Being the 2nd largest city in Norway, we just had to do 2-day layover in Bergen - a big city which has a a small-town charm and atmosphere.
Founded more than 9 centuries ago, Bergen possesses strong roots of the Viking heritage and it was once the main trading centre between Norway and the rest of the European nations.
Unfortunately, our road trip schedule was pretty tight and we only had a full day to spend in Bergen before we set off to Nigardsbreen.
Hence, we've only managed to take a quick tour around the city - visiting the Bergen fish market, trying out some local food, and checking our the Galleriet (Bergen's most spectacular shopping centre).
And true enough, the cost of living in Bergen is really expensive. It wasn't really a shock to us because it was more or less expected when we did our research.
But what we didn't know is that you even need to pay to use public toilets/bathrooms. That really caught us by surprise.

As a native of Bergen my advice would definitely be to avoid the fish market, as it's very touristic. It's true that it has a long history, but as tourism, especially from cruise ships, accelerated, the fishmongers pivoted very hard towards the tourists. As a result, the locals have felt alienated and basically stopped going there. But good choice in visiting Søstrene Hagelin for fish soup in a cup! There are so many interesting places in Bergen, sometimes just a couple of streets away from the fish market, plus of course many good museums.

Thanks for the compliment! There’s actually more to see in the city, just that we didn’t have time to cover all of them in Bergen ☺️

My boys were born I Bergen! We left Bergen to Bodø, when the boys were seven month old. We live now in Oslo for the last past 11 years. Bergen is absolutely stunning!

That was wierd. I've never seen a shopping mall that charges for toilet visits - It was poor service. There is certainly free toilet in the dining area in the center.

The only "free" toilets we used were in the cafes and McDonald's. But of course, we were patrons and bought something in those places (didn't want to be seen as cheapskate tourists 😂)

Not a very interesting video about Bergen. The video on Ålesund was more interesting.

Yes, honestly there isn’t really much about Bergen except it’s very touristy (though it wasn’t really the season). We liked Ålesund better :)
