Thank you for the video. I just got quoted over $3000, to re-sod my front yard! I cannot afford that at the moment and my whole lawn is not dead. I am going to do the transplant plugs to keep my HOA happy and save money. :) Very happy with the help. God bless you.

I had just done the exact same thing except with Kentucky Bluegrass up in Pennsylvania. The plugs are doing great, and the holes, well those I filled in with seed which is doing fantastic. It's a pretty good method that I'm keeping in mind for the future.

So nice to see your lawn coming in so thick! I've been following your vids for a while, and was so thrilled to see you moving to Florida. With your help, my half dead lawn is coming back to life and I am thrilled! I seeded just before the summer rains kicked in, and since I don't have irrigation I'm digging the daily rain here in Port St. Lucie. You are my inspiration! Good luck with Frankenstein grass & I look forward to more excellent videos!!

Hey Allen, wondering if I could ask a favor. Looking at your Bermuda sprigs, I'm now wondering if that's what I have, or if it's really the Centipede grass I assumed it is, due to its coarseness and green apple color. I also have some St. Augustine mixed in as well and am wondering if I nuture the augustine if I could get it to take over the centipede over time. Would you mind terribly if I could share a small quick video of what I mentioned above to your Facebook or somewhere and get a quick thought from you on it?

Do you have experience with Zoysia grass? I live in southern Tennessee and would like to have a zoysia yard. I have been testing my skills on growing my own 4x4 inch zoysia plugs. Right now I only have 1 tray(looking great). Will plant more this week. I also live on a farm, so where we just built our house is in the middle of large fields. Current situation: I have about an acre&1/2 of yard (full of clover). I do not have irrigation, but am considering installing this summer. Question: If I am going to tear up the yard installing irrigation, should I add anything to my dirt?(sand, top soil, etc.) I have tested the soil last year, but can't find that data. I will send new samples off. Thanks for your time and enjoy your videos.

Did an entire yard via sprigs. A Bermuda Hybrid supplier produced a trailer load of bagged sprigs. I took them 4 hours away. Spread them on lightly tilled yard, spread them like feeding the chickens, used a water filled roller to push them in, watered (wateredddddd - kind of like "throw it down") and waited. It took off. That was 5 years ago. Things still look nice. Good luck.

im not the expert, but what my personal experience is.. the dominant weed will get the lawn. Keep transplanting your sprigs so that the better transplants outweigh the bad ones. I may be way off base here, just wanted to share.If I see clover i kill as much of it as possible. Okay, the clover also takes over get that out as fast as possible. It make look like S for a couple of weeks while the new grass takes root. But its a sacrifice I had to make.

Hey Allan, I've been following your channel for a long time now. Love the info that you give to us other yard Nazis. I live in north Atlanta and have been in my home for about 8 years. I've seen neighbors come and go. The problem I'm faced with now is, Neighbors that just don't care about their lawns. They buy the cheapest lawn mower possible form Walmart and spray weed carcasses all over. I have beautiful Bermuda grass, but I'm having a rough year keeping all the weeds down. I've put pre-emergent down in mid February and spot sprayed some weeds before the grass starting growing and turning green. How can I get rid of those pesky wind blown weeds that find a home in my beautifully, fertilized, limed, soil-conditioned, reel mower cut lawn?
@zztop1171
@zztop1171 8 жыл бұрын
Two questions for you. I used the Bayer weed killer to spot spray some weeds on Thursday and I'm not seeing any yellowing or wilting of the weed. How long does that product take to work? I am only familiar with Ortho products and Roundup. Second question. Planning on overseeding the yard in the fall. Is topdressing absolutely necessary in your opinion? My plan was to possibly aerate or dethatch, spread the grass seed, and then rent a lawn roller and roll the seed. Trying to save up enough cash to possibly get some compost to spread over in the really thin areas, but that would be about it since I have about 9500 sq ft to cover, and my main focus has been sourcing really good grass seed. I wish I could afford to throw more money at the project, but I don't. Thoughts? I appreciate any feedback.

I actually just did this. It's a very labor intensive job, but it's a nice way to restart a lawn. We recently reseeded the area and it's turning out very nice. Get some help of available just to cut up and haul out the sod. Use a trailer or flatbed if you have one. Also, might want to find someone who wants the sod to compost. We gave ours to a guy who used the pieces to redirect water for irrigating his fields.

