Yeah, it's nice to think Sam pretty much single handedly destroyed this channels credibility. I was a long time watcher of the channel but I un-subbed a few months after this, they got owned hard and instead of admitting it and moving on they doubled down on the regressive BS and constantly made snide comments about Sam at every opportunity. Today I came back to the video just the check the comments were still shitting on Cenk... not disappointed! :D

As a Historian, I do need to make some corrections regarding both Cenk's and Sam's remarks about the Middle Ages. Cenk in particular seems to have been greatly influenced by TV documentaries, which unfortunately depict Europe's Middle Ages as an extremely bleak, barbaric and bruel time. This is largely a modern spin, however, as Sam pointed out. Contrary to Cenk's assertion, Europe DID have libraries; many of them in fact. One of the largest and most famous medieval libraries was that of the monastery of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It still exists today and it can be visited (it's a really beautiful place). Medieval libraries were private but this was equally true for the ones found in the Arab world. Public libraries are a very recent phenomenon in world history. Europeans also founded universities as early as the 12th century. The late Middle Ages in particular were a time of great learning and innovation. To claim that all the Christians back then were fanatics is ludicrous. There was an entire class of clerics who were really pious but ALSO very interested in the natur al sciences, medicine, engineering etc.. Today we call them scholastics. Scholasticism was highly influential in the history of science and philosophy and the Renaissance likely wouldn't have been possible without it. The Middle Ages also weren't as cruel as is often believed today. For example medieval people did NOT burn anyone at the stake. There were no witch hunts. All of these events happened during Early Modern times (16th-18th c.). Even the inquisition didn't really get going until Early Modern times. This is important because something significant happened right at the end of the Middle Ages: the reformation. Contrary to popular belief, it was the Protestants, NOT the Roman Catholic Church, who harbored deeply sexist, anti-semitic and otherwise toxic beliefs. This actually makes sense when you look at what these people preached. All the famous Protestant preachers used the phrase "sola la scriptura". Today we'd call them religious fundamentalists because this is literally what they were. They believed that only the Bible mattered and that it should be interpreted to the letter. The most radical of these religious zealots called themselves Puritans and ended up moving to North America. This is another common misconception about history by the way: the Puritans weren't pushed out of Europe. In fact, most European kingdoms at the time (and the UK in particular) treated them with a great deal of tolerance. The UK under Elizabeth I. even enacted some protections for Jews, so why would they hunt down fellow protestants? In truth, the Puritans WANTED to leave because they couldn't stomach the liberal values in Europe. They moved to North America specifically so they could build their own little theocracy over there, being sure that no one would bother them in their fanaticism. Lastly a word about anti-semitism during the Middle Ages: while anti-semitism doubtlessly existed, Historians generally differentiate between structure and events. It's important to do so because if we don't, we get a very twisted view of the past. For example natural catastrophes were singular events, they weren't structure. Now, in the case of anti-semitism, pogroms did occur but they didn't occur every day or even every year. Let's not forget that we're talking about a time spain of 1,000 years here! Not every person in the Middle Ages was a raging anti-semite; in fact, the overwhelming majority probably wasn't. People in the past weren't different from us today, they had just as much empathy and love as we do. People did have far less information back then of course but nowdays we've got a lot of fake news. In my opinion, religion certainly contributed to anti-semitic pogroms but it wasn't the decisive factor. The decisive factor was the lack of law enforcement. If 200 neonazis today would try to commit a pogrom in Cologne, the city government would immediately call on their police force and perhaps the federal government would even call in some military unit. Medieval cities did not have this option, so once a pogrom got going, there was very little anyone could do to stop it. And while it is true that Jews were prohibited from taking on various jobs, which is doubtlessly anti-semitic, they often excelled in fields such as medicine or trading, where they were usually highly respected by their Christian peers. So, it's important to be very nuanced about these things.

If we’re being remotely charitable it’s pretty clear that he was just trying to say that Jihadism is worse than Nazism, not that the Nazis were literally benign. I mean let’s use our thinkers for a second here; you really think Harris thinks that the Nazis were benign despite everything he’s said in condemnation of them and of the Holocaust? Come on now brother. The very fact that he’s using Nazism as his point of comparison with Jihadism in and of itself tells you that he thinks Nazism is bad.

