Peñaloza Perez... Puedes buscarlo como "Primer Foro Estatal sobre la Comunidad Afrodescendiente en Michoacán".

So they are correct Spain is in Europe. Mexico ended slavery in 1837 some years after gaining independence from Spain. What an impactful video. I am a Mexican American (as labeled), raised in the US from Mexican immigrants. All my life I have been seen or identified by American society as Mexican (which I am proud of) but only European immigrants become Americans I guess. Thank you for bridging our cultures - Mexicans and Africans are more prone to discrimination because of our shear color. I embrace my African and African American friends - and pray for a more inclusive America. Thank you for sharing - all we want is acceptance and to be respected. Love and peace...

It isnt racist to call someone black...but it is to do it in a negative way, even if you don't mean anything by it. I have a friend who told me his nickname was slave when he went to college in Queretaro and he hated it but he said it was normal. When people are a minority they don't feel empowered to say that hurts my feelings to the general public but they do say it to their family and friends. Mexico seems to have a lot of terms that are negative in regards to black people. It's a hangover from that cast system and it isn't okay. It needs to change.

I'm so glad that you took the trip to this area and made your video. I remember mentioning the Costa Chica to you guys a couple of years ago and I appreciate your efforts to show Mexico's third root! I know many Americans are surprised to find out that Mexico is so multicultural and especially the African influence. Maybe you can look into some historical Afro-Mexican figures like, Vicente Guerrero, José Maria Morelos y Pavon, and Yanga. Thanks for your wonderful videos. Thank you for such a beautifully produced video on Afromexicano’s Afromexicanas. I’m Chicano with Afromexican roots and growing up in the states I didn’t understand why the light skin Hispanics would try to put me down cause of my curly afro hair and dark skin because I always loved my look. Vicente Guerrero was mexicos first and only Afromexican who abolished slavery. Maybe you can meet Samantha Leyva, Mexico first Afromexican to win Miss Mexico a few years back and is active in the community. Love your videos! I don't know why Mexico doesn't see it as racism... but it was nice connecting with the tribe and seeing that they are living their best lives. Loved the kids too! @@TheYarbrosI think that the racism in México is kinda un the shadows and normalice, isn't as violent like in the USA, obviously racism will always be racism, but i think my first encounter with a more violent racism was in Canada, where literally an old lady yelled at me in the subway just because i tried to help her, something like that never happened to me in México, I think that's the main difference.

Curiousity made watch from Zambia, central africa. Very huge dose of knowledge i ve gained from this video. This is a huge gap in western media coverage of mexico - very deliberate to erase these people. It was emotional to listen to dance performed as tribute to their ancestors👏 rythm at 16:00 was close to sega songs in Mauritius (an island in Indian Ocean)

We traveled from the state of Colima to Santa Rosa Oaxaca back in the eighties, and that was the first time I met Afro-Mexicans. I have a four-year-old granddaughter who is Afro-Mexican-American and I love her very much.

I am Mexican who lives now in the US and I have friends from Veracruz Mexico who are Afro Mexican and we see all of us the same people but the minute you move to the US its where you get contaminated with racist hate, its a shame, we are all somehow descended from Africa routes, the history of Africa its so beautiful and people would never understand how much we have in our daily lives from Medicine, math, art, science etc I could go on and on, I am so proud to be multicultural.

This is the Mexico that the average Mexico don't want us to see. They want us to believe that Mexicans are only Indigenous or Mestizo. But Mexico once had a significant black population that most was lost in the war. Even their first president was Mulatto, what we considered Black as Barack Obama.

most afro mexicans have integrated into the mexican culture and have mixed. I can tell u that until recently i didnt know i had africanblood in me, there clues with certain features from various family members..

Yes, I hear that your story is not unique. The Afros have been integrating for centuries. Most if the people we talked to were Maya and Zpotec...parents from all over Mexico but somehow they ended up living there. Very interesting.

It's great they are embracing the part of their ancestry that is African. This is long overdue. Excluding blacks immigrating to Mexico in recent years, the majority of "Afro-Mexicans" are mostly Amerindian (50-70% depending on the region), so I hope they don't exclude or lose touch with that side as well. They should embrace ALL of who they are.

As many shared with us they learn all about the Amerindians portion and nothing about their African side in school and it's that African side that stigmatizes them in Mexico. So, we are delighted to see our brothers and sisters if the African diaspora connecting with their roots.

Great video! As a Mexican I cannot with those people that claim or suggest there's no racism in Mexico. Not only they sound naive but are a big part of the problem. Historically, AfroMexicans have been discriminated against since the colonial era. Not long ago, the Afro Mexican identify wasn't even recognized by the federal government. And there are so many expressions within our every day language, that are so normalized that most people don't realize are rooted in racism.

Mexico is extremely racist with my Afromexican people, particularly Mexican inmigracion. Just recently, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, in a region where Afromexicans are extremely rare, a white Mexican ticket agent didn't want to sell bus tickets to my Afromexican boys that I had brought up from Cuaji to get work. He claimed they were illegal aliens and NOT Mexicans, and so his racist little self wouldn't sell them tickets. Fortunately, as they were minors, I was carrying their birth certificates and their CURP to prove they were Mexican. Can you imagine an american ticket agent demanding to prove that a passenger is American before they sell them a ticket? Later on, at an inmigracion checkpoint, a female INM agent boarded the bus, and wanted to remove one of my darker skinned boys, saying that he wasn't Mexican. He then pointed to me telling the agent that I was his boss, which then she turned to me, an older, white, american-looking person. At which, she promptly left the bus without saying another word. As mentioned in the video, many of my darker Afromexican friends have told me that they too have had to sing the Mexican national anthem, to prove to the authorities that they were Mexican.

I first want to mention how grateful I am for the effort you put into bringing awareness about the Afro-Mexican population, even among Mexicans there is so little knowledge about our African ancestry. I can relate to that man's identity crisis when he began to experience microaggressions for the first time in school. I didn't even realize I was "different" until I started experiencing microaggressions & witnessing microaggressions towards my father who is of indigenous-African heritage...it was especially hurtful when it was my own maternal family (they're Spanish-indigenous). Microaggressions are just so insidious, they make you question yourself & it doesn't help that people also minimize or invalidate our experience when it happens, they say things like "it was a joke" or "you're too sensitive." One of the most hurtful microaggressions I experienced was when a close friend of mine laughed at me & called me "Aunt Jemima" after she saw me wearing a bandana (look up the 2000's fashion trend)...imagine me thinking I was being cute wearing the latest fashion trend but one of my best friends pointed out that I actually looked like Aunt Jemima 😒I also grew up dealing with flack about my "unmanageable" curly hair; this was especially hurtful because my own mother didn't even know how to detangle it, much less style my hair. For Mexicans, much of our identity revolves around the pride we have for our national identity, it's pretty confusing when we don't fit the stereotypical "mestizo" image and begin to be singled out because of it. It can hit us like a slap in the face to suddenly begin to experience the reality of where we stand in society & how people actually treat us differently. It's also tricky for us to navigate how to set boundaries around it because with other Mexicans because a major part of our culture "carilla," we make jokes & poke fun at each other. Our people need education to be more mindful about the way we "joke" about each other's differences, especially if you're part of the majority population & making jokes with a negative connotation towards someone from a marginalized community.

In case anyone is wondering, that is the jawbone of a burro. The instrument is called a quijada. From this jawbone sound, modern percussionist's use updated instruments called, the "vibra slap", & the "guiro". You can see and hear the modern.instruments demonstrated on the LP (Latin Percussion) website.