@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 8 жыл бұрын
Probably not. You need a grass type that spreads via rhizomes and/or stolon. Bermuda, St Augustine, even Bluegrass will spread this way, but not fescue. Fescue (more of a bunching type grass), while it thickens from a single point, won't actually "creep" to fill in bare spots.

You mentioned that you felt the bermuda was overfertilized but how does a huge rainfall like our tropical storm effect the fertilizer you put down (milorganite and ringer)? Especially if it was just recently thrown down. I threw down miorganite over the memorial day weekend and my lawn looks great. However I wonder just how much milorganite wend down to the drains with 5 inches of rain.
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 8 жыл бұрын
it will mow likely wash it away actually. It's the reason why in this county we have a fertilizer ban from June - September as the hard rains will wash it away and into the waterways. In my case, the fert was down in plenty of time and broken down so it will hang in the soil no prob.
@vytasatvmanstudios
@vytasatvmanstudios 8 жыл бұрын
Concerned about that ban for Hillsborough County, I looked it up. We have a little different restriction as follows: #5: When is fertilizer application prohibited? You may not apply nitrogen or phosphorous fertilizer during the following events: i) if it is raining at the application site, or ii) within the time period during which a flood watch or warning, or a tropical storm watch or warning, or a hurricane watch or warning is in effect for any portion of Hillsborough County issued by the National Weather Service, or iii) within 36 hours prior to a rain event greater than or equal to 2 inches in a 24 hour period is likely. It appears I just got by without breaking the restrictions as recall there was not rain 36 hours after my application and there were not watches or warnings for 5 days after.
@Thelawncarenut

Hey Allyn, I've watched your videos numerous times and its made me a lawn care nut. I live in NC and I'm a little behind on spring recovery. I have all kinds of weeds and barespots in my fescue lawn. with the temps reaching 85 - 95 during the day, is there anything I can do for the summer months - just before - or am i doomed until fall?

if you can irrigate them go ahead and apply milorganite - that will help start up the thickening process now. and mow tall too!

I'm a recent subscriber. Appreciate the content and your delivery of it. Makes me believe that I can be a lawn care nut too. I live in Amarillo, TX and the two dominant choices for grass is either Fescue or Bermuda. I noticed that you had problems with Bermuda in shaded areas of your yard. My yard is currently a haven for weeds. I think I have every type of weed (at least the legal kind) in my yard. I'm wanting to rehab the yard...one bite at a time of course. Is Fescue better suited in areas of shade as well as complete exposure to the sun? I have both well shaded areas in my yard and areas of total sun exposure. Wondering which to plant...Bermuda or Fescue? Also, do you have any videos addressing lawns and pets...effects of urine and poop on lawns? Thanks for the content!! It's got me hooked!!

If I was you, I would go with Zoysia. It's a perfect turf for your area and some varieties can do ok in shade too - much better than Bermuda ever would. I need to put out some content on dog urine soon!

on Peat Moss: I read (on the internet, must be true!)that it's acidic and can potentially damage a lawn, but I see you use it often. Got any vids or advice on Peat Moss? thanks!

It's actually fairly clean and neutral but too much of anything is a bad thing. its a good soil conditioner for clay but in my case, it's used like a mulch to retain moisture.

i like to mix soil 1:1 with peat moss to neutralize the acid. We use Peat moss in parts of Scandinavia.imho

If you want bermuda to spread and cover, mow it low. When it is kept at cool season grass heights, it grows upright rather than laterally. To do this, you will need a reel mower. Rotary cut bermuda is thin, you can part it with your hands like parting hair. Reel cut bermuda at less than an inch cannot be parted. From a lawn care professional who deals with a lot of this kind of grass. My normal height of cut on bermuda is 3/4" or lower.
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 8 жыл бұрын
agreed 100% but at this time, a reel mower isn't in the cards - gotta work with what I have until I get it thick enough to warrant the investment. I hate how leggy it is and that's why I just need to mow more often with my current setup.
@rey3472