@@malligrubAtheists like to focus on religious violence. It existed in the Dark Age as religion fought to keep the Dark Occult out of the mainstream at a vulnerable time for the human race. Now it is dogmatic religions or dogmatic science or dogmatic anything who insist people adhere to norms which are not flexible and rather than choose a middle way for life they lay down dogmatic strictures that have to be adhered to. God gave humans free will, sometimes that free will has to be reigned in to protect cultures or societies from madmen. But for the most part if anyone is not causing harm to society they should be left alone, saving people from themselves is a thankless task and pointless. What atheists do not focus on is the harm atheism has done and the horrors it perpetuated in the current century in its opposition to human freedom, especially in relation to religion,in an effort to stamp it out. If you do not have allegiance to an in-dwelling God who is also transcendent, then who do you have allegiance to? The State or some Strongman or other or becoming a victim of the next likely horror: trans humanism: humans embedded with technology.

Cenk is like: "But the christians killed a lot more people than muslims!" Sam is talking about the doctrine, which is fundamentally different. Straight lines from doctrine to behaviour. That's the key here that Cenk doesn't seem to be able to understand, because he takes it personally. He says he isn't muslim (religiously), but he is a muslim culturally, which is why he can't resist to feel insulted by Sam's explanations.

Going by that statement, if the doctrine was so important in a religion followed by 1.6 Billion they would have wiped out the entire planet of non believers. The immature and desperate white supremacist ideology that Harris spews is rife with hypocrisy, the last 500 years o-f history of Christianity compared to Islam is not even close. He would be better to just embrace this stance of Racial superiority he thinks he and those that look like him have, than try to compare it to any other religion like he did here. If we talk barbarism it is more of christians than muslims. It is in the Quran that you get if you kill a human being is as though you are killing the whole of humanity. When Jews are persecuted in the hands of christians it is muslims who always protected them. What islam is against for instance immorality, abuse other people and kill other without a reason. It is absurd someone like Sam Harris to defend west and attack. When Muslims ruled the holy land they protected all people who live in Holy. Later when christian crusaders captured they killed almost all people in the town regardless of their religion Muslims, Jews etc. When later Salahudin Al Ayubi conquered he did not kill the people in the town regardless of their affiliation. Look today what christians are doing in support of zionists persecution of the Muslims in Palestinians. Therefore, when you compare the followers of the two Muslims are superior in terms of high moral ground compared to christians. Christian UK and USA (christians) who we can not finish the atrocities you have done to the other non christians communities in the 20th and 21 cenntury. Start colonialisation of other people, viatnam war, Middle east disaster, Afghanistan onslaught (20 years of atrocities), continued support of apartheid zionist state and so on and so forth. Well, he might not be much of a philosopher. But that wasn't the most important point in the debate was it? For example his points about slippery slop of torture is not a bad one, just because Harris manages to sound more brainy and logical doesn't mean he is right. Now it's Trump's presidency. I'm glad torture is not allowed.

One of the things both of these guys keep arguing about are Sins of the past, of the religions. I'll argue, that i's less relevant than the evolution of the religion, the development of it's moral philosophy, and consequently where it stands today. What I see is that Western religion has advanced by being exposed to the philosophers of the 18th and 19th century while Islam is still behind a couple hundred years (well at least 200). Religion in the west still plays a significant role that the philosophers failed to fill . philosophers left behind a moral void, in my opinion.

