Excellent video, thank you for taking the time and afford to make it. One thing i always do when taking an unfamiliar engine apart is to make notes from the steps i take as well. When assembling just reverse the list and there is almost no chance to forget where everything goes.

Bike Mechanic, I feel like there should be a right to repair law similar to iPhone, but for Shimano di2 and other products. Shimano should be required to sell all individual parts for their products as well as make any special tools easily available, and to set up regional repair centers to send in things like brifters and derailleurs for repair.

100% this should be the case. The right to repair laws say so. Of course this can be via trained and authorised service shops / LBS but either way it should be talked about more.

I managed to rebuild my motor with the help of this video, so thank you very much. I sourced the bearings from a local dealer. They are pretty basic bearings. Couple of points to add. The crankshaft in mine was pretty stuck so it needed some gentle punding to come off. Also the other needle bearing is behind the seal the seal needs to come off temporarily in order to change that.

HI, in my case i am not able to get off the crankshaft , how will you get it ? is there any part , like circlips o something that seems it avoid the cranckshaft release. thanks in advance
@opasq
@opasq 11 ай бұрын
@@pedroantoniozorzo2901no, there is only the one circlip on the "bottom" side which is shown in the video as well. I assume you removed that. There is some horizontal play in the crankshaft. That may be the clutch. Make sure you take that play out before pounding it. It took some harder pounds with a mallet. It definetly was the scariest part since it's hard to know how much force would brake something. I later thought that mabye some WD40 or similar might have made that easier. The part that is sticking is the bores right on the inner side of the bearing.

The circlip on the outside is very malleable and easily deformed. I am considering replacing mine with a better quality one. Thanks for your video. It took me approximately 3 and a half hours to do the whole job. Quite nerve wracking but very satisfied with the result. I have rebuilt hundreds of motorcycle engines so dealing with the tiny wires and circuit boards is a bit of an eye opener. Rejoining the wire ribbon is a trick!! You need to be careful not to put too much grease in the blind bearing holes as it creates a seal that pressurises the cavity when you try to insert the bearing and the shaft. I have been a cycle and motorcycle mechanic for 50 years so I have experienced this before on petrol engines. Cheers .

Thanks for the video, I'd wondered what the internals look like! I have an E8000 and it is feeling very "draggy", not rough or noisy, just like there is a lot of resistance. Its out of warranty so not sure what to do about it. Very clear instructions here. Thanks. Just to note you did not show putting the circling back on the shaft to complete. While tricky it actual looks easier than the Bosh performance line motor. Less bearings. Shame that the seals are not available as water ingress is a real issue with eMTB motors. With no obvious water damage i.e.corrosion, 2500 miles really is not excessive to need a full bearing change for wear. This represents less than 10 miles a day for a year. Disappointing. Can better quality replacement bearing be sourced?
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, It's probably the trickiest motor to do, there is so much going on and its all right where you can accidentally damage it. Regarding the bearing wear, failure of bearings are often due to water ingress as you say, some users use jetwash?, it only take a small amount of water to start the damage process. Thanks for your comments.

I've got an issue with an intermittent torque sensor fault accompanied by E010 on my E8000 after pedal strike on a rock, so I followed your video to take a look inside. I was hoping to see a loose ribbon cable, but nothing looked obviously wrong, apart from the fact that I was not able to separate the crank shaft from the torque sensor. It seemed to separate much easier for you and I wonder if that has anything to do with the error I'm seeing. Great video, thoroughly enjoyed the process!
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching and your comments, You may not see anything inside that may look to cause errors, this is the main problem, the motors are so sensitive. The torque sensor can be stuck on the crankshaft, the one way bearings cause it to stick on and are very difficult to remove without damage, the ribbons tear away. you are very lucky if it slides of the shaft. it's the most difficult motor to work on and I advise against it.

Hi Peter, It will be stuck on the roller bearing near the casing, From my point of view it's difficult to advise because I'm not with you to see it, it this case you would normally need to strip it down further to remove the axle. Its a super tricky job and very easy to damage, I would not recommend it.

Hi, Thanks for watching and for your great comments. The only reason anyone would dismantle the motor would be to replace the bearings because they are noisy, everything else inside the motor is not serviceable and are not available to buy as parts and when motors are out of warranty. Having said that Shimano will offer to consider a repair or replacement at a discount under their out of warranty scheme, providing that the motors have not dismantled and not been tuned.

Basically steel pipe just wider than the diameter of the shaft, but no wider than the beating inner race. Can I ask a question. There is a 2nd roller needle bearing in the outer most gear sub assembly (the one that has the biggest bearing fitted). Does that neddle bearing also just pop out or does it need to be driven out with a drift or puller?

Hello, this video is awe-inspiring! 🙇I would probably suffer a nervous breakdown if I had to do this on my motor... 😲 One quick question about motor-noise diagnostics: What is the reason for scratching, duck-like noises that occur only (and even then only sometimes) when pedalling uphill ? Could it be the bearings still?...would dysfunctional bearings make noises all the time, even when assist is off? Thanks a lot from a "mere rider"😉

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Thanks so much for replying!👍👏 one subscriber +! So that's not the case here... With motor off, or even while riding on even roads with motor on-- no unusual sounds... On uphill drive with full engagement of the motor there is a buildup of that pulsating scratch-, coarse duck-quack-like like, scraping noise, pulsating at ± double speed compared to pedaling frequency... It immediately stops when I pedal on with assist off... Still, the motor seems to be fully functional so far... I suspect it's connected to heat buildup? Or I had put too much stress on the motor wiring itself...? (by pulling a buddy on his non-E bike uphill with a rope for example...am a rather relentless rider, too😁😊) Thanks for your attention...

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Hi, thanks for the reply. I have e7000 motor and maybe its different, but to me there does not seem to be a way to push the needle bearing out since I cannot see a surface to push on - just a little bit of rubber and the rest looks like gear ring surface. But maybe I am wrong.

Hi, first of all thank for the greta video you posted, it's the only one in the internet with the whole process. My Shimano motor was making a nasty noise I was able to find in some videos and people was saying it was the bearings F..ed. I was going to buy the bearings and do it myself but as I had to buy the extractors and the press to install the new ones I finally decided to take it to one guy that makes these jobs for some local shops here in Spain. The thin gis I just got my Shimano motor serviced, the guy that made the job replaced the same bearingns you replaced but the nois is still there, I have a noise from the engine when the wheel spins backwards (while cleaning the chain) and also on climbs. the noise disapears for a fes second if I stop pedaling and start pedaling again. I thin kthe issue may come from those sprag bearings you mention. Do you know the service parts of those sprag bearings? I'm prety sure Shimano just buys them I don't think they will manufacture themselves. The noise are these: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nb5kas5_tNK-gn0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ruB6l7iWnqvHpIU.html Again thanks a lot for all the effort put in that video