Thick enough to warrant the investment? If I want the grass to grow a certain way, mowing is 80% of the equation. I start mowing a grow in at 1/2" when it reaches 50% coverage. By the time it is 75%, I have it at maintenance height. Bermuda is one of those grasses I never worry about that 1/3 thing on. Sometimes, by the time I mow again, grass has doubled in height from 5/16" to 1/2". No scalping or ripping, because the mowing is done with a good mower. Do you understand what rotary mowing does when it is done at low heights? It pulls out stolons. Does not happen so much when the mower is set high to mow St Augustine. Will happen when a rotary is set near 1". You are where I see a lot of walkbehind greens mowers being sold after being retired from golf courses. I am in the business of maintaining warm season turf at fairway height(1/2"), all the way down to tee height(1/4"). The lawns I service look more like golf grass. Good mowing is a snap with a Toro GM1000 retired from a golf course.

great vid, REALLY helping me with my Bermuda grass lawn. a question, what are you using on the crab grass? I have tons of grab and goose grass.also, get a really cheap window unit. like $100 one, stick that bad boy in your bedroom window when storms come. your generator "should" be able to power it, this way you can get good sleep.

Seems to be some concerns on pete moss. It is acidic, but you would have to use half a dozen bales per thousand squares to lower the pH of the soil profile. It's a great little amendment and helper even here in the Northeast. When I use it in a large quantity in my veg garden, I just add some lime.
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 8 жыл бұрын
yeah I've never had a concern with it. I don't know who is getting everyone all up in a roar over it but I'd much rather risk a slight and temporary pH issue than bring in some other top dressing that contains weed seeds. Plus, the peat doesn't mix with my sandy soil here, it's too light and just literally bubbles up and away in rain.

Hey bro! Up here in Upstate SC, I core aerate my warm season lawns as part of my services. Now I don't do all of them, however the lawns that are new to me or have not been cored in 2-3 years, I suggest it. I really think you'd blow up both your St. Augi & Bermuda grass lawns if you cored them. The cores will have pieces of root and will grow so fast. I strongly recommend that you wash the core shafts between grass types so you don't transfer Bermuda onto the St. Augi. Send me a message or call me to discuss what you think. I love the work your doing, bro! ~Kenny Xtreme Green LawnSolutions

I would love to do that but with the sandy soil here, there are no cores to be pulled. If I was in GA or further north like you, I def would do it.
@kennyjohn3774
@kennyjohn3774 8 жыл бұрын
Is it too sandy that the cores wouldn't bind? I thought maybe there was enough clay to pull a core down there. If not, then verti-cutting could give you more density. Have you used Celsius as a broadleaf weed control? Absolutely the best for warm-season lawns. Kills most anything.

That generator was next to an Alpha Power supply. That was likely from the cable and internet company to provide temporary power to the cable plant and not for the power company. Just FYI. Love your videos
@CJB90
@CJB90 3 жыл бұрын
That generator was not from the city or the power company. It is from the cable company to keep their power supply up that services the area. That way people in the area who have power to their house can use their cable, internet, and land line phone. It powers nodes and amplifiers.

I've heard people make claims against using peat moss. They say that the peat moss sucks all the moisture out of the soil and keeps it out of your seed/roots. What is your counter-argument to this? I just used some peat moss to cover some centipede seeds and it would give me some good peace of mind to hear your reasoning over using peat moss vs straw or some other mulch. Thanks.

watch any of my vids prior to Sept 2015. That lawn in NW Indiana was started with seed and peat moss on bare construction soil in 2004 and never looked back. What I know is that there is an upside and a downside to EVERYTHING you do in the lawn and opinions are like a**holes - everyone has one. The best thing to do is go out and do it yourself and learn what works for you.

Who knew! -that pete would be so controversial! Ha ha. The only caution I would give is to be careful not to smother grass seed with it. Use a thin layer - technically it's recommended to use a screener for this purpose where you only use the finer fibers. Otherwise it's fine to cover such vigorous runners as Bermuda grass. In my day (Ok, I guess this means I'm old), pete moss was widely used as a potting medium.

I hunt down and kill bermuda grass in the midwest if it creeps over from my neighbor's yard into my tall fescue lawn. I suppose due to climate some have no other options but bermuda.