Chad K Of course, I'm obviously willing to admit I'm wrong about everything I know. The more I admit I'm wrong (if that is actually the case) the more I learn to be right. Eventually, I'll never be wrong again! (kidding) If people went into an argument with only 1 mission which is to defend their stance, then why talk at all? Or why even listen to the other person? What's the point of listening to the other person's argument if you're not willing accept the possibility that he might be right or that you could be wrong? It's quite logical tbh, it's just that people tend to forget the point of a discussion. To be clear; the point of a discussion is not to prove you're right or prove that you're not wrong...
@zinowor
@zinowor 9 жыл бұрын
Chad K Hmm, well certain things are not up for debate. It's fairly impossible to draw a line here, but intuitively we should know when and where to apply the mindset of accepting the possibility to be wrong. And I suppose there is a difference between beliefs and opinions. You can't really argue someone's beliefs, but opinions are always up for debate. I think that's an important distinction to make in this context. Whether to bomb a country or not would spark people's opinions. Whether homosexuality or racism is a sin would probably spark people's beliefs.

I think that real masculinity can not come from a woman and that real femininity can not be accurately represented by a man. Just my 2 cents.

Why do we take a person at their word when they claim to have committed crime for material reasons, but some dismiss it when they give a religious reason. They both agree on most of it .. it seems they disagree as to what weight all of the environmental, political, economic, religious, mental, and societal factors hold. Fine, they can all play a role.. but it's only religion claiming to be the one and only solution, the system that claims to trump all other factors.

Mark Hermanson Denchanter357 i think cenk clearly understand sam's premise of beliefs leading to action. and sam does make logical conclusions based on this premise, which however are wrong. not because he got the premise wrong, but because his premises are insufficient. as a counter-point to your question, if doctrine leads to behaviour, then i find it logical to ask why there hasn't been any muslim voilence in USA? here is a thought experiment, i hope you will be honest with yourself: if all the muslims in middle east suddenly by some miracle renounce islam right now, do you think the violence would stop tomorrow? the honest answer is no! i find cenk's point of view more nuanced. it seems to me that harris is so engaged in his own thoughts that he forgot that some of his writings are squarely in a political arena. and there are much better political analysts of the middle east than harris. also being irreligious or being an atheist is not equivalent to being an islamophobe.

I'm so confused. Is Cenk intentionally pretending not to understand what Sam Harris is saying or is he serious. Either way it's annoying. I don't know how Sam Harris didn't didn't get frustrated and walk out. And the way Cenk just kept putting words in his mouth and then Sam had to keep explaining why that wasn't his point of view. But for the most part it was only a few instances. I don't get how Cenk thinks that Sam should be responsible for people that misunderstand his views and then go on to misrepresent him. He's being as clear as possible, it's not his problem if people are too stupid or too lazy to understand. Also why can't Cenk just admit that the doctrine of Islam is worse. It very obviously is. It seems to me that Cenk wants Sam to provide a simplified answer to a vastly overly complicated issue. It's ridiculous. Great discussion for the most part!

I think Cenk was just saying that Sam has a way of setting up hypotheticals that are just begging to be taken out of context, or are concerning even in context because Sam sometimes writes one thing and means another. Like saying you can kill people for their beliefs when what he really means is you can kill people once they have committed violent action as a result of their beliefs and have every intention of committing more.
@Person01234
@Person01234 9 жыл бұрын
Sam is doing a lot of "I interpret christianity/islam/whatever this way and so everyone else must interpret it this way too". He's saying "you can't find justification for X in Y", then saying "if someone says they did something because of Y we should take them at their word"... well then, there clearly IS a justification for X in Y, just not in his particular interpretation of it. He seems to think he knows it all, that because he doesn't adhere to a specific belief and he can see many ways of interpreting the books, that therefore they're the ONLY ways of interpreting the books. And he keeps reiterating the same point, that Z is worse than Y because you justify X in Z but not in Y when many people, however irrationally (which is a given because religion itself is not rational), have done just that.
@StgAeY
@StgAeY 9 жыл бұрын
Person Oisels no u actually completely missed the point. Sam's clearly said each religion can be interpreted differently; and his point, which seem pretty logical, is that there are certain aspects of a religion that makes certain interpretation more likely(for example, difference between Muhammad and Jesus and their teaching), which Cenk refused to admit for some reason.
@Person01234
@Person01234 9 жыл бұрын
StgAeY Actually, Cenk pointed out that history proves it's just as easy to view christianity like that as it is Islam. Sam will then say "but jesus blah blah" but no, that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it's easier for YOU to rationalise being kind in christianity, history clearly shows that it's just as easy for the masses to accept huge amounts of violence in christianity's name as it is Islam's, if not more so.

