I often wonder if Eric could have stuck it out longer & got his head right would 3 piece Lizzy have been even more succesful than classic dual guitar Lizzy...for me, Thin Lizzy was good debut, Shades built on that promise & Vagabonds was superb... Can only imagine how great the fourth album could have been.. The Classic Lynott/Downey/Robertson/Gorham sound is my favourite i must admit but a lot of the Bell stuff is right up there at the top with it... thanks for uplaoading.. really enjoyed that!

Steffan Pila A Great Live Version of "Slow Blues." The song is super but the best part is Eric Bell's amazing guitar solo at the end of this song. Long Live Thin Lizzy and the guitar madman Eric Bell.

Revisiting this, watching Phil get fired up as Eric finishing up that closing solo. Pretty cool. That excited cat waiting to pounce thing, I don't think I ever saw another guitarist evoke that out of Phil.

I turned on to Lizzy from the Jailbreak album. So from my perspective THAT was the first Thin Lizzy that I knew. For me Thin Lizzy will always be about Phil. Brian Downey always there. But I accept each lineup as a different incarnation. And because I think PHIL WAS LIZZY I accept the different styles that the band had. I'm an Eric Bell fan. And you can call it the more commercial lineup. But I liked Lizzy best with Gorham and Robertson. Because, like I said, THEY were the Lizzy that I first turned on to.

@ westafoolaway urbantheking I think that they are by a company called HH. They came out in the 70's and I used to have one. They were transistor amps which had a built-in fuzz.sustain circuit that was pretty unique. Eric does not have that switched in this clip - as I discovered myself, although it was a really great sound in itself, it totally swamped out anything else you tried to use at the same time like wah, phaser, etc, although the amp did have a send/return loop. I'm sure that Eric is just using it as I did, leave the channel on normal and overdrive it yourself if and when required. Those HH amp control panels were back-lit in a flourescent green. They caused a bit of a sensation when they came out, but soon disappeared and I have never seen one since the Seventies. btw....... Eric Bell is/was a fookin awesome guitarist :-) pic of an HH "Valve-Sound" head here i2.wp.com/amploft.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/IMP_0982.jpeg?ssl=1

HH IC100. I think he used the Sustain-channel, and maybe even pushed it further using a Colorsound-pedal.

Great point about Eric Bell era Thin Lizzy. Vagabonds was so strong and they were on the right path - having it fly apart was a tragedy. I wish Eric had a taken a break, gotten his head right, then come back. Alas, it was not to be. Lynott/Bell/Downey is Thin Lizzy to me. I never accepted or connected to with the later commercialized version of the band. It was almost soulless after Eric left, becoming watered down for maximum success.

Well… if wishes were horses, beggars would ride… I agree that Mr. Bell was essential, but it was Mr. Lynott's band in the end. Both should have taken a year out, but to get money, recording and touring was essential. The music industry has changed radically, but, back in the day, they had to be strong to take the pace. Twelve albums in twelve years was brutal, and also the reason Thin Lizzy is such a great band.

Revisiting this after a year. This still blows me away. It makes the twin guitar line up look like amateurs. Yes, I said it, the PL/BD/SG/BR line up pales in comparison to PL/BD/EB. With the twin guitars, the band lost the organic feel plus, Phil took the band towards the mullet "tough" crowd lyrically. His style, sensitivities and interaction with Eric was special. They lost something special when Eric left.Gorham or Robertson don't have the evocative ability Bell has. Phil's writing shined with that evocative ability.

I totally agree with you that this was the best lineup of the band imho. I saw them play around '73 and they were just awesome. I've met Eric Bell a few times, a really nice guy :-) The twin guitar lineup just never gave me that thrill of the three-piece. I them with Gary Moore on guitar as well - brilliant!
