To RPS and White Sea, DUDES....I demo'd and am buying for sure! The new features made this plugin a must-have for me. It's already all over my latest mix. The new features allowed me to be extremely subtle yet impactful with the settings. It's not a special effect for me- it's now part of my core saturation chain. Congrats on making this plugin GREAT and thank you for making my mixes better going forward!

Automatic gain for distortion plugins *is* a difficult problem with no perfect solution. I can think of three ways to solve it, each with their own drawbacks. 1) For the amount of gain you apply to the input, simply apply an inverse amount of gain to the output. This works well enough in some cases, but in saturation applications or anything that results in lots of nonlinearities, the more gain you apply the more incorrect the result is going to be because you're essentially increasing the RMS of the signal, and the difference between the incoming and outgoing RMS can only be so large, e.g. the RMS difference between an input sine wave and a resulting distorted square wave is only about 3dB at most no matter how much gain you apply. For that reason this method usually tends to over estimate if you apply more than a few decibels. This brings us to method no. 2… 2) Simply measure the RMS of the incoming and outgoing signals, and apply that difference as gain compensation. In a way this is a perfect solution, and it's essentially what compressors and other dynamic processors use, works really well there. But if you want to use this method then you're essentially implementing a compressor in addition to the rest of the plugin. It also means that the output gain is constantly reacting to the input which can cause an undesirable "pumping" effect as well as sideband distortion due to the constantly changing modulation. While being perfect in theory, it's not really workable in practice in this context, and thus as a third option I suggest… 3) Simply make a static estimate how much RMS gain your saturation method is going to apply for most kinds of input signals, and apply the inverse of that. It's basically a somewhat less naive version of option no. 1 as it takes into account the actual loudness added to the signal better without the assumption that every dB of input gain translates to equal amount of output gain. Drawback is that it's still never going to be perfect and requires a lot of careful tuning and testing with various kinds of signals, but in my opinion this provides the best estimate without resorting to option no. 2. Personally in my saturation plugin I apply gain compensation in two parts using a combination of methods 1 and 3 for the input gain and the saturation "drive" factor respectively, with the option to turn both on or off. Despite being a difficult problem it's an extremely important feature in these sorts of plugins nevertheless, so there's not really an excuse to ignore it, just find some way to implement it and at least offer it as an option (preferably on by default). But I just hope that users also realize that it's always going to be a rough estimate, so expect it to fail under certain circumstances. :) (ps. if you know any other ways please let me know.…:))

Do you have a link for the plugin you're talking about? Seems interesting
@JimijaymesProductions2 жыл бұрын
That is very true but Im of the opinion any effort is better than none. The problem with none is a gain change of 20db is annoying. A change of 2db is manageable, for simple saturation or compressor plugins I am happy with the first method as that is what i'd do in the real world, for complex plugins more complex auto gain is needed.

In case it helps someone else understand aliasing/foldback distortion: my understanding is that the reason why foldback distortion isn't "harmonic" or as some people say, not "musical", is that the distortion frequencies aren't mathematically related to the original signal (which would be harmonic distortion, the kind that you want out of a plugin like this), but instead are mathematically related only to the Nyquist frequency, which is a constant (determined by the sample rate you're working at) and has no relation to the actual signal you're working with. EDIT/correction: no *direct* relation to the original signal, only indirect (relationship between signal frequency and Nyquist frequency)
@ManuelMarty2 жыл бұрын
so if we are able to change the sample rate of our daw and the plugins to the key of the current song then the aliasing would be musical 🙂🙃🙂

Thickify, if you're listening. Chris from Airwindows makes his plug-in's open source and he has code for a good ultra-sonic filter to control aliasing beyond what oversampling does by itself. -100db is supposed to be inaudible and sine wave sweeps up to 20khz are a good stress test

Not sure they used an anti-aliaaing filter after Oversampling..... Or an ultra-sonic filter. Should have been able to catch more of that foldack distortion on the way back through Nyquist to prevent it from aliasing. How that works and how much oversampling is still a little bit complex for me though.

I tried a few (d16, audio damage) and all the plugins does not give me the sound or are to complex 🥸 annoying isn’t it?
