Soy and Shea

5 жыл бұрын

To go with our Pumice and Salt Scrub, we have a thick and luscious foot cream! Follow along with me as I show you how I make our foot cream. I have formulated this to be a thick and heavy cream but to absorb quickly into feet.
The labels I use are Polymer and I got from an Australian eBay supplier. I believe they are similar to the waterproof labels from Labels Online
Ebay seller link: bit.ly/2FpkuA9
Our recipe is below - feel free to tweak it!
Water Phase
73% Distilled Water (plus an extra 10% for evaporation)
4% Glycerin
Oil Phase
5% Emulsifying wax
2% Stearic Acid
2% Olive Squalene
7% Shea Butter
4% Cocoa Butter
Cool Down
0.5-1.5% Preservative (check your recommended uses and adjust water to suit)
1% Fragrance (check your recommended usage rates and adjust water to suit)
1% tapioca Starch

@@SoyandShea most welcome! as a side note, xanthan gum in your water phase will provide more stability and structure to your formula. It can be add to the water phase at .3-.5%, always as a slurry with the glycerin. The xanthan gum gives more longevity in terms of shelf life as well by creating a protective barrier for your lipids. I learned that from IPCS. just thought i'd share. everyone is free to do their own thing ofc but I just love sharing new info that someone may or may not be aware of. always enjoy your videos, was happy to see a notification pop up :)
@SoyandShea
@SoyandShea 5 жыл бұрын
I have tried xanthan gum in a few formulas but didn't like the texture - it felt almost sticky. I'm a bit funny when it comes to texture on skin 😆
@Izzazzo
@Izzazzo 5 жыл бұрын
@@SoyandShea I actually suspected you may have tried it but was just making sure you were aware. there are different grades of xanthan, and there are other types of gums available to choose from. Perhaps one of those would be better suited for the skin feel you are seeking. From the research I've done, almost all professional cream and lotion formulations contain one of these gums for stability as well as longevity. The function the gum provides is unique and cannot be mimicked by any other ingredient. So leaving it out is deliberately shortening the shelf life of your products, unfortunately. Which means your lipids can, and will, rancidify that much faster..on your customers. Using gum, in combination with the proper antioxidants in a preserved formula, gives your buyers the longest possible best before date. IPCS goes into detail on this chemically. I'd highly recommend seeing her demos on youtube. She teaches according to the industry standard and is thorough in making one understand the importance of each ingredient we often see in cosmetics. Best o' luck!

A quick tip but it makes such a difference in cleaning. Heat your oils and emulsifier in the largest jug. Pour the water in the oil jug (not vice versa). Cleaning out a water jug is much easier than and oil/emulsifier jug.

Squalene is a very unique oil and is something found in our skin. The closest that you could replace with is Jojoba but this is technically a wax so you would need to test whether you like the feel. Otherwise replace with a light oil like fractionated coconut oil

There are silicone wraps online that work like glad wrap or maybe finding a glass jug with a lid. Also maybe worth reassessing the way you package things too might help, like if you didn't have to squeeze them into plastic tubes you'd save a plastic zip lock bag and a plastic tube, maybe instead you could use a glass jar with a metal lit as glass and metal are much easier to recycle and fill with your products. I always choose glass or metal over plastic!
@SoyandShea
@SoyandShea 5 жыл бұрын
I am now using biodegradable piping bags for filling and I found the silicone wraps but they need to be secured tightly to stop the steam escaping. I chose to use plastic tubes due to an accident I had after someone dropped glass in the bathroom and didn't collect all the shards. Broken glass in showers is not pleasant 😥 all the tubes are recyclable 😊
@reneeh5993
@reneeh5993 5 жыл бұрын
@Soy and Shea Ah yeah that would be horrible, sadly our recycling is all in a shambles in Australia hope they fix it soon. In the mean time we are avoiding plastic altogether since our council has stopped taking it 😰
@SoyandShea
@SoyandShea 5 жыл бұрын
@@reneeh5993 yes Australia definitely needs to get up to date with recycling. Although I offer my products in PET jars and tubes, I am always trying to do things differently. I set goals this year to reduce the use of disposables in my making but without wasting water to clean. Three months in and most of the disposables have been replaced. I'm on the hunt for the biodegradable/compostable cosmetic pots here but sadly I can't find an Aussie supplier. I am also trying to create products that don't need packaging like soap, shampoo bars etc, but our summer heat is not always kind to these products. I have also reduced the plastic we use around the home though this is never seen by my customers.
@reneeh5993

Thank you! I love the idea of trying tin foil. I will have to make a small batch and see if this affects the cream and slows evaporation. I have tried in the stock pots to leave just the lid on but I loose about 40% water and this to me is a waste of a precious resource and also pushes the cost of the lotion up.

@@thedrugthatkilled I've had those bowl caps in my kitchen ages ago and found they were great until moisture got involved. If I took a bowl out the fridge and condensation formed on it, the cap never went back on 😕 Maybe they're better these days. I also got some of those silicone sheets that can be used like cling or baking paper and found the same issue. I have things to make this week so going to try the shower cap suggestions 😊

By sharing in percentages you can make this into any size batch you want and can also see the ingredients are used in recommended rates. There are plenty of calculators out there that can assist you with converting.
