Don't walk alone, always wear a hat, where the REAL "Middle of the World" actually is and a dozen more tips about how to travel and live in Ecuador from LOCALS I interviewed!
I've only lived in Ecuador for a month now and there's so many things I wish I knew before I came and there probably is much more to know SO I spent my entire week interviewing locals that I meet in my daily life to learn more. Tune in!

It's AMAZING how many say don't walk alone. I'm guessing this was filmed in Quito. I walk alone most of the time in Cuenca and have been for three years with no problems. I do not however walk around by myself later than 9:00 at night.

Until you’re robbed, at 11:30 am, at a public park, full of people, in one of the best neighborhoods, by two punks on a motorcycle who saw your wife looking at her phone. The lion always goes for the most vulnerable gazelle.

Funny how many people talked about not walking alone, especially at night or in less-safe areas. We keep hearing this here too, from many people we meet here. And yes, the weather is so unpredictable! We've seen storm forecasts and it's been sunny all day and vice versa.

@@BPe-ie9je I think it’s more about being aware than concerned. I like to join Facebook groups for the area I’m going to get a feel for what those living there are saying about what’s safe and what’s not. Then I can make better choices about how I move around the city. I hope you have a great trip!! Ecuador is a beautiful country!

I lived in Ecuador for 28 months. It is dangerous in Quito and other big cities. I lived in Cotacachi because it is the safest city in the country. However, it is a very small town and very boring. Most importantly, be careful of the “silent killer,” the altitude. I lost five friends who died of heart attacks because of the high altitude. Even myself, I must take heart medicine everyday! That was six years ago. 🦋

That's great advice and context on altitude - always knew it was an issue but never experienced it that seriously. Is different for everyone so all should be prepared for sure

@@Eddie_He Yes sir. I lost some great friends as we all knew each other very well since the expats do stick together. We have Thanksgiving and watch the Super Bowl together. Very sad, but true. If you are over 60 and overweight and/or once had a desk job, don’t retire in Ecuador. Take care. 🙏🏼

I've been here a year and haven't found them to be all that friendly. Most of the time, they are down right rude. If you're a visitor and visiting toursist places perhaps they are friendly. But if you live here, most of them are not. Don't get me wrong, there are some really nice people. You have to get out and create relationships. But what I mean by being unfriendly is unlike the videos you see, they don't greet you. They will walk through you if they can on the sidewalk. They wills steal your taxi, that you just hailed. They will cut in front of you in line. And, you don't have to be robbed at gun point to be robbed, they will rob you by charging you more for food, for example, and then give you food that's spoiled, or old meat. Personally, I have better luck with the Venezuelans then I do with the Ecuadorians. And, if you're thinking about moving here and shipping things, be extremely careful. The people who call themselves "shippers" are not really shippers. They will steal you blind and extort more money from you, holding your shipment hostage. If they don't then customs will. The visa attorneys are not much better. With the shippers make sure they have some kind of bonding or insurance, demand to see it. In most cases they don't. They walk a grey area, because your contract with them is in English, which wouldn't hold up in the U.S. but because the contract is in English and not Spanish and not bonded, then it's also not a contract in Ecuador. You learn these things by experience, not by being a tourist.

Everybody in the video seem to be drunk. Here would be an accurate answer if you'd ask me: 1. Talk about politics. Societies nowadays everywhere in the world are so divided due to the algorythms. What people see in social media is what they want to see, so people have got no objectivity so they think their reality is the only valid point of view disqualifying other social group's worldview. So, unless you have lived in Ecuador for a while, unless you know a LOT of both ecuadorian and latinamerican history, and you've got a pinch of objectivity, you can talk about politics with certain individuals. 2. Complaining about ecuadorian traditions from your own worldview. Ecuador has throughout certain epoques tried to disconnect from colonialism and tried to create our own national identity, and it is highly offensive for some, that white foreigners come and complain about our ways of doing stuff. Like amazon tribes who wear almost no clothes and have been disconnected from the world, or the traditional Cotopaxi fest 'Mama Negra', which is a man that does the 'blackface' and NOT intended to offend anyone. Also, our food, like tripes or worms eaten in the Amazon. We're proud and love our local food. 3. Complaining about the lack of services or stuff sold here compared to what they find in highly developped economies. If it makes them feel superior to tell us that, well, good for them. We know. But we will feel awkward and sort of offended. Import your stuff, there's a lot of cheap ways of doing it. If you do not like our infrastructure, please, do not complain. That's it, if you ask me. Besides that, do everything else. A foreigner no matter where they're from, they're very welcome here. What I have listed is stuff annoying even from ecuadorians. People in the video are so alarmist talking about crime. Crime is not only against foreigners, but to us ecuadorians too. So, that wouldn't respond the question certainly. 5:07 This girl is so xenophobic trying to blame venezuelans for the crime. She should know there's ecuadorian migrants being blamed for stuff outside of Ecuador too. 5:42 This girl's answer was the best, loved her!

I don't understand why some of us get offended when we talk about services, it is a reality. Opening our eyes tl different thing will make us realoze what we have to change to become an even better society. And blaming Venezuelans for the high rate crime but we cannot deny some of them are involved in thay sadly. I have been robbed by people who are clearly from overseas and I live jn a very quiet safe place where this never happened, so we can clearly see why people have that judgement aginst foreigners.

So I'm curious how patient Ecuadorians will be with me while I'm trying to learn Spanish. I can understand more than I can speak because I have a fairly difficult speech impediment, like rolling my R's is incredibly hard for me. I don't want people to think that I want them to speak English, just I'm struggling a bit due to something I can't control.
@Eddie_He
@Eddie_He Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's actually a problem I run into because lots of people in Cumbaya speak English so the second I start struggling with saying something they'll revert to English in an effort to make the conversation easier and then I'll naturally speak English too so hard to practice sometimes. It does making building relationships easier since there is no communication barrier. But also depends on the area but you may have to be intentional about your practice and it is a matter of when rather than if because so many people speak spanish youll be exposed no matter what.