I tried uploading this to Pornhub, but apparently rape is not allowed by their terms of service. When i was a christian my church didnt even hand out or teach from the old testament. It was new testament only. And being born and raised in Northern Ireland i can tell you, with 100% confidence that its not about religion. Its about sovereignty. There are catholics and protestants on both sides. As well as atheists and other religions. The IRA which now is mostly catholic was started by protestant farmers. Not catholics. No one ive ever known, and ive known a lot of enlisted terrorists on both sides, have ever stated anything about faith or brought it up. They only talk about sovereignty. For 37 years sounded by this shit, and im not cherry picking. And yes there are religious people on both sides, some very religious. Never once heard any of them talk about religion in the context of Northern Ireland.

We should urge them to have this interview or debate in Islamic countries, if the radicals are only a handful of them as purported by Mufti Cenk 😂 Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him." Sahih al-Bukhari 2926 Narrated Abu Huraira: The Verse: --"You (true Muslims) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind." means, the best of peoples for the people, as you bring them with chains on their necks till they embrace Islam. Sahih al-Bukhari 4557 It was narrated that ‘Amr bin ‘Abasah said: “I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which Jihad is best?’ He said: ‘(That of a man) whose blood is shed and his horse is wounded.’” Sunan Ibn Majah 2794 Grade: Sahih (Darussalam) It was narrated that Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'There are two groups of my Ummah whom Allah will free from the Fire: The group that invades India, and the group that will be with 'Isa bin Maryam, peace be upon him.'" Sunan an-Nasa'i 3175 Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)

Sam Harris comes across as calmly ...petulent, arrogant and egotistical as ever. The way he starts (calmly) is: how dare someone say something negative about him on the internet and what an asshole his host, Cenk, is. Wow. He's not gracious about the Interview at all, he's not original, and (to be honest) it's hard to stomach that this type of person has a legion of males that swamp every one of his videos with comments and congratulate themselves on how he wins every argument. You're following a rude, idiot who you've mistaken passive aggressive, pseudo intellectual verbosity for real world articulateness who is actually just petty and snide, a little racist and sexist and who no actual academic considers groundbreaking or original. But yes, he is passive aggressively calm which means he's superior, right?

someonegetsteve although your criticism of a lack of originality is warranted, misrepresenting his point as merely "how dare someone say something negative about me on the internet" is exactly the kind of thing he was defending. the principle of misrepresentation was the primary issue corrolorated by the fact that the aforementioned misrepresentation was done by journalists claiming or implying their professionality, and that Cenk was at fault for participating within that same sphere of intellectual dishonesty. I personally don't understand your claim that he is both somewhat racist and sexist, and for the most part, the conversation seemed to be an attempt at civility. if someone were interrupting me and misrepresenting my views, then yes; I would more than likely be passive aggressive.

I haven’t watched enough of Sam Harris to say I support his ideas or the conclusions he draws from his research. But I respect his perspective and find it applicable to the conversations we have these days about ourselves and our world. He speaks calmly, and slowly, which appeals to me because I know we’re more rational when calm. He constantly tethers his conversation to specific examples and stats. He speaks honestly, based on his perspective, about topics that many people don’t talk about because they simply don’t know enough about them to contribute to them. That’s not to say he’s never wrong, we’re all wrong, and that’s not to say his opinions don’t exacerbate stereotypes that can make life difficult for people, but if he isn’t speaking responsibly about difficult and controversial topics, then I haven’t seen an example of a responsible contribution to conversations on such topics. Lastly, I lived in Iraq recently for a few years. I was a high school teacher at a high school in Kurdistan. I find it hard to believe more than 10 to 15 percent of the people who lived in my city tolerated radical Islamic ideas, just don’t encounter those views and actually encountered opposite views commonly, but I also recognize I’m comparing my own subjective experience with his facts/stats. So I’ll check his sources and reconsider my understanding of that topic. I think we owe that to people like SH who present such strong arguments. And Cenk? I mean, who gives a shit?
