Here are some things I find quirky in Amsterdam. Some of these things were immediately apparent when I first moved here, whilst others took a little longer to notice. My most recent cities of comparison are Kuala Lumpur and London.
I should also mention that some of the things covered in this video may also apply to the rest of the Netherlands - but as I've only had experience living in Amsterdam, I respectfully did not want to make assumptions for the rest of the country too. If there are other things that you find quirky in Amsterdam (let's keep things on the light and positive side too), please do share them in the comments below. Thank you so much for watching.

ABOUT ME
Hello there! My name is Daniella Perera and I’m an artist and vlogger based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I grew up in Hong Kong and the UK, and I’m of mixed heritage including Chinese, Sri-Lankan, Dutch and Portuguese.
Near the end of 2020, I moved from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam with my husband. I have since fallen in love with this city, and I make KZfaq videos (every other weekend) about things to do in Amsterdam and tips to settle in faster. The idea behind 'Pocket Lighthouse' was to shine a light on the above topics, and for this information to be accessible on the go.
One of my long-term goals is to use my creativity (whether that be through art or video) to regularly support organisations helping strays and shelter dogs. Needless to say I absolutely adore dogs.

I like the quirky museum street of the end of the Gedempte Begijnensloot to the Sint Luciensteeg. It is just a real street with a glass roof and glass entrances on both sides. I use it a lot for short cuts while walking. The street has the most beautiful 17th Century paintings on the walls. And the ‘gevelstenen’ a sort of ceramic mural bricks at the entrance of the Sint Luciensteeg are magnificent.

Haha ^^ For the narrow stairs: place your feet almost sideways on the steps. You won't fall off again (when sober...). 🙂

Placing your feet sideways is the only way to do them, unless you have extremely strong calf muscles! hehe

Wow this one was fun! Amsterdam has so many quirks, you should see some Jan Sanders drawings of the place as well. I think that people from Amsterdam are also quirky quite often. My mother was born there, so I've been in Amsterdam many many times throughout my life, and not being from there I always found it quite a noticeable difference.

Hi Vincenzo! Really glad you found this video fun. I shall check out Jan Sanders too! I found your comment about people from Amsterdam being quirky quite often very interesting too!

The toilets are small for the same reason that the staircases are steep: lack of space...
