You are asking republicans on the Supreme Court to criminalize the receiving of money after the verdict of the case has been rendered. You are in essence asking them to incriminate themselves because that is precisely how they receive their payment for their decisions so that it cannot be called bribery. Never mind that it is a distinction without a difference.

I argue that Citizens United/the idea that money equals free speech is wrong. The 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees everyone the right to speech, petition, assembly, religion, & press, & the government can't discriminate based on these factors. However, the 1st Amendment (as well as most of the rest of the Amendments) say nothing directly about the right to have money. While we need money to survive in our capitalist society, the problem is that not everyone has equal access to money. Not every person in the U.S. makes the same amount of money annually, so wealth inequality will always exist. Furthermore, if money does indeed equal speech, then you having less money basically means you have less speech. It's like how the 1 C.E.O. has far more influence over a company despite their being 100s of employees who do far more, but they make less & have less (if any) say over the company's decisions. Even if everyone is allowed to donate to their politicians, those politicians are more likely to listen to the 1 person who donated far more than 100s or 1,000s of poor & middle class people who donated what little they could. Also, I don't get how it is legal for a millionaire or billionaire in 1 state to donate to a politician when they are running for a Governor or Congressional seat in a state that wealthy individual doesn't live in. Finally, corporations are not individuals, so they should not have the same rights as individuals since they are made up of many people of all backgrounds, including different economic backgrounds. So money should not be considered free speech since a small minority can afford to pay more to our politicians than the overwhelming majority who may have differing views than the wealthy & the corporations.

I think the key term in the law that SHOULD have been applied in this case is: "reward". Common understanding is a reward is something you get AFTER you have done something. "I gave you great contracts, now I need money from you." "OK, here is your reward." QED

Actually, it was a shake-down. He went to the company and asked them for cash. It is implied that if they want to get future government contracts, they need to pay up. So the company didn't want to miss out on future government contracts, so they paid up.

Here in Illinois our former House Speaker from 1983-1995 and 1997-2021 Mike Madigan may get off because of this ruling. He is accused of selling his Influence to Comed our electric company for favorable legislation in Springfield. 4 of allies were convicted earlier this year and they may get off too now.

I thought being paid under the table was illegal. When money is deposited into your bank but you can’t show you worked for it you have to explain where it came from when you do your taxes right? So I can tell hr block that extra $50,000 was a gratuity now lol. Is it time to pack the court now?

honestly this was surprising decision. this really opens the door for kickbacks. The mayor may have made the right decision but accepting money/gift from the waste management company was a kickback.

The phrase "Actus reus non Facit reum nisi Mens sit rea" is a fundamental principle in criminal law, which translates from Latin to "an act is not guilty unless the mind is guilty." This principle emphasizes that for an individual to be held criminally liable, there must be both a wrongful act (actus reus) and a guilty mind (mens rea). The principle is as old as the hills, and the legislature could make any payment from government contractor to government official per se corruption, but I guess they didn't. The idea requires proof of both the act and the mental state to establish culpability, thereby protecting individuals from unjust prosecution.

So, let's just say, I "accidentally" trafficked 200 kilos of coke across state lines, and let's just say I got arrested, and let's just say I happen to give the detective working the case a few thousand dollars just as a, "Thank you for not pressing charges, I promise it was TOTALLY accidental!" but of course after they dropped the charges because the evidence totally explains how truthful I am, that's totally legal now? Hypothetically, I mean, of course. I can't see a single way this will ever be abused. Ever.

Yall never explain how raising the minimum wage is NOT damaging to everyone’s bottom line? If I make $30 an hour and the minimum wage is $6 and then it jumps to $15 and I’m still making $30 how is that fair? Now I’m being paid only double what an unskilled teenager makes part time at the beach stand with all of my education, skills and work experience. It’s a really dumb stance by progressives and it’s part of the reason people vote against their own interests. The only things you believe in that voters disagree with are like the most crucial deal breaker points like defund the police, high minimum wage, and of course….wokeism. The kiss of death for liberals

Why are you getting paid 5x then of a hardworking person. If you are 5 times more productive than an unskilled teenager then why are you not generating 5x of the income? If you are generating 5x more income then why are you so insured about what others are getting paid? That means you are not actually productive but just want to get paid more.

@@NorthernReaper well for one that was just an example not my income, but of course it matters what other people are paid. If you worked your way up to $30 an hour over decades and multiple promotions and then that gap between you and an unskilled low income worker gets slashed in half you’re basically making LESS money now. Prices increase for everyone. If minimum wage goes up everyone’s wages would have to go up. People would demand it. It won’t work and that’s why it will never happen.

@@DexterPointner if your income hasn't increased 5x then it simply means you and your skills are simply not 5x worth in this time. Every job has its worthy as their time. People in 90s would get paid huge money only if they know how to use a computer but not anymore. Blue collar jobs were low income than any office work but not anymore. You maybe smarter and intelligent then a millworker still he will make more because of his hardwork. Simply, your job is not worth that much. If your minimum wage workers can't afford to live a minimum life that's just means you are exploiting him.

@@NorthernReaper if you or anyone else feels they are under paid for the work they do they should ask for a raise, if the employer doesn’t give it to them they should leave. Nobody is forcing you to stay. That’s not exploitation. The idea is you work in an area, get started with a career and build you skills up over time. McDonald’s and Starbucks jobs are not meant to be lifelong careers. Artificially inflating their wages is just bad for everyone because of the chain reaction with prices, wages, inflation etc.

Tell me you didn't read the case without telling me you didn't read the case. :-() The Supreme Court's decision doesn't suddenly make bribes legal. It makes it so that the law that was used to prosecute Snyder can't be used for gratuities. Briber can still be charged up to 15 years and gratuitues up to 2. Basically, they are taking redundancies out of out legal systems.

Tell me you like spreading misinformation you shoved down your own throat to stay in your echo chamber on the internet without telling me. The opinion guts federal corruption laws in half. It eliminates any cap on the amount in "gratuities" a politician is allowed to receive. There is, I repeat, I Googled it, I researched it; there is NOT a federal anti-kickbacks law for state and local officials on the books anymore. That's what this decision did. Took accountability away from thousands of politicians and insulted the nation by sending it back to freaking congress, where I'm sure we'll have a draft on a bill banning bribery by 2124. The decision itself speaks of bribery as if it's some sort of benevolent gift of gratitude for the politicians; it is a fragrant, vain, and customarily pretentiously worded mockery of anyone who cares about the integrity of our political system. You can hear the justices laughing in their kennel as they write this and wait for their billionaire to bring them food. While you can sit there and pretend we live in a fairy tale world where it's 100% formalities and the justices didn't hand down this and other decisions on corruption specifically because it benefited them personally and they've been taking "gRaTuItIEs" from people with business before the court for years, those of us in the real world know exactly why they handed it down.
